MSU gets their first 2019 commit in 4* in state OT Spencer Brown from Walled Lake Western
Major position of need, and one Dantonio has always struggled to recruit.
-
So, this fellow is a rising junior right now? He played as a sophomore and folks recruited him?
Fascinating.
-
5 star OT Doug Nester commit to the Bucks out of West Virginia

Last 5* from WV?
-
Man I don't know. Wasn't there a running back that went to USC a million years ago? I vaguely remember that
-
Jason Gwaltney, who despite my memory of him going to USC actually went to West Virginia
-
Hell, the last time (based on composite ranking) WV produced a 4* recruit was OG Josh Jenkins in 2008 (who went to WVU), and there were two years in there without a 3*.
Before that, WR Brandon Barnett in 2004, who also went to WVU.
TE R.J. Coleman in 2002 who went to OSU, but I've never actually heard of him.
Actually Gwaltney went to WVU, but wasn't from West Virginia. As far back as the composite rankings go, WV hasn't produced a 5*
-
That must have been why I thought he was from there. I remember the Buckeyes and Trojans recruiting him a bunch.

I pray for this young man and his future back injury
-
Well at least it wasn't all bad. QB Dwan Mathis, a 4* recruit committed, for MSUs second commitment. OSU has been poking around, but hasn't offered. That could mess things up. He'd be Dantonio most athletic QB by far.
-
Michigan's 2019 class is off to a pretty good start. Rankings are still very early and a lot of this will change.
5* DL Chris Hinton Jr. (6'4, 265 lbs.) from Georgia
5* DL Stephen Herron Jr. (6'3, 235 lbs.) from Kentucky
4* OL Nolan Rumler (6-4, 290 lbs.) from Ohio
4* LB Charles Thomas (6-0, 220 lbs.) from Florida
Hinton's younger brother Myles Hinton (6-6, 320) is an early 5* rated as the #1 player in Georgia and the #1 OT in the nation for the 2020 class in the WAY too early 2020 247Composite rankings. Michigan is the early leader in the club-house there, but it's still early.
The Hinton bros. dad was Chris Hinton- the #4 overall pick in the 1983 draft out of Northwestern. He was famously the guy that was traded to the Colts for John Elway. Hinton played left tackle and left guard in the NFL for 13 years and made 3 All-Pro teams and was a 7-time Pro Bowler.
Dad was pretty good at football, and now he has two jumbo sized sons who are both rated 5*'s with offers from everyone in the country.
-
Apparently 5* OT Devontae Dobbs (the #1 OT in the country and #1 player in MI) wanted to commit over the weekend, but was convinced to take his time per Steve Wiltfong.
FWIW, both Wiltfong and Trieu, as well as the MSU 247 guy, flipped their pick to MSU after the weekend.
A rare bit of fresh air instead of the rush to commit followed by a decommitment. If they can land him and Barnett, working that Belleville pipeline the past couple years will have really paid off.
-
Last 5* from WV?
Randy Moss I think.
I don't follow krootin but wouldn't be shocked if there were a few more. The Huntington area occasionally produces quality talent.
-

The pipeline being filled with Plan A QBs is a welcome relief to a lull following Maxwell in that department. We got lucky Cook panned out because our QB recruiting was not going well from about 2010-2014 otherwise.
2010 - Joe Boisture
2012 - Tyler O'Conner
2013 - Damion Terry
2014 - None
UM Rivals guy
Brandon Brown @bsb_Wolverine
I like Mathis a lot....phenomenal athlete.
247 Midwest guy
Josh Helmholdt @joshhelmholdt
2019 four-star Dwan Mathis is the best #MichiganState QB commit I've scouted in 15 years.

Believe that the head coach at Belleville is a former assistant of Thomas Wilcher's at Cass Tech and the OL coach is David Dawson- former Michigan OL.
Something seems strange with regards to them and Michigan. Neither one seem receptive at all. Maybe there's an issue there between head coach or Dawson and Harbaugh or someone on Harbaugh's staff?
I don't care much about OL recruit rankings- they are a crap shoot at best- but the kid is the #1 player in the state at a huge position of need and losing him to the in-state rival would suck.
-

Julian Barnett, another top 50 kid from Belleville has repeatedly said it's MSU or ND. When asked about Michigan, he said they haven't even really contacted him.
There has to be something there between UM and Belleville. Timing works out well for MSU considering all the kids they are suddenly producing. Even Dwan Mathis is a Belleville kid playing for Oak Park.

yeah Barnett isn't even considering Michigan like at all. Michigan has never been in it- like at all.
I still think they have a shot with Dobbs- but it's dwindling. That one seems to have stalled out bad. They have a lot of ground to make up right now.
Mathis was a great pick-up. That one sucked for me as a Michigan fan. I was really hoping they'd land him. Seems like with Peters being a RS Frosh, McCaffrey being a true frosh that's taking a shirt, and 2 QB's in the 2018 class, they are going extremely slow with the QB recruiting in 2019. I think they've only offered two- JT Daniels who committed to USC and is the #1 QB, and another kid whose name escapes me but his Dad was hired at Michigan for like 20 minutes and then Oregon hired him away the next day.

Michael Johnson. Yeah, have to assume he's Oregon-bound.
247 doesn't list any other 2019 QBs as targets. I wonder if he's really not going after anyone, or if it's hard to land a kid knowing you have 3 QBs in the two classes in front of him. Basically unless both 2018 kids bust, you are looking at one year at most as a starter, and that's only if you don't get passed by the kid behind you.
-

think I heard Harbaugh say his plan was to take one a year. I'm a fan of taking at least one a year. Especially after the QB hell that Michigan went through once Carr left. My god was that an awful run.
Hard part is keeping the QB's around. QB's these days transfer if they don't win the job right away.
I know there was a '19 QB from Texas they were looking at, don't think they really offered, but he committed to tA&M super early. Proto-type pro-style QB too, 6'6, 220 lbs with a big arm. Which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me as Sumlin sucks and tA&M runs more of a spread/running QB style offense. Here's to hoping Sumlin gets fired and this kid realizes he needs to play in a pro-style offense and opens things back up.
-
how about some senseless 2020 recruiting jibberish. I was just perusing the way too early 247Sports 2020 rankings, and the #2 player in the nation and #1 OT is a 6'8, 275 pound kid named Kevin Pyne out of the Boston, Mass. area- Don Brown's old stomping grounds- and Don Brown has a long-standing relationship with his HS coach and that program- and 100% of his Crystal Ball picks right now are for Michigan. The #11 player in the nation and #2 OT is Myles Hinton- the 6'6, 320 pound "little brother" of Michigan commit 5* Chris Hinton Jr. 100% of Hinton's Crystal Ball picks are for Michigan as well.
If those rankings hold, good shot Michigan could wind up with the #1 and #2 OT's in the nation in the same class. Both of them are favoring Michigan right now it seems. Has that ever happened before- #1 OT and #2 OT in the same class?
-
Purdue able to keep 4* DE George Karlaftis, from West Lafayette, at home. Offers from Bama, OSU, ND and the like
-
I watched part of a 9 year old football game near here and spotted a 6'5" 275 pound offensive guard that was really opening up holes. I think he already has 10 offers.
-
Allen Trieu, the top midwest recruiting analyst over on Scout just put in a Crystal Ball for 2019 4* OT Logan Brown (6'6, 285) to Wisconsin. Trieu 21 for 21 on his Crystal Ball picks.
Not a good sign for Michigan. Brown is the #2 rated player in the state of Michigan for 2019 and the #2 rated OT in the state and the #10 rated OT in the nation. Devontae Dobbs (6'5, 280) is the #1 rated player in Michigan and the #1 OT in the nation and right now he's a heavy lean to go out of state.
Would be a complete disaster for Michigan to lose both when they need OT #'s desperately. Long way to go with both as they are 2019s, but Harbaugh needs to pull out all the stops to land both of them.
-
MSU has picked up a lot of momentum with Dobbs, really working that Belleville pipeline. Barnett still seems like the more likely of the two, but Dobbs has gone from a sure bet to go out of state to MSU be very much being in the mix
-
Wow, Logan Brown to UW. MI kid from a UM family. Was expected to be a no brainier Wolverine.
-
Wow, Logan Brown to UW. MI kid from a UM family. Was expected to be a no brainier Wolverine.
This is BIG for UW. He was on his 7th visit yesterday and the game sealed the deal. I just hope he lives up to the STARZ. 6-6 285 as a junior is pretty good. He'll get to 325 after a year in the UW system.
-
From 247's Evan Flood:
**********************************************
Logan Brown (https://247sports.com/Player/Logan-Brown-45572566) isn't' a man of many words.
When asked about why he committed to Wisconsin on Saturday, the Top247 offensive tackle kept it simple.
"The people," he said.
Brown was in attendance for Wisconsin's 24-10 win over Michigan on Saturday. That was his sixth unofficial visit to see the Badgers.
The four-star junior chose the Badgers over the Wolverines, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan State, Louisville, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, and others.
A class of 2019 prospect, Brown can't make his commitment official until next December at the earliest.
Will the nation's seventh ranked offensive tackle be tempted to look around until then?
"It's over," he said.
-
pay back for Michigan going up into Wisconsin and stealing Ben Bredeson in the 2016 class. Bredeson started 5-6 games as a true frosh last year at LG because of injuries and he's been a starter every game this year at LG. Obviously he's been a start able caliber B1G player, but he hasn't really lived up to the STARZ. His pass protection grade according to Pro Football Focus is the lowest of the guards on Michigan's team. Unfortunately he looks to be on that Kyle Kalis career arch.
Brown will get better OL coaching at Wisconsin. He made the right choice. I wouldn't go to Michigan if I was a hot-shot OL recruit right now. Not until they make some changes. I'm convinced that at Michigan Drevno has too much going on, too much on his plate trying to game plan and be the OC and teach the OL. OL coach needs to be an OL coach 24/7 and ONLY coach the offensive line and spend all of his time with the OL.
-
pay back for Michigan going up into Wisconsin and stealing Ben Bredeson in the 2016 class.
While I would have liked him to stay home, his UW offer was to play OG and he wanted to be a tackle. As a tackle, he's a great guard. His brother being at M playing baseball and the fact that his parents hated Andersen sealed the deal.
It was not a "steal". It was a done deal from day one, and UW got its in-state STARZ tackle that year anyway - who also had an M offer. Maybe he'll see the field more next year. Maybe.
-
Logan Brown due for a bump in the 'crootin' rankings per top midwest 247 Sports analyst Steve Witflong. They are looking at him as potential top 10 overall player. Dobbs already is a top 10 player. Pretty crazy if the state does wind up have two tackle prospects rated that high nationally. Don't think it's ever happened before.
Harbaugh still 'crootin Brown even though he's committed to Wisconsin. I don't expect that stop until he signs an LOI with Wisconsin.
-
He doesn't seem like the type to flip. Harbaugh should just respect the kid's choice and leave him alone. Climb another tree or something.
-
He doesn't seem like the type to flip. Harbaugh should just respect the kid's choice and leave him alone. Climb another tree or something.
Yeah I highly doubt he flips.
But that's just silly talk- Harbaugh should absolutely recruit him til he signs an LOI. Why you think Urban always get those flip-a-roos? Ya don't stop til the LOI is signed.
I just watched his newest highlights, don't think his competition is the best but he is...holy shit man he is a specimen. Taller, longer, leaner and looks more nimble and light on his feet than Dobbs.
-
I'm being selfish. ;)
-
I'm being selfish. ;)
me too lol. I want him at Michigan. Badly.
Damn Bastages coming into Michigan taking a lot of players lately.
-
Of all possible flips, Brown seems really low on the list.
-
Of all possible flips, Brown seems really low on the list.
true. but there's still 2+ years away from when he'd actually sign. That's like an eternity in this world. If you've been following 'crootin long enough- you know that anything can and will happen.
-
One year. He's 2019 so he can sign next December. I think a June signing is still on the table, but I doubt the SEC, Michigan and OSU will allow that to happen.
Anyway, he wants to enroll early so he can get into academics and start with the vaunted strength program in Madison.
-
A day after getting an OSU offer, Julian Barnett a top 100 WR/DB commits to MSU. Teammate of Dobbs who is a top OT. Looking good for MSU.
-
Wow, huge.

