SEC 2023 Prognostications
« on: January 24, 2023, 09:26:44 AM »
UGA had to drop Oklahoma from their slate, replaced with a much inferior opponent, so their four OOC games are pretty much given Ws.  They return a pretty sound core on D and O.  The "contested" games appear to be:

@ Tennessee
Florida
@ Auburn?
Ole Miss
South Carolina

How will they do without their 47 year old quarterback?

LSU opens with FSU again and then has 3 laughable ooc games that should prohibit them from eligibility should they make the playoffs or NY6.

The SEC west slate is hard to gauge.  Don't know how good any of those teams are likely to be.  I barely know how good I expect LSU to be.  Alabama will probably be really good.

We pull Mizzou from the East, and usual foe Florida.  I have never seen Florida so late on the schedule.  Nov. 11, 3rd to last game.

Strictly internally speaking, the team should improve within itself by about a +2 W/L metric, so after going 9-3 regular season, it's going to "feel" like a disappointment if the team doesn't reach at least 10 wins.  Not stubbing our toe against the Seminoles again will be key.  I have no idea how good those guys are likely to be.

I've seen FSU in several "too early" top tens, FWIW.  But they have a tendency to over achieve one year and drop out the next, much like UNC.

Heh, it's entertaining to note how many "Dawg fans" wanted Stetson benched last year and early this year for the backups.  The apparent heir is a more typical tall Stafford kind of dude.  They have another backup who is more mobile, which in my view adds a big threat dimension if he also is reasonably accurate.

Bennett won the starting job in part because he was so mobile, and had a strong more accurate arm than many suspected.

Alabama moving on from their DC, I hear.

What about BOB?  To hear Bama fans tell it, he's the bigger problem.

Yup,  I remember articles and podcasts raising the question over and over about Bennett not remaining the starter.  I was incredulous.  Demented thinking.

The word fan is short for something, I forget.  Often the backup QB is the most popular player on any team struggling.  Fortunately, a good coaching staff will make better decisions.  Carson Beck was the 2 last season, but will face some serious competition I think.  I dunno who ends up starting.

The one that doesn't transfer.

to answer late, they're both gone. got oc from nd and dc from pruitt or something. i don't know, it's weird. at least he and saban are familiar, even at bama.

the talent, of course, is still there to have a really good to great team. but i got no clue about the coords or how they will work with this team.

I keep wondering how long Saban can keep it up. He’s been at an elite level for what, 15 years now ?  I know Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno had some amazing, long runs, but nothing like Saban. Heck, I think Paterno only won the MNC once ? Bowden twice ?

Even Bob Stoops had some so-so years mixed in with his time. What would happen if Bama only wins 8 games in a season?

He's 71 or so, right?  Presume he's in excellent health for his age, he has to be tiring a bit at times with the grind.  I have suspected many old coaches end up being "CEOs" while "COOs" do the hard work and they "supervise" lightly.  He doesn't seem that way to me given his reactions on the sideline at times.

I figure he has maybe 5 years left as HC, how the team fares in that period is likely to be 11+ win seasons because of recruiting.  Speaking of which, his age is already an anti-recruiting factor.  Would you go to Bama realizing he may not be there or UGA where Smart is 99.99% likely to remain a while?

UGA has never beaten Alabama in the SEC CG in football.  They haven't beaten Bama much at all of course.

Will A&M have a run?  Is LSU "back"?  Is Tennessee?  Is Florida going to have a pulse?

LSU has to have been there first in order to be "back."

I don't remember anything prior to 2020.

All is darkness.
