Title: Name that Year
Post by: OrangeAfroMan on March 27, 2022, 09:36:27 PM
A fun off-season thread could be screenshots posted from random seasons and you have to guess what year or share some thoughts about it.
Here's one.
If people like it, we can keep it going.
Youtube has weekly ESPN highlight show footage.

Texas Tech @ Penn St? A season opening game?

1995?

I specifically remember watching this game because it was the first time I ever watched anything Texas Tech. And as a kid living in Texas at the time, it kinda reminds me how coverage for the Aggies and Longhorns, and prime-timing their games, drowned out the other Texas schools. All the local papers from Houston to San Antonio devoted there college coverage to those two, understandably.

From what I remember, Texas Tech moved into the rankings the next week up to 22nd. Even though they lost, the voters were impressed enough with the Red Raiders going toe to toe with a 4th ranked team on the road.

'92 Wash at USC just a guess based on graphics and when Conway tore up Texas Tech in a Cotton Bowl around that time.  maybe that was Keyshawn?
'89 Canes at MSU.    this is around the time when the Canes went to visit Big Ten schools and pulled out two close ones and a whipping at Madison, this one at EL and another one around the same time period at the Big House.  I just remember the Canes stuffing Sparty at the goal line somewhat late in that game, and that weasel Huerta kept crushing field goals.

the OU at N game, I may need to reflect longer but guessing '86.  It looks dark and rainy, and OU didn't get their magic going until the 2nd half.  One of the best OU/N games of all-time.  Certainly worth a watch to see Keith Jackson's ridiculousness (the TE).  Keith Jackson is on the call with Tim Brant.

edit: the other tell,  OU in all white, and Nebraska in all red (a disgraceful look).

Well, then it had to be 87.  Damn

The highly anticipated Nebraska-Oklahoma “Game of the Century II” turned out to be a one-sided affair that failed to live up to the buildup — and the Huskers failed to back up their unusually brash predictions of victory.
Nebraska was a four-point favorite and had moved ahead of Oklahoma into the No. 1 spot in the polls during the week of the game. The 900-plus media credentials issued for the contest set a Memorial Stadium record.
The Huskers jumped to a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter when Keith Jones’ 25-yard run capped an 84-yard drive, but after that the game was virtually all Oklahoma. The Sooners claimed their fourth consecutive Big Eight title and retook the No. 1 ranking with a 17-7 win that was considerably more decisive on the field than it was on the scoreboard.

No, it has to be 1984.  Those are ABC graphics and CBS did game in 87, and the halftime stats were not in Nebraska favor in 87.  Odd quirk where game was in Lincoln in both 86 and 87.  It was also sunny in 87.

This was the first game I watched with Kirk Herbstreit announcing. This was also the first college football broadcast for the season in which this game was played. In the opening frame a striking late summer sun prolongs the days across the upper Midwest; not due for darkness until past 9PM:

This might be an easier one, but first a few hints:

The road team wore unconventional uniforms that weren’t well received. And the road team was thoroughly beaten down in a truly unusual sight, because by the time I grew into watching college football it was a once- or twice-in-a-decade rarity for this university to get blown out.

Title: Re: Name that Year

Is that UCLA v Texas shot from Route 66?

Yes!

As for Marty Cherry, the very brief Longhorns QB pictured:

“Unless they lived through the worst home loss in UT history, Longhorn fans likely don't recall the name of Marty Cherry. The sophomore from the Arkansas side of Texarkana got a rough football baptism as a relief pitcher for the eleventh-ranked Horns on a hot mid-September day in 1997. A stunning 66-3 whipping from UCLA --- to live in infamy as "Rout 66" -- ultimately resulted in a positive turn for Cherry. That was despite a tough day at the office. Cherry, not any more or less effective than his teammates, had three interceptions amid his 9-18 passing and was roughed up for minus 25 yards and a lost fumble on five sacks.

Push fast-forward one year to autumn '98. A personable, sunny Mack Brown had replaced Mackovic at The Forty Acres. Ricky Williams was Heisman-bound and a freckle-faced youngster named Major Applewhite was coming on strong as a fill-in for injured senior QB Richard Walton. Cherry? He'd been picked off by noted male fashion photographer Bruce Weber, who saw Marty's handsome mug on the televised UCLA debacle and had his assistants contact Cherry about a possible photo shoot. Cherry reportedly deflected the first advances but took up the offer in February '98.

The guy later described by one writer as "square-jawed and aqua-eyed," was soon modeling for Abercrombie & Fitch and strolling the catwalk in Italy. By the '98 season, Cherry had traded in his burnt orange and white togs for more uplifting finery. After dropping 25 pounds from his 6-2, 200 frame, he was featured, along with a football, in a Ralph Lauren Chaps billboard in Manhattan's Times Square.”

2003 season.

Yes!

The big story going into the game was Kansas State QB Ell Roberson playing despite a sudden investigation - from Wikie: 2004 Fiesta Bowl controversy: "In the early morning hours of New Year's Day, 2004, police were called to the Kansas State team hotel in Paradise Valley, Arizona, by a woman who accused Roberson of assaulting her. Roberson and the rest of the Kansas State team were in town to play Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl. Police did not arrest Roberson, and later determined that no crime had been committed and no charges should be filed, but an investigation by the Kansas State athletic department concluded that Roberson and several other players had violated unspecified team rules. As a result, Roberson was stripped of his scholarship by head coach Bill Snyder. Snyder decided this after the bowl game, which the Wildcats lost 35-28."

This board right here was started by Drew in 2017.

The original CFN board was 2001, I believe. I joined in 2002 and we had a group of 7 moderators there.

Then we moved to Scout in 2007 or 2008, when Pete sold CFN to them, and I was the sole admin (247 policy) but was able to make several posters moderators. That was a good run for us.

We were offered, albeit too late, to make the move to 247 with Scout. By the time that was offered to me, Drew had already created this.

So here we are.

Correct about CFB51.com 2017 startup. I do not recall what year the original board opened, or what year I joined. I am sure I got in on the action in its early days while ELA was still, Ann Arbor Adam - which reminds me of a story.
I had a law school classmate in the early 1980s who graduated from MSU, who told me that when the USSR national basketball team did their exhibition tours in the USA playing D-1 college teams in the November exhibition season, he and his MSU classmates would  watch the Soviets play Michigan and cheer for the Soviets.
How ELA ever crossed that divide would constitute a story in and of itself.

2003 is correct!

2002 is a good guess; both schools began their home-and-home series with TX A&M @ Pittsburgh in 2002 before TX A&M hosted in 2003. These two years were also Fitzgerald’s two years at Pitt - 2002 & 2003.

This was the first time I watched Larry Fitzgerald and at least for me this was his coming out party with a stat-line of 7 receptions, 135 yds, and 3 TDS. If a college player can somehow foreshadow an NFL Hall of Fame Career, this is a fitting example.
