Nebraska's football coaching staff will undergo further remodeling.

It was announced on Friday afternoon that the Huskers and offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Troy Walters have "mutually agreed" to part ways.

“Troy has been a valued member of our coaching staff for the past four years,” Husker head coach Scott Frost said in a press release. “Troy is a good mentor for his players, provides great energy on and off the field, and carries himself with a presence off the field that will be missed. I want to thank him for his work on our coaching staff, and wish him and his family all the best going forward.”

Walters has been on the Nebraska coaching staff for the past two seasons, and has served on Frost’s coaching staffs for the past four years overall. Walters was a finalist for the 2017 Broyles Award, given annually to the nation’s top assistant coach.

Walters was Nebraska's highest paid assistant, making $800,000 per year, with his current contract scheduled to run through this season.

The Huskers already have made one staff change this offseason, with Mike Dawson officially named in charge of the outside linebackers on Thursday after recent news that Jovan Dewitt had taken a similar post at North Carolina.

A pair of Nebraska seniors are no longer with the program heading into winter conditioning.

Senior linebacker Pernell Jefferson and senior offensive lineman John Raridon are no longer with the Nebraska football program, a Nebraska spokesman confirmed to Husker247 on Friday afternoon. Both players were left off the Husker roster following its most recent update.

Jefferson was named Nebraska’s Scout Team MVP in 2016, but never appeared in a game as a Husker.

Jefferson graduated in December.

Raridon, a former four-star recruit out of Des Moines, Iowa, appeared in six games in his career as a reserve offensive lineman.

Walk-on offensive lineman Collin Shefke is no longer listed on the roster, nor is senior walk-on wide receiver Todd Honas or walk-on offensive lineman Mitchell Balenger, whose name has been in the NCAA's transfer portal for several weeks. 

With the five players removed from the roster, the online version shows 160 players.

That includes 86 scholarship players, one more than the 85-man maximum. NU must hit that mark by the end of the offseason and can still add up to two more players for its 2020 recruiting class.

The Nebraska football program announced today that Matt Lubick has been hired as Nebraska's offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach, pending the completion of a University background check.

Lubick brings more than two decades of coaching experience to Scott Frost's staff, including 16 seasons at Power Five Conference schools. Lubick most recently served as Washington's co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach in 2017 and 2018, and spent four years on the Oregon coaching staff from 2013 to 2016 where he served on the Ducks' staff with Frost.

"Matt Lubick is a great addition to our coaching staff," Frost said. "I have always wanted to work with Matt again since our days at Oregon together.  He is the only person I considered for this position.


The son of long-time Colorado State head coach Sonny Lubick, Matt Lubick began his college coaching career for his father in 1995. He has been part of teams that won six conference titles and played in 14 bowl games, including the 2014 College Football Playoff championship game at Oregon.


In his two seasons at Washington, Lubick helped the Huskies to 20 victories, the 2018 Pac-12 Championship and appearances in the Fiesta Bowl and Rose Bowl. The Husky offense completed better than 66 percent of its passes in each of Lubick's two seasons on the Washington staff.

Lubick spent four seasons at Oregon from 2013 to 2016, working with Frost on the Duck staff for the first three of those seasons. Oregon ranked in the top five nationally in both scoring and total offense from 2013 to 2015.  Lubick took over as Oregon's offensive coordinator after Frost left to become head coach at UCF.

While serving as Duke's wide receivers coach from 2010 to 2012, he was named the 2012 Football Scoop Wide Receivers Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year. An NAIA All-American defensive back, Lubick coached the secondary at Arizona State from 2007 to 2009, helping the Sun Devils to the 2007 Pac-10 Conference co-championship.

Lubick's coaching career also included stints at Ole Miss (2005-06), Colorado State (1995, 2001-04), Oregon State (1999-2000), San Jose State (1997-98) and Cal State Northridge (1996). Lubick was part of two conference title teams at Colorado State and assisted Oregon State to the 2000 Pac-10 co-championship and a trip to the Fiesta Bowl.

Could I cut in with an important (to me) question - needing Husker fans expertise?

Would you classify the 2012 Huskers as an option team?  Pelini as HC, Taylor Martinez at QB gaining 1000 yds, along with Abdullah as well.  Kenny Bell leading WR.

What I need to know is were they a running team that ran the option sometimes or were they an option team?  When you picture that offense, was the play they ran most often an option run?

Im leaning towards NO.  TM often ran the QB draw and scrambled a lot, a la Vince Young.

Concur.   They may have run a handful of speed options plays, but that was not an option offense.

I'd also vote no.   They were not an option team.  The last option team for the huskers was when Frank was fired.  JMO
