Jamelle Holieway was the only true freshman QB to lead his team to the NC prior to Trevor Lawrence. This is the 1985 (season) Orange Bowl game vs. Penn State.

Russell White - early 90s All-American RB @ Cal.  He, Vaughn Dunbar (IU), and Trevor Cobb (Rice) have always stuck in my mind, as they were great as I came of age as a college football fan.

Brett Favre
Sigh.  So I look up "best player to wear so-and-so number" for this sometimes, and of course, they all have Favre for #4.  In college football history.  A QB at a mid-major who wasn't an All-American, didn't win any awards, and had very pedestrian stats.  People can't freaking separate the NFL career from the college career, and they should be embarrassed.



I'd be willing to bet there were 50+ players who wore #4 with better college careers than Favre.  Hell, I'd even say over half the P5 programs' best #4 had a better career than Favre did.

Thank you for putting the year of the season.  I hate when they call it the next year's bowl name, which is standard practice. 


It's especially fun with a bowl that hopped its date around, like the Gator Bowl - between Jan 1 and Dec 30 or 31.  So for at least a season or two, there's 2 Gator Bowls in the same year.
