This is a play on CD's name that picture thread, but suggest we can keep this as an actual ongoing thread.
The game is simple: someone posts a picture of a skyline, a scenic place, etc. Whoever is first to successfully guess that location gets the honor of posting the next entry in the game.
I'll start with a pretty easy one...
Edit: Google reverse image search is cheating BTW... Gotta guess it honestly. That MAY include, if you have a specific location that you think it might be, looking up photos of said location to confirm. But reverse image search is verboten.
Edit 2: Some of these, as we go farther and more obscure, may be difficult. It may require providing hints. Generally it's best to give a few people opportunities to guess before you start throwing out hints.

Firenze
Ding ding ding!
You're up, 94.

One of those white buildings right along the Arno, on the opposite bank from this camera, but this side of Uffizi, is the hotel where we stayed last time we were there. Had a great window view of the dome of the Duomo.
I love that town, easily in my top 3 or 4 outside of the USA. Probably in my top 3 or 4 even including the USA. :)

Ah so that's the rule? Cool, I like it.

Firenze
Florence--from the Renaissance dome--was my first thought but I didn't know if a river ran through it and was too lazy to check.
P.S. What dissuaded me from Florence was a tower that looked to me like a minaret.

Flagstaff?
-
Flagstaff?
Nope. Although I have snow-skied at the Arizona Snow Bowl which is lose to Flagstaff.

Yeah that's the Arno, and a super-famous bridge runs across it-- the Ponte Vecchio which translates to "Old Bridge." During WW2 the allies took out many of the bridges in Florence, but they saved this bridge, along with much of Florence's other historical architecture.

No but you're getting warmer

Yeah I think it's probably too small of a town. It's a popular tourist destination so I thought some folks would know it.
Colorado is correct and think... gambling.

That's a nice picture. I modified my earlier post to say that I thought I saw a minaret in your previous picture, and that steered me away from Florence.
Interesting how the Romance languages share similar vocabulary.
Vecchio in Italian is viejo in Spanish and vieux in French.
Georges Guynemer, France's 2nd-ranking ace in WWI with 53 victories, had painted on the side of his Spad, "Vieux Charles."

For some reason, your image didn't show on my screen. I copied the url and pasted it into the address of a new tab and it opened up.

I've been to Milwaukee once, 30-something years ago, for a Yanks @ Brewers game. It was at night. Ron Guidry pitched a good game for the victory.
I've seen pictures of a model railroad set in Milwaukee with a photo backdrop that in my memory resembles the skyline that HB posted.
Was the name of that city revealed?

Re: Dayton
Looks nice. Reminds me a little of Austin maybe 30 years ago.
I've never been to Ohio. I wanted to go up to Columbus when Texas played Ohio State in 2005 but it didn't work out.
-
Hmmm, another cityscape against mountains.
Is it Salt Lake City?
-
Not Salt Lake, good guess though.
Dayton has the USAF Museum which is incredible, and free. It's the best aircraft museum I've ever seen by far, it dwarfs the Smithsonian.
-
Phoenix?
-
The "Dayton" one was actually Peoria IL, according to a reverse google search.
-
Phoenix?
Yes. Looks like I missed on Dayton, I'm not very good at this thread.
-
Yes. Looks like I missed on Dayton, I'm not very good at this thread.
That picture of Phoenix reminded me of how it looked in May 1993, when my battalion commander, S3, and me (Bn XO) attended a reunion of the WWII American Volunteer Group ("Flying Tigers"). The 229th Avn Regiment had gotten itself unofficially affiliated with the AVG. AVG ace Tex Hill spoke our our battalion's activation ceremony as an AH-64 unit. We were 3rd Bn, 229th Aviation, so we named ourselves "Hell's Angels," since the 3rd squadron of the AVG went by that name.
I met this guy, R. T. Smith, AVG ace and Squadron Leader of the Hell's Angels, at the convention.

Decals of the "Flying Tiger" cartoon were sent by Walt Disney Studios.

I used to drive through Charlotte on my way from Fort Bragg, NC, to Tulsa, and back. Maybe 12-15 times. It just has that look about it. Its nickname is the "Queen City."
OK--here we go. This is not Charlotte. And this city is not--to the best of my knowledge--called the "Queen City."

Yup, as noted, apparently an old photo, but neat I thought.

There are rules against everything apparently, I broke about 47 of them.
I'm sorry. Somebody post another skyline.

Ya somebody I have to leave and will jump in later

You got it, MrNubbz.
I saw the capitol building and figured SLC or Boise with the mountains .But since i often sing “Well it’s … 8’oclock in Boise – Idaho ……I’ll find my limo driver, Mister, take us to the show.” thought tha might work ok I'll have to find Schenectady sky line or sum such and will be back

The rules are in the first post, and there is no rule against posting a city that has already been posted. I'm not going to expect everyone participating in this thread to keep track of every other location already covered, so I expect there will be duplicates over time.