i don't like a june (summer) signing unless we're going to allow for official visits in jr year. and so many things change from both the kids' and schools' perspectives from that time until december of their sr year, i don't think it's a good idea. jmo.
as for bama, our 19 class is getting a much better start than our 18 class did.
5* rb sanders
4* ot quick
4* olb mwikuta
4* og hammond
4* s gant
-
Wow, huge.
yup. all but locks up Dobbs for MSU.
Didn't really affect 2018 much, but losing Wheatley has just devastated Michigan's in-state recruiting hopes in 2019 and sounds like it's leaking over to 2020. In the way too early 2020 rankings, OG Justin Rogers has been tabbed as the #1 player in the state and a 5* by 247. MSU, OSU, Tennessee, Oregon- already offered him months ago. Michigan for some reason has refused to offer him. He just dropped Michigan. Looks like it's going to be Ohio State or MSU.
-
Buddy texted me earlier about Enos potentially joining the staff at UM. That will help in state recruiting.
-
What role would he occupy? There are currently no openings on that staff for a guy of his caliber. Unless they are gonna move Drevno to OL coach only, or move him out.
-
Buddy texted me earlier about Enos potentially joining the staff at UM. That will help in state recruiting.
saw that he's talked with Harbaugh. would be a home run hire. Enos is a great coach and an ace recruiter.
-

They'll be able to add a 10th coach for 2018 with that new rule.
Drevno has got to go imo. A demotion won't even do. Greg Frey is a better version of Drevno and he's already on the staff coaching the tackles and TE's. Just let Frey coach the entire OL, move JayBaugh back to TE's, hire Enos to be the RB's coach and Co-OC with Pep and you're back in biz.
EDIT: I'd love to see Drevno and Pep go, but I don't think Jim will push both of them out. Might not even push one out. He's a loyal guy and those two are "his guys". Maybe too loyal.
-
I know about the 10th coach thing, but I can't see Enos coming in for anything less than being a co-coordinator. He's too valuable to do anything else. There will be plenty of openings for him.
-
Is it against NCAA rules for a coach to tweet or re-tweet about a kid who has not officially signed yet?
-
MSU adds 3* CB Jordan Huff from GA as the 4th member of their class.
-

Hopefully you are right. I'd hate to see a talented MSU guy at UM.
-

Obviously things change, but he said he's not even taking any of his visits. His recruitment is done.

From 247:
As Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh (https://247sports.com/Coach/Jim-Harbaugh-732) is expected to see Rice graduate transfer Calvin Anderson (https://247sports.com/Player/Calvin-Anderson-33132) early next week, 247Sports can also confirm that both Harbaugh and new assistant Dan Enos (https://247sports.com/Coach/Dan-Enos-952) are in Kansas City on Friday.
Among the stops? The duo will see Mission (KS) Blue Valley North 2019 four-star quarterback and Wisconsin verbal commitment Graham Mertz (https://247sports.com/Player/Graham-Mertz-46038869). They'll also drop in on 2018 verbal commitment Ronnie Bell (https://247sports.com/Player/Ronnie-Bell-46050311) on Friday as well.
I wonder if Jimmy's gonna tell him to come to Michigan so he can compete with a transfer QB every year.
-
Obviously things change, but he said he's not even taking any of his visits. His recruitment is done.
So now UM offers?
-

That's what "they" do.
They let the UW's and MSU's of the world do their scouting for them, and then they pounce.
-
That's what "they" do.

Well this isn't like that. He's the #2 recruit in the state, that every one else (ND, OSU) has been after for a while.
-
Oops in this one.
But you get my point.
-
Oops in this one.
But you get my point.
Oh yeah when UM late offers a low 3 star kid, I get it
-
What the hell does it mean to re-offer someone?
https://twitter.com/juicedupjameson/status/954528679819956225
-
I'm guessing it means that Frost is re-affirming some offers and that he might not be honoring all of the ones from Riley?
-
yup. coaching change
-
ELA:
I'd just like to congratulate you on coining the outstanding name for this thread.
One just doesn't get to encounter the word "jibberish" often enough these days.
Things that qualify as jibberish, yes. Use of the word, no.

Badgers got #6 last night when Bryson Shaw committed to go to Madison.
Potomac, Md. (The Bullis School), recruit Bryson Shaw announced on Twitter (https://twitter.com/bshaw272727/status/957439360806289409/photo/1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=about%3Asrcdoc)that he verbally committed to Wisconsin.
Shaw is rated as a three-star recruit at safety by both 247Sports’ composite rankings (https://247sports.com/Player/Bryson-Shaw-46048331) and Rivals. (https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2019/bryson-shaw-185085) According to 247Sports, (https://247sports.com/Recruitment/Bryson-Shaw-111768/RecruitInterests) he holds offers from Maryland, Duke, Rutgers, Virginia, Wake Forest, Syracuse and West Virginia. Rivals also shows (https://n.rivals.com/content/prospects/2019/bryson-shaw-185085)offers from Northwestern, Pitt, North Carolina and Boston College.
Shaw is verbal commit No. 6 for Wisconsin in what is shaping up to be a highly intriguing class of 2019, joining the likes of Grantsburg, Wis., athlete Leo Chenal, Kansas quarterback Graham Mertz, offensive lineman Logan Brown, Menomonee Falls, Wis., running back Julius Davis and offensive lineman Joe Tippmann.
-
Definitely a "flip" candidate, with M and O trying to get him to make a visit, but for now, this kid is a Badger and plans an early enrollment.
Nolan Groulx (https://247sports.com/Player/Nolan-Groulx-92195) has been waiting months to verbally commit to Wisconsin. Ever since his unofficial in June, Groulx has been eager to return to Madison to give head coach Paul Chryst (https://247sports.com/Coach/Paul-Chryst-138) his pledge.
On Saturday, he finally got the chance.
Becoming commitment No. 7 for the Badgers in their 2019 recruiting class, one of the nation's most prolific wide receivers opted to take his talents to UW.
-
Lititz (Pa.) Warwick 2019 tight end Hayden Rucci (https://247sports.com/Player/Hayden-Rucci-46039102) tells 247Sports he has committed to Wisconsin.
The four-star recruit also had offers from Boston College, Duke, Indiana, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Syracuse among others.
-
Nice get, I really liked him. PSU legacy
-
The PSU offer will come, as will OSU and Michigan.
If UW can hang on to all the kids they've gotten thus far, it will be a record-breaking class as far as STARZ are concerned.
-
4 star OT Ryan Jacoby commits to the Bucks out of Mentor
-
MSU offered 3* WR Jace Goins from Toledo, who was committed to ND for baseball. He had football offers from Yale, Virginia and Minnesota. Immediately after getting the MSU offer he announced he wasn't playing college baseball...but it also seems like some helmet programs have some interest. My guess is as a full football recruit, he's going to start jumping up the rankings. Apparently he's 6'2" and still growing.
-
2018 was a brutal recruiting year.
2019 off to a very good start. Michigan flips away 4* QB Cade McNamara of Nevada from Notre Dame. Crystal BALLZ for 4* DT Mazi Smith starting to flood in for Michigan, a commitment looks imminent right now.
Michigan sitting at 6 commits and it's still pretty early.
5* DL Chris Hinton of Georgia.
4* DL Stephon Herron Jr of Kentucky.
4* OL Nolan Rumler of Ohio.
4* QB Cade McNamara of Nevada
4* OL Trente Jones of Georgia
3* LB Charles Thomas of Florida
Stanford is coming after Herron Jr hard. Harbs has lost a couple to those nerds. Kinda hard to pass up that degree if you can get into Stanford imo. That one will be on flip watch til the bitter end imo.
They should do well. All comes down to how they perform in the games. Another underwhelming season and this early recruiting momentum is gonna crater.
-
btw 247 updated their rankings.
Two Michigan kids in the top 17 players overall in the nation according to them. Both play OL. Logan Brown at #12 and Devontae Dobbs at #17. Major positions of need for Michigan football. OL has been a disaster. And neither will be going to Michigan. That sucks. I don't buy into the rankings for OL's all that much, but I'd rather have two 5* in-state OL's go to Michigan than not, every single time.
-
Very pleased to have Logan Brown in the fold.
UW had 4 4* commits, but then the new ratings came out and they now have 2.
That's the stuff that happens to non-helmets.
-

