Just some thoughts on the matter.  Expressed on another site.

After FAU:

Quote
Well, here we go. The natives are getting restless...

Barnes has taken a UT program that was a dumpster fire after... whoever the previous two coaches were, the names don't spring to mind...

And built one of the best programs in the country. And given us one of the three or four best eras in program history. If not higher.

And did it with class, and not a hint of scandal.

He has his drawbacks. His post-season performance is a matter of record. Not as quantifiable:

a penchant for taking 5-stars, and turning them into 3-stars (e.g., Philips). With the trade-off, taking 3s and turning them into 4s and 5s (e.g., Williams, Bone, Admiral).

He really needs a deep run this year, to stave off the trolls and negavols. And I hope he gets one. If we get hot -- which no one can account for -- and cut down turnovers, we have two platoons that can keep us in the game with ANYBODY. We should've beaten the Cajuns by at least 20. We're our own worst enemy right now. But it's sports, and anything can happen. And does.

I hope we make at least the Elite 8. And that CRB is contemplating retiring, on his own terms, and with dignity.

He's earned it.

After Duke:

Let's see...what was it I said? Oh yeah...

And that, fellas, is why I get paid the big bucks (LOL).

Turns out, Barnes CAN coach a little bit.

Now coach -- don't make me eat my words...

FDU did us a huge solid. We didn't want to see that big fellow for Purdue.

Gotta get this next one. After that: three more to a natty.

If ONE GUY gets a hot hand, and one or two don't go into a shell -- like today --

we can beat ANYBODY. Two platoons. All night long...

Say -- where is that prince of a fella who said:

"Tennessee is not even in the same class as Duke, by along shot. Duke will win by at least 20."

That kind of clairvoyance doesn't come along every day.

Quote
I watched about the last 10 minutes of the FAU-FDU game. I was impressed. Those boys can play -- both teams. The FDU pg was a ZZ clone. If he made the layup on that spectacular move, when it was still close... it just wouldn't drop.

It doesn't SEEM like FAU's bench is too deep. I hope I'm right. Two-platoon 'em. Wear their asses out with our D. Take 'em to the end of the shot clock, over and over. Make shots. Don't turn it over.

And get to the elite 8. Just to shut up the negaBarneses.

I wish I was confident about this one. But I ain't.

We'll see...

Was briefly watching a sports program today and they stated that Tennessee is now favored to make the final four according to Las Vegas betting  line.
That doesn't do Barnes any favors.
BTW..have been following UT basketball since the mid 60's and this is the best sustained era of basketball we've enjoyed

I love Coach Barnes. Class act all the way.

This isn’t football.

Anyone wanting Barnes fired is a damn fool.

Keep him until he doesn’t want to be here anymore.

I started in earnest when Ron Widby was playing
President Harry S. Truman said: “The fundamental basis of this nation’s laws was given to Moses on the Mount.  The fundamental basis of our Bill of Rights comes from the teachings…  If we don't have the proper fundamental moral background, we will finally wind up with a totalitarian government which does not believe in rights for anybody except the state.”

I don't go back that far.
But I remember Jimmy England...
Listening to John Ward call the play by play, in Memphis, on the old fruit gum stereo console in the living room... man, he was great.  Painted the picture with words.  We had a good run in the late 60s...
Then, in HS in Georgia -- everyone knew I was a big UT fan.  But it was rough times.  The 70s.  The Vols got worse on the gridiron every year.  That long streak to Bama -- I was in college when it finally ended, an upperclassman, and had become disinterested in the Vols' mediocrity.  I had much bigger fish to fry...

But '75, 76.  Ernie and Bernie.  Cover of SI.  My buddy and I -- both shooting guards/forwards -- got dubbed "Ernie and Bernie".  I once got hot, and poured in 29. Got my picture in the paper.  Still have the clipping.  12 of 21, "mostly from 15-25 feet."  Before the 3-point line.  I figure I woulda scored 35 or so with it.  8 minute quarters, if I recall.  Maybe 10.  Don't remember.