Well that didn't take long.

Nope.

There aren't many of those. Albany, NY?

Las Vegas.

Reno?

No, Vegas area but technically not Vegas.
It is the city that contains the Las Vegas strip, the Las Vegas airport, UNLV, the LV Raiders stadium, and the LV Golden Knights arena. But it isn't Las Vegas.

Very tricky, you are.

Yeah, I was going to post the strip as a "trick question" so that everyone would guess Las Vegas and be wrong, but then I saw the picture of the NYNY casino, and was able to milk an NYC guess before the Vegas guess.

Not Sorrento, definitely on the Med.

Yes it's in Europe.
Seville?
Not Seville.
It's in France.

Nice?
Cannes?
Does not look like Marseille or Toulon, to me.

Nice?
indeed, Nice is nice.

I'm noticing that the Mediterranean cities all sort of look alike, as do the American cities on rivers. Tough to tell a lot of them apart.

Marseille looks different, as does Toulon. This might be tough.

I liked it, it's a pretty town. Like much of the Med, the beach is rocky and uncomfortable, but that's true for lots of places over there.

Yup, Biarritz had a nice beach on the ATL. That is the only beach I've seen in France akin to ours. Barcelona had a nice one. They even have a "Be Gay Beach", not that there's anything wrong with that.

Yup beaches in Barcelona were really nice.

Nice, I was born in Virginia Beach. I even lived there, up until I was a few months old. Good times.

Never been there but pretty much knew it had to be Asia. But I had to do some "worlds tallest buildings" sleuthing to figure it out.

Here is one place that I've been, but unfortunately never got a good skyline photo of it myself so I'll have to borrow from others...

I figured it was Asia but had no idea which of the many cities in China, or perhaps Malaysia, it might be. That's why I suspected you'd probably been there. I've never been to Asia, which is sort of remarkable given my training and occupation. One of my peers who did the exact same job I did and is also a close friend, spent about a year off and on, in Singapore and China. I seemed to always get the comparable posts, but in Europe.
-
I have not been to this one, just a random.

We will be landing in Munich in November. Really looking forward to that trip.

Yeah, I've been to Taipei, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur.
I want to do Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore, and Beijing. Would go to any of those for vacation except possibly Singapore--I don't know if there's enough of a draw there if I'm paying for it out of my own pocket.
-
I would not be jealous.
I greatly enjoyed Beijing, but it was a "cram all the touristy shit you can into a day and a half while jet lagged" trip. I would love to spend a couple weeks there.
We were in Fuzhou, Jiangxi province for 5 days. By no means, a tourist destination, but it was interesting to see "real" China. Virtually no one spoke English and we had to rely completely on our guide.
I do not remember much of Guangzhou, the city. We stayed on Shamian Island, which is the home to many former consulates and has a half French, half Dutch feel. It was very much isolated from the rest of the city.
We flew out of Hong Kong, but we came in by train in the dark and left in the middle of the same night. I wish we could have spent a little time there.
-
In which foreign country are you most likely to be served up a bowl of eyeball soup?
-
I would not be jealous.
Oh I'm not. I'm a huge Europhile going back to my youngest days of reading Euro-based fantasy fiction, swords and sorcerers, knights and kings, etc. I've never had much desire to go to Asia.
-
For me it's not either/or... I love going to Asia, and I love going to Europe.
-
One of my SIL is Chinese. She took her four kids there last year (my BIL passed away young) and they wore gas masks the whole time because they couldn't breathe. And they live in greater LA.

That would be the reason to avoid Beijing from what I've heard. Air quality is utter crap.
Shenzhen and Shanghai, when I was there, had no issues with air quality. Of course, they're coastal, so that probably means a lot. That was three different visits around 2014-15, so it wouldn't be that far removed from what we'd expect to see now.
-
Sorry - it was 2019 - not last year.
I'm trying to forget last year. Every drink helps.

Time for a clue: Mary's friend, Tucker, visited this city twice last year; much to the surprise of Pat.
-
indeed, Nice is nice.
I was going to say Nice, but I was on my lunch break and wouldn't have been able to check to see if I got it right. I have not been to France, but it was Mediterranean, it wasn't Monte Carlo, and the next logical guess was Nice.
I can't prove that, of course, but then no one can prove otherwise either. :)

Hell you'll be missing a that small little get together celebrating the Mad King Ludwig's nuptuals

Uhh, you don't have toll booths on the freeway. You have them on the tollway or the turnpike. Or the expressway, or the interstate, depending on where you are. But not the freeway.