Posted a perfect 4.0 GPA last semester and said right now he's just focused on that. The Yale offer makes sense. I said last year I was worried MSU was overcompensating for the character disaster of the 2016 class, but it turned out to be a good thing. If the staff thinks a 3* 4.0 GPA Ivy League acadmeoc type from Toledo is worth an offer, I'll defer to them now.
-
How come I can't find anything about Jace Goins?
IS it really Jase Bowen you're talking about?
https://247sports.com/player/jase-bowen-46037792
-
Ha, yes. Weird auto correct.
-

PSU only has 3 in-state offers out at this point.
-
Sooooo I see Illinois's name popping up a TON for some pretty well rated kids for 2019. CB's everywhere or making a lot of kids' top lists they tweet. What's up in Chambana?

Pay for play is an Illinois tradition...
Truth be told, Illinois has recruited fairly well (not OSU/PSU/UM/UNL, but mostly better than its division rivals), until recently.
Coaching has not been done fairly well to match.

hah, Huskers have 5 in-state offers

UW has 3 out, 2 of which are committed.

-
hah, Huskers have 5 in-state offers
It's a down year in PA talent wise, and PSU's approach (as I assume many other schools' approach) has changed with the new recruiting rules. PSU going heavy into Texas and Florida this year, as well as typical in the DMV.
-
and it's an up year in Nebraska, but I'd guess there are still 4 times as many legit D1 recruits in PA.
Huskers have offered all 5 in the state and have 3 commits
-
Nebraska has offered 261 prospects already in the class. The total leads the Big Ten. No Group of 5 program has offered more prospects than the Huskers. They rank seventh among Division I and Power 5 programs as of Wednesday.
School | Number of offers | Conference |
Tennessee | 336 | SEC |
Kentucky | 311 | SEC |
Ole Miss | 301 | SEC |
Syracuse | 292 | ACC |
Florida | 285 | SEC |
Louisville | 276 | ACC |
Nebraska | 261 | Big Ten |
Toledo | 249 | MAC |
Michigan | 241 | Big Ten |
Indiana | 240 | Big Ten |
Oregon | 233 | PAC-12 |

Illinois adds 5* QB Isaiah Williams to the commit list. Wow.
-
Juice is back!
-
Juice 2.0
-
Wow. That's big.
-
UW picked up a commitment from Marcus Graham out of North Carolina. Played QB, TB and WR in high school. Ted Gilmore and John Settle found him. Looks like a really good athlete who could play any number of positions.
UW has two All-Americans on its roster who were QB's in HS. TJ Edwards at ILB and David Edwards at RT.
https://247sports.com/Player/Marcus-Graham-46048982
I'm going sit back and watch his offer list grow.
-
MSU offered 3* WR Jace Goins from Toledo, who was committed to ND for baseball.
Committed to MSU today.
Had offers from all the Ivies also and said he wanted to decide before next season started because he wanted to focus on winning a state championship and being valedictorian (he's currently #6 in his class). I'll take all the 3* kids like that we can get.
-
It didn't take Thomas Grayson long at all to jump on a chance to play for the Nebraska Cornhuskers after visiting Lincoln for a Junior Day on Saturday.
Grayson announced his commitment on Saturday.
Everything moved relatively fast for Nebraska with Grayson after the Huskers offered the running back at the end of the month. He already planned to visit Lincoln, but an offer from Tennessee moved up Nebraska's timetable. The two sides had been talking for months, but the visit likely cemented things for both the Huskers and the running back.
Grayson said he was impressed by everything on campus and the vibe he felt while spending time in Lincoln. Additionally, he came away feeling good about the offense and how the running backs fit into things for the uptempo, spread scheme.
Nebraska's class now sits at four, as Grayson is the first commitment for the Huskers outside of the state and the first likely to play on the offensive side of the ball.

4 star athlete Ronnie Hillman commits to the Bucks out of New Jersey
-
Tennessee verbal 4* CB Te'Cory Couch of Hollywood, Florida flips to Michigan.
2019 recruiting efforts continue to start off strong. Won't be a big class, but should finish with lots of quality. Michigan in on a lot of type players this cycle. Heard that song and dance before though. They will need to have a big rebound season in 2018 to keep that momentum going or the 2019 class could fall apart like the 2018 did last NSD.
-
I'm amazed (or at least pleasantly surprised) by all the kids UW is after that have M, MSU, OSU and PSU offers. They might even win a few of them.
That was essentially unheard of in the past. They rarely even tried.
I was one of those people who were skeptical on Paul Chryst's recruiting. Not anymore.
-
Four star DE Noah Potter commits to the Bucks out of Mentor, OH
-
3* ILB Marcel Lewis picks MSU over UM. Iowa, Pitt and Kentucky were among his other offer.
Apparently he almost committed back in January, then UM offered and he backed off a bit. OSU, PSU and Florida poked around late but never offered. No clue if an offer from one of them would open things back up.
-
4 star RB/LB and name of the year candidate Steele Chambers commits to the Bucks out of Georgia
-
Michigan wasn't really recruiting Marcel Lewis that hard. Not sure he even had a real offer he could commit to. It's going to be a small class and they have other LB's higher on their board and they are stacked with LB's from their last 2 classes.
RB/LB prospect Steele Chambers out of Georgia to the Buckeyes was a huge blow, Michigan was in on him super early and were after him hard, he was a top guy on their board. He's also a big-time baseball prospect.

Bryson Shaw flips from UW to Ohio State. Congrats on getting a 3* away from Paul Chryst and Jimmy Leonhard.
F you, Urban. F. You. You're gonna bury this kid and he'll transfer.
*******************************************************************
Shaw was recruited by assistant coaches Jim Leonhard (https://247sports.com/Player/Jim-Leonhard-76177) and Mickey Turner (https://247sports.com/Player/Mickey-Turner-40094). Head coach Paul Chryst (https://247sports.com/Coach/Paul-Chryst-138) was also present to take Shaw's commitment.
"I was in coach Chryst's office when I told him and he got really pumped," said Shaw. "He got up and gave me a hug. We were all pumped. It was a great feeling."
Shaw can play either safety position in Wisconsin's 3-4 defense.
"I see myself fitting in very well," he said. "My style of play is tough and fast. I can come up and help in the run game and have the speed to cover the field.
"I also see myself making an impact in the return game. I will do whatever it takes to help the team win a national championship."
Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Penn State were also expressing interest in Shaw. The Buckeyes may have been ready to offer and invited Shaw to Columbus for what they called "Bryson Shaw (https://247sports.com/Player/Bryson-Shaw-46048331) Day."
Even if new offers arise, the nation's No. 73 ranked safety said his recruitment has come to an end.
"It's over," he said. "I know that Wisconsin is the place for me. It feels right."
F. You, Urban.

Is that you mcwterps?
-
Very funny. Completely different though. This was not some 4-5* kid. He's a kid that UW's staff sniffed out early and evaluated him - apparently very well.
I don't like it that the UW staff also serves as talent evaluators for helmets schools.
-
4 star LB Cade Stover announces for the Bucks out of Lexington OH.
-
3* DE Adam Berghorst commits to MSU. Had an ND football offer, and a UM baseball offer, but MSU offered him in both. Dude is 6'7" and 260, so I almost look more forward to seeing what he looks like on a baseball diamond.
-
Look for an OSU offer soon.
-
Definitely a "flip" candidate, with M and O trying to get him to make a visit, but for now, this kid is a Badger and plans an early enrollment.
I'm thinking this kid is the next flip from UW.
-

Probably has a pretty big strike zone.

Not that I expect this to make you feel better, but he kid did say he needed to get closer to home due to some personal family issues that arose.