My moment of hardwood glory.  ( ^ ;

Only I almost never played on hardwood.  Mostly poured concrete, covered with tile.  Like a Walmart.  I discovered I could dunk late in 10th grade.  Spent an afternoon just running around the gym, throwing 'em down.  In old Chuck Taylor All-Stars.  Flip-flops, with a canvas upper.

My knees still hurt from playing 3 years on those floors (I played before that, in Memphis.  can't remember what kind of floor my JHS gym had.  9th grade, they bussed in Melrose kids.  I still started.  We played 'em, home and home.  I've written about that before...).  And 20 years of jogging in cheap shoes.

Was in a fraternity with a guy from Marietta.  A UGA fan who went to school with Dale Ellis.  He was more excited about Dale's success at UT than I was.

The 90s were pretty dreadful. For hoops.  Great for FB, of course.

Jerry Green (?) brought us some success.  I was older now, had reignited my Vol passion during the 90s.

Buzzball came along.  I remember going to a football game, and catching a hoops exhibition that evening.  Buzz made a bad impression on my older brother.  The team would huddle on the floor during timeouts.  Buzz snapped his fingers at some ball boy or something, and pointed to where his chair should go.  My brother thought he was a prissy little jerk.  Oh well...

Then Bruce.  Happy days.  Great, exciting basketball.  I worked with a guy -- he was my supervisor my first couple of years.  Viet Nam vet, served in Germany after that.  He came from the Hood.  But had acquired some polish.  He made about the highest Sergeant you could make.  He was a good man to work for.  Early on, I was still trying to compromise my party ways with having a "real" job.  He came up to me one morning, and told me "man, you got the dragon breath."  I just nodded.  I was still hungover.  "Don't come in here like that no mo'.  Heah?"

That was it.  I didn't.

He was in a long-term relationship with a woman from Kentucky.  He met her while stationed there.  They weren't married.  Except they were.  He still kept a picture of his lover from Germany on a shelf behind his desk.  Okay...

His "son" -- that's what he called him; his girlfriend's boy -- played ball with Chris Lofton in Mayfield.  He was good, too -- wound up on the bench at Kentucky as a... teaching assistant?  What do you call them?

We marveled together at Chris' success on the Hill.  Talked about the game last night, that sort of thing...

What an era for UT Hoops.

And now Barnes.  One of the best runs we've had.  Man, I hope we get to the FF...

Got into it Bernie’s first year.
Did not miss a single game Bernard played in Stokely.

Jerry Green was very mediocre…..Kevin O’Neil recruited all his good players.
He lived on Kevin’s talent.

Best coaches:
Mears
Pearl
Barnes

They got another year?  Bring 'em back!
A good season.  Injuries kept it from being a great one.
If only ZZ hadn't gotten hurt.  Just when we had gotten back to full strength.
Still -- Sweet 16.  Rose to #2.  Pretty damn good.
The mindless "fire Barnes" crowd will use this game as ammunition.  Fuck 'em.
I do hope he considers retirement, though.  I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little tired of this "defense first" mentality.

Grateful for what he's done, though.  Want him to leave with dignity.
Oh well.
I agree with JG.

Damn.

That's about all I got to say.

We have one athlete that isnt redshirting and he played 12 minutes tonight and scored zero

JJJ  injured all time and NEVER took charge off a game. Plays like hes old as Grady from Sanford and Son

Olivia  aka Xanax, Shows up 1 out of every 5 or 10 games.

Uros. Cant keep fro  giving the refs a reason to beat us

Santi. The only guy of these 4 that appears to give a rats ass about winning.

Dilione will run the point next year.
Jefferson good athlete hope hes ready
Edwards hope he stays
Estrella the first talented big man we have landed in a while
Carr Skinnly as heck but confident and can score
Awaka back
Aidoo back I guess
Cade Phillip at least will put out effort till he develops
Zakia maybe ready by January