5 Star WR Garrett Wilson out of Texas commits to OSU. First straight up battle between Herman and Meyer.
-
5 Star WR Garrett Wilson out of Texas commits to OSU. First straight up battle between Herman and Meyer.
Didn't hurt that he was originally from Dublin
-
Not that I expect this to make you feel better, but he kid did say he needed to get closer to home due to some personal family issues that arose.
Maryland would be close to his Maryland home. That story doesn't pass the smell test - just be honest. He committed to UW, and then he got the OSU offer. OSU never gave up, just like with QB Chase Wolf last year, except Wolf didn't succumb.
End of story.
I get the feeling UW knew this was coming, and took the transfer from Houston (as a PWO) to backfill this opening. He will have 3 years after sitting out 2018. They will still be looking to add one more safety prospect this class, from what I gather.
-
Maryland and Ohio are only separated by about a 30 mile stretch of WV.
-
The kid ain't from Selbysport, and it's actually about a 100 mile split...
It's a difference of 1 hour on a plane from Madison vs. Columbus. Smell test.
-
So you believe that you have been given the "It's not you, it's me" routine?
-
I just don't buy the "closer to family" thing. OSU is not close to his family in the grand scheme of what that is supposed to mean. If that was truly the case, go play at Maryland, right?
The kid got flipped - he changed his mind. It happens. It's OSU and Meyer is relentless. I get that. Just don't put BS excuses out there.
-
Yeah, when you dump the baton twirler for the head cheerleader, it's tough to let her down easy.
She generally sees right through the gentlemanly facade, but you sorta have to take the high road and say the right things anyway.
-
Yes, and on that note, my first post on the subject was harsh - to the kid. He's not gonna ride the pine at OSU. This kid is gonna be a great player. Jimmy Leonhard knows a thing or two about safeties. He'll be on the field.
That said, F you Urban Meyer. :96:

Ed Zachery, things could be much worse. When Urban is flipping your recruits, at least you are recruiting the right kids. When he's not sniffing around, you're in trouble.
-
On the bright side, the baton twirler is still a pretty good catch for most of the guys in the school.
-
I'm not gonna take that as a compliment to UW.
-
She is also a little tough to console when the same gal keeps steeling all of her boyfriends.
-
Well, like I said, I hope this kid works out with the flip.
I think he will, unlike the rest of them...
-
there is time to flip back

Like I said, I didn’t think it would make you feel better. And for the record, I never said I believed Shaw when I read those quotes. ( he said it several times).
The important part of the message is HE said it, not anyone from Ohio State.
And I understand the “f you Urban”. He operates in a world where every single recruit he has committed is being recruited away from him right up until they sign..that’s how you lose two 5 stars within a week of signing day. Truly a case of don’t hate the player—hate the game.

UM adds 3* OT Karsen Barnhart from MI. There was some oddness with his recruitment when he apparently tried to commit a week ago, but seems like that is all cleared up. Really athletic, certainly enough to stick at tackle, but he looks more like a guard. Will be interesting to see where he sticks.

OSU offered MSU's 2019 QB commit, Dwan Mathis
-
I hope that means they know they are getting Mertz to flip from UW. They've been on him like stink on shit.
-
Mathis makes more sense than Mertz for OSU imo.
I don't know why Urbz even goes after the pocket passers. His best successes at the QB position have been guys that are better runners than passers.
Josh Harris, Alex Smith, Tim Tebow, JT Barrett.

just to keep them from signing with his competitors

Nebraska added another thoroughbred to its stable of running backs, as Bergen Catholic four-star Rahmir Johnson announced on Saturday his commitment to the Cornhuskers.
The commitment came to Nebraska over Boston College, Ole Miss and Rutgers, the other teams that rounded out his top. Johnson holds 15 offers overall.
The 5-foot-10, 173-pound running back, who committed earlier in the week, told friends and family his plans on Saturday, and stated to 247Sports the opportunity to help Nebraska rise again in college football was too great.

When is it time to take the "senseless" out of the title of this topic? I mean, it's on full swing. Maybe we need a senseless 2020 recruiting thread.
I can't believe I just typed 2020.

he's been getting rave reviews on the recent camp circuits that just started. Sounding like he could stick at tackle.
State of MI is loaded with OL this class. It's crazy. Logan Brown, Devontae Dobbs, Anthony Bradford, Karsen Barnhart, and Spencer Brown are all P5 quality OL recruits. Not sure the state has ever had 5 in one year like that.
-
Definitely a "flip" candidate, with M and O trying to get him to make a visit, but for now, this kid is a Badger and plans an early enrollment.
De-committed.

Bradford just committed to LSU. Is he from out of state? I didn't hear a peep about UM or MSU even being involved, which feels odd for an in state 4* recruit. McCall, you always heard major, major, major academic red flags, such that he may never play, so that one made sense.
-

cat got yer tongue?
He was holding out for better offers, and decided he'd finally "commit" rather than lose his spot. Those other offers are coming now, as I suspected they would after word got out about him, and they are closer to home.
Staff had not stopped recruiting the WR position, so that's the good news.
-
Groulx has been eager to return to Madison to give head coach Paul Chryst his pledge.
On Saturday, he finally got the chance.
this just sounded like BS to me
-
I think much of what you read/find on the recruiting sites can be described that way.
The most reliable UW person was on Scout, and he didn't survive the transition. Jesse Temple on Land of 10 is about the best available now for UW, but he's not just on recruiting.
-
A new commit for UW.
https://247sports.com/player/keeanu-benton-46055051
Keeanu Benton out of Janesville, WI. Unrated. 6-4, 290. Iowa offer.
Let the helmets come rolling in. Notre Dame is gonna be pissed. They were just up that way trying to flip 3* UW TB commit Julius Davis. Now they gotta turn around and go back.
-
Penn State received 4 commitments in 4 days. Starting Friday with Devyn Ford 4* RB from VA. A Sunday surprise from Marquis Wilson 4* CB out of CT. Continued the #VA2PA trend with 5* LB Brandon Smith Monday, followed shortly there after by 4* Ath Tyler Rudolph also from CT.
Not a bad extended weekend.
-
MSU gets 3* ILB Luke Fulton from Youngstown. Big get, he had just said last week that MSU, Wisconsin and Northwestern were his leaders, but that he wanted his mom to take an MSU visit this week.
Guess they sold mom.
Any Ohio kid that doesn't yet have an OSU offer yet though is iffy at best, in the event they ever come poking around.
-
NOW is when they come poking around.
"So, we can flip you, right?"
- Urban Meyer
-
does Urban flip as many kids committed to schools in other conferences?
or does he concentrate on taking kids from Big Ten programs?
to make sure they have to work harder and possibly get less
-
I really only know about the kids he's flipped from UW, but I know he's struck in Maryland too, for Haskins.
UW flips kids too, like Jonathon Taylor from Rutgers and Hornibrook from Pitt (when PC left there).
But sure seems like OSU likes to sniff out UW kids.
-
An MSU poster on another board pointed out how in the last week there have been not one, but two articles written about MSU recruits who are "sticking with MSU in spite of picking up an offer from School X." First it's the QB who got an OSU offer, then an OT who subsequently picked up LSU, Florida and Michigan offers. When was the last time you read Michigan/Notre Dame/Texas recruit (schools with less recent success) sticking with their commitment in spite of picking up offer from MSU/Wisconsin/Washington, etc...?
Note that the one OT has fallen 400 spots in the 247 rankings since committing to MSU, despite picking up those UM, LSU and Florida offers in the meantime. While the in state OT who did commit to UM during that period, who was MSU's Plan B, has shot up the rankings above him.
-
ND is the ass burn for UW now.
They are all over QB Graham Mertz, TB Julius Davis and OL Joe Tippman. I'm talking relentless.
Why any kid would choose to be yelled at by Brian Kelly every day is beyond me.
-

I doubt they'll have to deal with him for 4 years
-
That would need to start with Michigan kicking his ass. Seriously though. Had Kelly developed a QB in his time as a coach? I'm asking honestly. Seems to me he gets good talent and squanders it.
-
I think DeShone Kizer is pretty good. Honestly, I think the Browns screwed up by not giving him another year.
-
3* OG Nick Samac from Mentor, OH commits to MSU over IU, BC, Duke and Vandy
-
Interesting tweet from a kid who UW had targeted for some time now:

Frost likes winning

there's no time to waste in eliminating losses

The Huskers continue to make recruiting noise in early June with the announced commitment on Wednesday of linebacker Jackson Hannah, who told Husker247 he will play inside linebacker at Nebraska.
"Everything just clicked ... The academics is there, the football is there, the conference is there. I just felt at home. It's something I really can't describe," Hannah said shortly after breaking the news.
The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Hannah comes from Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, and picked NU over a reported offer list that included Ole Miss, Arkansas, Florida, Oregon, South Carolina, Wisconsin, LSU, Cal, Duke, Mississippi State, Memphis, North Carolina, Louisville, Vanderbilt and Purdue.

The academics is there
I'm sure they is.

MSU adds 3* OT Damon Kaylor from Indiana over Virginia, Vandy, IU and BC. Wisconsin had been poking around but hadn't offered. I like the caliber of academic schools looking at him, and it's nice to get him in the fold as the #2 OT in the class before UW decided they wanted to be more involved.
-
UW is waiting on a kid from Minnesota, and possibly a kid from Illinois. There are also a few they have in the pipeline from Wisconsin (duh).
They have Brown and Tippman on board now. Just looking to add to those at this point. The STARZ don't matter with UW though.
If they like a kid they will take him, and turn him into a 1st round pick.

with a little trench training

UW picked up Dean Engram this morning - son of Bobby Engram.
Final three were VT, PSU and UW. I don't think PSU really wanted him though.
Probably gonna be a corner in Madison.

Nebraska added another commitment on Friday as athlete Ronald Thompkins announced his verbal pledge to the Huskers. The Grayson (Ga.) High athlete made the announcement on Twitter. He told Husker247 afterwards he just felt the timing was right for a commitment.
"I just wanted to do it today (Friday)," he said. "There was no specific reason. I've never been to Nebraska. I have a lot of trust in people that have been up there and a lot of them are telling me how it is up there, and that's pretty much why I decided I could go ahead and make the commitment."
Thompkins was previously a Florida State commitment, but he stepped back from the Seminoles in September, following a knee injury he sustained during the season.
Grayson's recruiting coordinator, Kenyatta Watson, said Thompkins is close to 100 percent at this time, and that he just ran a 4.5 40-yard dash at Alabama the week prior to the commitment.
The four-star athlete had offers from 20 schools at the time of his commitment. Alabama and USC, each of whom had offered, reached out earlier this week, but Thompkins was already set on his decision. Both Thompkins and Watson said the recruit is finished with other schools and is focused on Nebraska.
Nebraska now holds nine commitments, with three of them slated to be involved at the running back position. Thompkins joins Thomas Grayson and Rahmir Johnson, both of whom committed in the spring.
-
The Badgers added another commit over the weekend.
Gio Paez is out of North Carolina and will play DT for UW.
-
Semar Melvin, a CB out of St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, has committed to be a Badger.
I love Aquinas kids. Disciplined and coachable. They usually work out well too.
-
3* OG Nick Samac from Mentor, OH commits to MSU over IU, BC, Duke and Vandy
Funny thing, now OSU offers.
Apparently he told Urban thanks, but no thanks, but that's a long time to have all the locals in your ear, and he has two HS teammates committed to OSU already.

Purdue has picked up a bunch of recruits in the past week to the point where they now have 11 commitments and have, for the moment, broken into a few top 25 class rankings for 2019. While I am sure that they will eventually be knocked out of the top 25 as other schools start to reel in the 5 star guys, the quality of recruits has certainly picked up over Hazell's years as Brohm has already picked up 2 or 3 (depending on the ranking service) 4* players and the others are mostly in the solid 3* range. I think Hazell pulled in 2 four star players over his entire tenure.
I suspect the final rankings will probably end up somewhere in the 40's or 50's, but considering we were stuck in the 70's and 80's before, I'll take any improvement we can get at this point.
-
Actually, a correction, Purdue has now picked up 15 recruits. Was 14 this morning but just got another pick-up from Nyles Beverly.
Only a 3 star recruit, but the other thing I've been noticing is that many of the recruits we are getting have decent offer lists. Nyles had offers from Michigan, Minnesota, Pitt, Rutgers, Vandy, Kentucky, and Iowa State. Under Hazell, most of the guys we got had nothing but MAC schools listed as their other offers, so that in itself should also be seen as progress.
-
Purdue now sitting 6th in conference and 23rd nationally according to 247.
Looking over the list, what strikes me is that while I think there are definitely a number of teams below Purdue that I expect will jump us as we get farther along, it's a LOT fewer than I thought.
In conference I think Purdue might pass Minnesota, but I think there's a good chance MSU and Nebraska will leap Purdue as their classes start to fill up. But I don't really see anyone else below us that's recruiting at an "average quality of recruit" that significantly exceeds Purdue. And there's still a lot of time for Purdue to improve, especially if Purdue shows continued progress this year on the field.
-
I like what I'm seeing in West LayFlat. Of course, Purdue can pass Minnesota.
Purdue could pass Minnesota with a clown coaching it.. oh.. wait.. That's the Minnesota coach.
-
Purdue now up to 18th nationally and 3rd in the B1G!
Granted, now we're starting to get into a "class size" boost. We have 17 commits, which is second-most of any team in the conference right now.
3rd: Purdue - 17 commits - 247 average of 84.95
Below Purdue in the conference:
5th: Wisconsin - 12 commits - 87.88
6th: Penn State - 9 commits - 91.81
8th: MSU - 10 commits - 87.99
11th: Nebraska - 9 commits - 87.38
I think that if those teams fill out their classes with players even remotely near the same quality as those they have on their commit list, they'll all jump up the rankings quickly and pass Purdue unless their classes remain very small.
-
Not sure MSU is aware at how you run a pipeline. They seemed to have one set up at Belleville, and the way you maintain that is to continue to take kids you feel borderline about, to land the home runs like Dobbs. They slow played DE Jalen Hunt, Iowa came in with an offer, and seemed to really like him, and he committed. Good for him.

Four star QB Dwan Mathis flips from MSU to OSU

How do you pronounce Dwan?

Four star QB Dwan Mathis flips from MSU to OSU
No surprise. Impressed Dantonio has done has much as he has with one hand tied behind his back. Oh well.
-
Nebraska has a big need along the offensive line in its 2019 class and they got some help in that area as Matthew Anderson announced his commitment to the Huskers.
The 6-foot-7, 250-pound offensive tackle announced his decision via Twitter on Friday afternoon and becomes the 10th known commit for Nebraska's 2019 recruiting class.
-
CUM couldn't flip Mertz, but he did get Dwan Mathis to flip. Unfortunately, MSU is the victim this time around.

I was poking around looking into UW's class for 2019 and I see the following:
They are done at RB, TE, QB and WR.
They still want to take another OT and the top target has been, and still is, Bryce Benhart out of Minnesota.
They need linebackers and have zeroed in on a couple of them. Highly doubtful they get the kid out Nebraska, I'm thinking they will go with Spencer Lytle out of California to the end. There have been a few PWO offers lately for in-state kids.
They need defensive backs (especially safety) and defensive linemen too. More on that later.
-
I would think the next logical QB target would be in state Sam Johnson, who just committed to BC last month. He's a 3/4*, more traditional pocket passer.
MSU had been in on Mathis for so long, I'm not even sure if they've been kicking the tires on other QBs. After Johnson it gets murky in a hurry.
On the flip side, a lot of buzz that Devontae Dobbs, who might be the top OT in the nation, might commit to MSU very soon. Who knows.

The chatter here amped up way more quickly than I expected. Losing Mathis sucks, but that's certainly a fine Option B. If MSU had pursued him as Option A from the start, I don't think anyone would have batted an eye.
-
Wow, and Dobbs commits to MSU. Funny how the recruiting gods work.
I think he might be the highest rated MSU recruit in the 247 era.

DE Michael Fletcher and WR Tre Mosley both announcing on Friday. With Dobbs (MSU) and Smith (UM) coming off the board in the past week, Fletcher and Mosley are probably the #1 and #4 uncommitted players on the board in the state.
Mosley himself claims to have grown up a huge UM fan, and while he has an offer, it seems pretty clearly uncommitable. So did that change, or is he tired of them slow playing him? He took officials in recent weeks to Missouri and Minnesota, but it seems like anything but UM or MSU would be a shock, and unless something has changed with that UM offer, it likely leaves only MSU. The question is whether that sticks if UM comes around on him.
Fletcher is a guy who seems primed to shoot up the rankings, with offers coming in from Alabama and Georgia. Georgia has been on him a while, and he visited down there, but like Mosley it seems like UM and MSU are his leaders. The difference is there his UM offer is certainly commitable, and while going out of state would be a slight surprise, it certainly wouldn't be the shock that Mosley is.
Beyond those, LB Lance Dixon and RB Jaren Manham are the only big-ish targets left in the state. Dixon seems destined for PSU. Mangham is anyone's guess. Seemed like an MSU commit was only a matter of time, but he lived in Texas as a small child (I think his mom played basketball or track or something at Texas A&M), and while Alabama, FSU and Florida offers didn't seem to move the needle for him, he seems quite enamored with the Texas schools. My guess is MSU is still probably the leader, but barely, but the biggest threats would be Texas or Texas A&M.

Dobbs unloads on other schools. I love this stuff, because much of the news we get out of recruiting is third hand gossip and not much primary sourcing. Says OSU coaches lied to him about playing time, USC coaches kept calling him Big Daddy, and UM coaches were arrogant robots.
-
On a similar note, I read a story about a recent UW commit from NW Wisconsin. He went for a visit to Minnie, which was very close to home. He came out of it and said there was no way he could play for the coach up there. I'll try to dig it up.
-
3* WR Alante Brown from Chicago commits to MSU over Missouri and Minnesota. Is a HS QB, but MSU seems to like that type. He's been clocked sub 4.4, so he's an absolute burner, but is a major project at the position.

Lol. Yes, apparently the OSU coaches telling him he had a shot a playing time as a freshmen, was a lie to him.
I guess being a 5 star lineman from Michigan is nothing like the last 4 star lineman they got from Michigan, Michael Jordan, who has started every game since his freshmen year and will likely choose the NFL next year...
Ironically, OSU recruits ( the ones they get and don’t get) universally say they are never promised playing time, just an opportunity to earn it.

A bunch of CBs on Mangham flipping surprisingly to Colorado. He put out an ultimatum that you had to take his brother with him, and I'm guessing that took a lot of people out of the running. I honestly thought he was joking, but some reports saying he wasn't.

Mosley to MSU, filling up the class pretty quickly this week on the heels of the Mathis news last weekend. I think 6 recruits now in the past 72 hours, with Fletcher announcing in about 45 minutes. Forgot Oregon had offered Mosley as well.
-
That UM fan meme of MSU being 10th in the Big Ten in recruiting last Sunday didn't age particularly well. Up to #3 in the Big Ten and #19 nationally. Will move up to #17 if Fletcher commits.

Bama and Tennessee have now offered 3* MSU RB commit Jordan Huff from GA, and Georgia sounds likely to follow.
My guess he is neither an MSU commit or 3* for much longer
And now he ain't. Likely SEC or Louisville bound
-
The kid visited Louisville last month, correct?
That's a fallback "school" for a lot of kids.
-
MSU needs some DBs. Fortunately they took Gervin's commitment last year even though he was the 3rd CB, when they had planned on only taking 2, because with Hunt (who was recruited to MSU as a safety, not a RB), this class as of now has one corner and no safeties.
I can't blame a kid for wanting to stay closer to home, and I also wonder if Louisville and Georgia Tech are recruiting him as a RB.
Also, he had a 1300 SAT, so it isn't an academic thing
-
If he's that smart he shouldn't bother with Louisville.

3* DE Darius Robinson, who was presumed to be a heavy MSU lean, had his friend post a video showing him dunking, and introcuing him as an MSU commit?

That is the jibberish part of the thread.

Nebraska added to its commitment list on Thursday morning when the Huskers landed the verbal from defensive tackle Tony Fair, a junior college defender from Pima Community College in Arizona, who announced his decision on Twitter.
Fair became the 12th commitment of Nebraska’s class, the second defensive lineman and the first outright nose tackle. He’s also the second junior college commitment, joining Desmond Bland, an offensive lineman from Arizona Western.
Nebraska won the commitment over Indiana, substantial because the Hoosiers play in Fair’s home state, as he's from South Bend, Ind., and actually spent some time at Indiana State before resurfacing with Pima Community College.
The defensive tackle is a NJCAA All-American coming off a strong season where he compiled an impressive 98 tackles from the middle of the defensive line, as a 6-foot-3, 330-pound nose tackle.

not finding the Husker off-season thread so putting this here................
HuskerOnline.com confirmed that Central Florida starting safety Tre Neal will follow his former head coach Scott Frost to NU as a graduate transfer.
A source with knowledge of the situation has confirmed to HuskerOnline Neal has been granted his release from UCF, and Nebraska is not restricted as one of his options. Neal also later confirmed to HOL his transfer to Nebraska is a “done deal.”
“(Frost) built something special at UCF, and I was lucky enough to be apart of that,” Neal told HuskerOnline.com. “I love UCF, it is in good hands right now and is a top program in the country and needs to be treated as such. But I chose Frost because he instilled a confidence in the game I thought I lost. And I want to help him rebuild what he loves back in Lincoln.”
Neal is set to graduate from UCF at the end of this month, and from there he will be admitted into graduate school at NU and be immediately eligible for the 2018 season.
The Atlanta native was fourth on UCF's team last year with 68 total tackles, 41 of which were solo stops. Neal also added three interceptions and was UCF's second-leading tackler returning for the 2018 season
The 6-foot-1, 215 pound Neal started all 13 games for the Knights in 2017 and saw action in 38 games the last three seasons, making 18 career starts.
During the 2017 season, Neal intercepted a pass in double-overtime against Memphis, that sealed the AAC title for UCF, and clinched a birth in the Peach Bowl.
In UCF's Peach Bowl win over Auburn, Neal recovered a fumble and returned it 36 yards to go along with seven tackles and one pass break-up.
Neal becomes the second UCF players to follow Frost to Lincoln. Former Wahoo (Neb.) Bishop Neumann quarterback Noah Vedral also followed Frost Nebraska as a walk-on but was put on scholarship in May after being granted his release by Central Florida.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers received a big recruiting win on Saturday night when Omaha Burke linebacker Nick Henrich announced his commitment, and his intention of staying in-state.
Announcing via social media, Henrich had this to say about his decision:
"Playing college football has been a dream of mine ever since I could remember," he wrote. "Thanks to all the schools who gave me the opportunity to chase that dream. I am very excited to say I am a 1,000 percent committed to the University of Nebraska."
Henrich is a Top247 linebacker, who chose the Huskers over Iowa, Notre Dame and Wisconsin. He most recently visited Nebraska in June, following an official visit to Madison to see the Badgers.
Nebraska assistant Barrett Ruud was Henrich's primary recruiter. The former in-state linebacker, and then Nebraska star and NFL linebacker, is in his first season as a full-time assistant coach.
The Huskers were far from the favorites to land Henrich, and it wasn't until Nebraska head coach Scott Frost stopped in at Omaha Burke that the linebacker truly began to consider the school down the road a real option. At that point Ruud and Frost began to tag-team the recruitment, working hard on Henrich, and making sure the linebacker was constantly surrounded by the staff whenever he visited Lincoln.
Henrich was often thought of as Iowa's to lose because of family connections at the school, being the son of a former Iowa tennis player. There were also crystal ball projections for Minnesota, Notre Dame and Wisconsin throughout the process. Henrich took a visit to Minnesota earlier in the cycle and a visit to Notre Dame during the spring. At which point the Irish were thought to be the leaders.
The commitment is Nebraska's first inside the Top247, and the third four-star of the class, as Henrich joins Luke McCaffrey and Desmond Bland with that distinction. He's Nebraska's fourth in-state commitment in the 2019 class, joining Garrett Nelson, Ethan Piper and Garrett Snodgrass.
Henrich is ranked the No. 9 inside linebacker, and the No. 219 player in the country, as well as the No. 1 player in Nebraska by 247Sports Composite.

4* DE Stephen Herron, the 2nd highest rated player in UM's class, flipped to Stanford.
sucks to lose a 4*, but this kid was lying for months about how firm his commitment was to Michigan. Combine that with the fact that he stunk it up at the opening and his rankings are in free fall- he started out as a top 30 player and a 5* in the 247Composite- he's slid to #86 in the composite and all the way to #156 in 247's own rankings- I say good-riddance and goodbye. His rankings slide isn't over yet either. He'll continue to fall. Recent DE commit David Ojabo is bigger, stronger, faster, has a better body/build for the position- and he'll probably wind up flying up the rankings with a strong SR year. He's very similar to Jayson Oweh and Eyabi Anoma in that he's originally from Africa and his football experience is limited. Oweh wound up flying up to #76 in the composite and Anoma wound up flying up to #4. Ojabo is from the same HS as Oweh actually, and the "analysts" who've seen them both say Ojabo has more upside- that he's bigger, longer, leaner, stronger, and more athletic than Oweh.

sucks to lose a 4*, but this kid was lying for months about how firm his commitment was to Michigan. Is it possible he got meritocracy'd?
-
A bunch of CBs on Mangham flipping surprisingly to Colorado. He put out an ultimatum that you had to take his brother with him, and I'm guessing that took a lot of people out of the running. I honestly thought he was joking, but some reports saying he wasn't.
Colorado it is.
He aware Bill McCartney's daughter is like 50 now?
-
I never blame a kid for taking a Stanford offer. Good football and great degree.
Jim Harbaugh will tell you that.
Absolutely.
-
Is it possible he got meritocracy'd?
I don't think so. They wouldn't have booted him at this point in time. He just really wanted a degree from Stanford. Can't blame him.
Now if Zach Harrison called up Jim and said hey I wanna come to Michigan, someone would've definitely gotten the boot from Jim IMO.
-
The top OU insider over at 247Sports just put in a crystal ball for Michigan for 5* Safety Daxton Hill and said Hill has essentially dropped Oklahoma. Hill is the #1 safety, #1 player in the state of Oklahoma, and the #10 player overall in the 247Composite. He is the younger brother of Oklahoma State RB Justice Hill. Daxton Hill's crystal balls were like 80%+ in favor of Oklahoma. Couple more have started to turn to Michigan after.
Sounds like he's basically down to Alabama and Michigan, and Michigan might actually have the lead there. Would be huge. Hill checked in at 6'0.5" and 187 at the opening and he ripped off the fastest 40 time there with a 4.37.
-
"Michigan is a good school and I got a good education there, but the athletic department has ways to get borderline guys in, and when they're in, they steer them to courses in sports communications. They're adulated when they're playing, but when they get out, the people who adulated them won't hire them."

wish he was the RB coach at Michigan. He'd kill it IMO.

-
He'd be great in that role, but is he on speaking terms with the head honcho?
doubt it. probably a moot point anyways, because Jim ain't firing his son Jay. The young Harbaugh has actually hit it out of the park recruiting RB's these last two classes. Michael Barrett and Hassan Haskins were lowly 3*'s but both of them have been getting lot of buzz in the insider circles as two incoming freshman who have really impressed early. Haskins might just be the most physically impressive back on the team and Barrett is a lock to play as a true frosh as a RB/wildcat QB/reverse man/slot ninja.
And then in the 2019 class he's landed arguably the top RB duo in the country in 4* Zach Charbornnet (6'2, 210) out of California & Eric Gray (5'10, 190) out of Tennessee. Charbonnet just flew up to the #4 RB and #40 player overall in the latest 247 rankings and Gray did as well after he impressed at the opening- he jumped up to #1 All-Purpose back and #86 player overall. Charbonnet is a guy that could wind up as a 5* when it's all said and done imo.

Purdue picked up two 4 star recruits yesterday. TJ Sheffield (who committed to ND and then there was some shenanigans that ended up with ND pulling the offer) is a 4 star WR and Steven Faucheux is a four star DT out of Ohio. There are still a few spots left and Purdue is still high on some other four star players (David Bell, JJ Weaver, Wandale Robinson, Milton Wright).
If they can manage to pull in one or two of those four, it is conceivable Purdue could finish the year with a top 25 class.
-
I think we all thought Brohm was a great hire, but I don't think anyone could have predicted how quickly he'd turn it around on the recruiting trail.
-
#4 player overall, #3 DE, 5* DE Zach Harrison of Ohio delays his commitment announcement indefinitely. Harrison was scheduled to announce his commitment in 2 weeks on his bday on August 14. He has since canceled that as he said he's not sure where he wants to go and he won't make any commitment until he is 100% sure where he wants to go.
Probably not the best news for Ohio State, and it keeps the door open for Michigan and PSU to gain ground.
-

It was amazing to me how much more media love PJ Barnum got than Brohm.
Cal and Purdue won that hiring season for sure. Purdue probably more than Cal.
-
This puts Purdue at four or five 4* recruits (depending on service). One of those may be upgraded to a 5* this fall. Brohm is killing it.
And it's almost August! Purdue opens up -3.5 against Northwestern 8/30/18.

Not even Purdue fans. Not even with how he turned around the program in one year. The fact that we've not only got a program that has excitement, buzz, but is actually recruiting at a level that Tiller never dreamed of this quickly is astounding.

George Karlaftis is currently according to 247 consensus ranks a 4* and the 76th-ranked player in the country. 247 themselves, however, rank him 5* and the 9th-best player (https://247sports.com/player/george-karlaftis-45572561) in the entire nation.
And it doesn't look like he's got any chance of flipping. He's actively recruiting other players to join him in West Lafayette.
-
MSU adds 3* J.D. Duplain from OH.
All of the services list him as an OG, and he would be MSU's 5 OL recruit this cycle. But some talk that MSU likes him more as a DT.
Had offers from Maryland, Pitt, Indiana, Kentucky, but just took a visit to Clemson a couple weeks back, and there were rumors an offer was coming soon from there. Wonder if a commitment now is a result of hearing Clemson wasn't offering, and you wonder what happens if that offer comes at a later date.

Steve Witflong who is one of the more plugged in recruiting guys over at 247 says Karlaftis is rock solid to Purdue and only way he'd change that is if Brohm were to leave- then he'd open it up and look at Michigan and USC.

Flipped to Georgia Tech officially. Smart kid, from Georgia, never going to question the motivation of a kid changing his mind and realizing moving to Michigan is a long way away as an 18 year old.

Holy crap UNL. I thought The Madman was the king of offers.

I can't even imagine how shitty for Purdue if Tennessee had succeeded in stealing him after one year.

yup, 50 something new faces on the roster this fall
searching high and low to find players for the new staff
-
If your program is recruiting well, your opposing fans claim you must be cheating.
It would be interesting to see the percentage of "5 star recruits" who really amount to something in CFB. My GUESS is 3 out of 4?
Not counting injuries and academics, though perhaps that should count.
I've seen correlations between stars and who gets drafted down the line and it is a decent correlation.
Of course, we know any time a kid gets an offer from a Bama or Ohio State they suddenly gain a star, or so it seems.
-
I saw the note above about an 18 year old kid wanting to stay nearer home. I can relate. When I chatted with a couple professors about where to go to grad school they cited places like Wisconsin and UCal and my eyes sort of glazed over.
I had never been on an airplane (until 1980 in fact). I was not sure Wisconsin really existed as a place and I imagined it was ice bound 9 months out of the year and merely cold the other 3. I was pretty sure California was a figment of Hollywood movies and did not exist. I had been to Texas and Oklahoma once as a kid, and as far north as Kentucky, again, once. I was 20 at the time and my views were very parochial. So, being closer to home is a comfort level in terms of culture and weather and family etc.
I know I wanted to provide more travel opportunities for my own kids and they've been all over the place (one place I wish he had never gone of course, that has been 13 years now as of 8/3).
And now my two kids live in Columbus, OH. One may be moving to Texas soon, not sure.

UW picked up a commit from one of the top players on its board on Saturday in LB Spencer Lytle from California.
https://247sports.com/college/wisconsin/Article/Wisconsin-Football-Recruiting-Three-Star-Linebacker-Spencer-Lytle-Commits-to-Wisconsin-Badgers-Over-Clemson-Tigers-120377600/
The three-star linebacker was down to Clemson and Wisconsin. He also held offers from Notre Dame, UCLA, Auburn, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Oregon, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Arizona, California, Louisville, and Colorado to name a few.
-
2019 Cherry Creek (Colo.) offensive lineman Michael Lynn had his commitment typed up and ready to go for a few weeks before he dropped it on Twitter on Sunday evening, announcing his commitment to Nebraska.
Lynn became the 15th commitment in Nebraska's 2019 recruiting class, and the lineman is the third at his position group to commit to Nebraska. Lynn announced his commitment on Twitter. The lineman thanked coaches and friends for helping guide him on the path that led him to college football.
The 6-foot-7, 300-pound offensive lineman plays for Cherry Creek in suburban Denver. Lynn is the No. 71 offensive tackle in the country by 247Sports Composite and carries a three-star ranking overall.
Lynn chose Nebraska over Arizona, Arizona State, Oklahoma State, Utah and Washington State among others, and visited Nebraska unofficially for the Huskers' spring game in April.
-
North Gwinnett defensive back Quinton Newsome became the latest to jump on board with Nebraska, committing to the Huskers on Monday afternoon.
Newsome is the first defensive back commitment of the 2019 class. The Huskers are likely going to take four commitments for the class, and Newsome’s versatility makes him a strong starting point as the coaches look to add on more.
At 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, Newsome could play anywhere in the secondary for the Huskers, something Travis Fisher has talked about a lot going forward. The Nebraska assistant said he always tells guys as he recruits them that he wants them to have the ability to play cornerback or safety, which gives more depth overall for the defense.
Newsome, a consensus three-star, chose the Huskers over Auburn and Georgia, as well 17 other schools.
-
Michigan picks up a commitment from WR Quintel Kent of OH. He's a 3* barely, and the #1,648th ranked player overall in the 247composite. He had no other P5 offers and he plays at St. Ed's- a powerhouse school that has been scouted by every P5 staff in the country.
Seems like a huge reach at this stage. Could've waited. They should've been pushing for a commit from a different 3* WR out of Ohio- Trevon Raphael. He's only played 1 year of HS football but he's pushing 6'4, 180 and is an athletic freak.
-
Michigan's 2019 recruiting continues to be a little head scratching.
Michigan gets a commit from 3* in-state DE prospect Tyrece Woods from Belleville HS. Woods is listed at 6'2, 255 lbs and he said he's being recruited as a defensive tackle or strong side end. He is the #2,305 ranked player in the 247Composite. Michigan beat Air Force and Cincinnati for his services. He literally didn't have one other P5 offer. He earned his offer last month at Michigan's camp but says he held off on committing right away.
It's a bit of a head scratcher because it's still pretty early and they didn't have to take him right now. Could've let him commit to Air Force or Cincinnati and then poached him later. Could just be a ploy to get into Belleville, a high school that's been producing highly rated prospects lately and a high school that Michigan has been pretty much shut out of for said highly rated prospects.
-
I love camp offers. That means the coaches liked what they saw. Any DL that Brown likes is OK in my book.

3* RB Demetrius Mauney decommits from Purdue, citing family health issues and wanting to remain closer to home (he's from NC).
Still a couple higher-rated RBs listed as "warm" interest for Purdue on 247, though. Purdue has one RB ranked a little lower than Mauney already committed, but this is expected to be at least a 2-RB class, so the coaches will certainly be looking to swing for some of those players with this news.
-
I love camp offers. That means the coaches liked what they saw. Any DL that Brown likes is OK in my book.
I agree with this pragmatically. That if a camper suddenly becomes a "Plan A" recruit, fans should be glad to get him. However in those years when your non-camp recruiting is going poorly, it must be theoretically possible to dig deeper than you otherwise should into camp recruits. As fans, it's hard to differentiate those cases. The heuristics might be: (1) unusually bad recruiting year, (2) unusual excess of camp commits.
Separate from that but perhaps also a bad heuristic: waiting to offer a camper only if the Plan A's and B's go elsewhere.
-
Of course, we know any time a kid gets an offer from a Bama or Ohio State they suddenly gain a star, or so it seems.
i often see this idea, and it's fairly obvious, but i've never understood why this is shocking or frowned upon by people.
this is/was true of usc/texas in the mid 00's, miami/fsu in early 00's, etc.
there's 2 things at play, imo.
1 - when the top schools are turning their attention towards you, these 'recruiting gurus' will likewise pay more attention to you, which theoretically, will give them a better gauge of your abilities.
2 - and this is likely where most people find fault, though it seems fine to me, if the best teams (by perception or otherwise) are recruiting you, then you must be among the best yourself.
this obviously isn't how it work, but an example would be if a kid is going pro, and he has a bunch of cfl teams coming by and looking at him, he might be a middling player. but when the nfl teams, especially the better talent evaluating teams (again, perception or otherwise) come looking and calling, the kid will start to get more recognition as a top overall player. and rightly so.
i'm perfectly fine with kids getting second looks from the recruiting sites and bumps when the big schools start getting involved. cause then it means the people who will be fired if they miss to many think that kid is good. and if they think so, i'm more inclined to believe it.
-
i often see this idea, and it's fairly obvious, but i've never understood why this is shocking or frowned upon by people.
I'm with you. I think it's fairly obvious.
Recruiting services have limited time and limited budget. They can only see a certain number of players. They can only spend a certain amount of time and resources evaluating them.
It's obvious they're not going to get all the calls right. And a lot of times when a player that they've barely looked at is a 3* and suddenly Nick Saban is following him, they look at that player's tape more closely and say: "Hey, maybe he's better than we thought... He looks like a 4* when you really look closely."
----------
I think the issue is that fans want the recruiting services to be experts. They want these rankings to be perfect. They never will be, but there is this Platonic ideal level of performance by the recruiting services that they hold them to. When the recruiting services see that a helmet is offering someone and bumps his rating, those fans say "Hey, rivals/247/etc, you LIED to us!"
-
I'm ok with the offer bump, for the reasons already given. It's the commit bump that is just to keep the large subscriber bases happy which I find comical.
Yes, if a helmet wants you, and they can get in the door with any kid, that's probably significant. That fact that a kid ultimately picks a helmet is not.
-
4* LB Kane Patterson (6'2, 225 lbs) of Tennessee is the first to de-commit from Ohio State during the Urban Meyer drama. Patterson is the #199 ranked player overall and the #9 MLB in the 247Composite rankings. He picked OSU over Alabama and Tennessee last go round. Probably a safe bet to wind up in the SEC or Clemson.
-

Yes, if a helmet wants you, and they can get in the door with any kid, that's probably significant. That fact that a kid ultimately picks a helmet is not.
I don't think it's possible to separate most offer bumps from commit bumps. Especially when a sleeper gets a helmet offer and commits immediately. In many cases, that kid never should have been a sleeper in the first place, and the fact that the bump came after a commitment only distracts from that.
-

Sure, but frequently they don't, and in those cases the commit bump is an obvious money grab. Which is fine, they have a business to run, and helmets provide their biggest subscriber base.
-
My point about the ratings bumps isn't that it's bad or a surprise, but that the star ratings are really not very useful overall.
One could just look at who is getting major offers and presume they are really good. It turns into circular "logic".
Some kid signs with Boise State as a 3 star and stays there but in reality is a very good player who simply wanted to go to BSU and no other schools offered knowing that.
We could probably rank kids based on number of offers times a factor reflecting the status of that program.
And the recruiting rankers do spend way more time on the 4-5 star guys eeking out a few more points, or a few less, depending on random events.
I think too much is made of who has 5 stars versus 4 or 3 in general and whether your team is #1 or #5 or $9, heaven forbit your team would fall all the way to #9 (especially if it is because they had only 16 commits). It's an off season gig I know.

I endorse the thread title though.

can't get them all - but it's worth a shot

3* safety Michigan commit Joey Velasquez with a whale of a first game to kick off his senior season. Scored a rushing td on offense, had 10 tackles total, 4 tackles for loss, and forced 3 fumbles. In one half.
Looks like Don Brown might’ve known something when he threw the lowly 3* Velasquez the offer to play Viper.
Velasquez by the way was the top ranked HS baseball player in Ohio for the 2019 class and was committed to play baseball at Ohio State- that is until Don Brown offered him to play football and be his viper on defense. Velasquez will play both football and baseball at Michigan.

Dedrick Mills, a juco running back formerly with Georgia Tech, has committed to the Huskers for 2019.
Mills becomes the 16th verbal pledge for the class of 2019. He is also the third junior college player in the class. The Huskers seem to be reloading the running back room in preparation of losing both Devine Ozigbo and Mikale Wilbon to graduation after this season. Mills is the third running back commit to go along with 3-star (HV Rating: 87.9) Rahmir Johnson and 4-star (HV Rating: 90.5) Ronald Thompkins.
-
Michigan picks up two 4* commitments.
4* WR/RB Giles Jackson (5'9, 175) out of California picked Michigan over USC and Oregon. Jackson is one of the most athletic, electric players with the ball in the country.
4* DE/OT Mike Morris (6'5, 255) out of Florida flipped from Florida State to Michigan. Florida State wanted him at OT, he wants to play DE. Don Brown apparently loved the kid early on and targeted him. Similar player/body type to Chris Wormley.
Those two commits move their class up to #10 nationally and #1 in the B1G.
also: 5* safety Daxton Hill out of Oklahoma taking his official to Michigan this weekend against SMU. It's the only scheduled visit he has left, might not take others. He's already taken his OV to Alabama. A decision could come soon after his Michigan visit. Most of the national insiders and Bama/Mich insiders all seem to think he's down to Alabama and Michigan in a really tight battle.
-
get Morris to sign and then flip him to OT
position of need

I'm down. They did that with James Hudson.

Michigan really seems to be lacking elite talent at RB. They've went to bat at the RB position this class.
Zach Charbonnet (6'2, 215) out of California picked Michigan over USC and UCLA. 247 is bullish on Charbonnet- they rate him as the #40 player overall in the country and #4 RB- and the 247 West coast analysts Greg Biggins and Brandon Huffman both said he's the top RB out West and that they both have him in contention for FIVE STARZ.
Eric Gray (5'10, 190) out of Tennessee picked Michigan over Penn State and Alabama. 247 is bullish on him as well, they have him rated as the #87 player overall and the #1 All-Purpose RB. Gray lit it up at The Opening and saw his rankings rise. He's rushed for 5,366 yards and scored 90 touchdowns combined in his sophomore and jr seasons of high school football. He was Mr. Football in the state of Tennessee as a junior.
Giles Jackson (5'9, 175) out of California picked Michigan over USC and Oregon. 247 ranks him as the #213 player overall and the #3 All-Purpose back in the country. He really blew up at The Opening, having one of the top 5 SPARQ scores there after reeling off a 4.43 in the 40 (the 6th fastest time at the event) and a 3.85 in the shuttle (the top shuttle time there) and a 38.5" vertical. He was listed by 247 on their All-Opening Team at slot receiver over 5* WR Garrett Wilson- and was listed as one of the top performers overall that week. He started at receiver as a sophomore in HS and caught 42 passes for 847 yards and 13 TD's, then as a RB as a junior when he rushed for 1,586 yards and 22 TD's- so he's got experience playing both positions. Dynamic athlete that can play both spots and return kicks as well.
Now all they need is to develop an offensive line and hire an offensive co-ordinator who has a clue.

That’s a NICE haul! I am so used to Michigan’s rich history in the RB spot. So many studs through the years. My favorite is still A-Train.

That’s a NICE haul! I am so used to Michigan’s rich history in the RB spot. So many studs through the years. My favorite is still A-Train.
I haven't looked, but that's gotta best their best haul on paper at RB since the '13 class when they landed Derrick Green and De'Veon Smith. Green was rated as a 5* and in the top 25 overall, and Smith was a 4* and ranked in the 200's overall.
Green wound up being a bust at Michigan and TCU. Smith wound up being a solid player, but nothing more. Neither were NFL backs.
Anthony Thomas was very highly rated high school recruit, he'd have been a 5 STARZ on the sites had they been around back then. He was the #2 RB in the nation and the #1 player in Louisiana. Probably the last big-time recruit Michigan has signed out of Louisiana. Can't remember one since. He was a heckuva player. 2nd round NFL draft pick, ran for 1,200 as a rookie and won rookie of the year in the NFL. Never really recaptured his rookie year magic, dealt with injuries and off-field crap, but had a solid NFL career.
I think Wheatley was probably my favorite Michigan RB. Still to this day. They haven't had anyone with that kind of talent before or since. He was just freakish. He should've been an NFL Hall of Fame back. He certainly had that sort of raw talent. Legit 6 foot plus, chiseled 235 pounds of muscle and 4.35 speed with incredible power. I've honestly only seen a handful of backs his size with that sort of speed and burst.
-
Shoulda not F'd around with AJ Dillon. That would be M's ELITE running back.
OOPS!

3* DE Darius Robinson, who was a presumed MSU silent verbal, expected to officially announce today on his birthday, has pushed it back. May be bad, may not be, but seems to say he certainly isn't already a silent.
Colorado seems to be making a late push, and he just officialed there a week ago IIRC. Can't blame him, when we did that "what school would you commit to" thread several years back, I wound up getting Colorado.
-
4* LB Josh Calvert from California says it's down to MSU or UCLA.
-
IU got a nice commitment from 4* Florida DB Tiawan Mullen.
-
IU got a nice commitment from 4* Florida DB Tiawan Mullen.
Saw that yesterday, nice get. I saw some Pitt fans locally freaking out, I know they had felt pretty good for a while about landing him.
-
Shoulda not F'd around with AJ Dillon. That would be M's ELITE running back.
OOPS!
yup.
Should've just lied to him to get him there. Then once he was there it would've been apparent to everyone that he's the best RB on the team.
He is a freak athlete. He could probably play OLB or box safety just as well as he plays RB.
-
Omaha Burke tight end Chris Hickman has committed to the Huskers, giving Nebraska a clean sweep of the state’s top five seniors.
-
Damn, Creighton strikes out again!
-
Michigan reeled in a big fish.
5* Daxton Hill (Oklah.) is the composite #1 safety in the country, #12 overall.
Position of need, too. Now they just have to keep on keeping him from Bama like they have so far. If they do, it's a big deal for Michigan.
-
can't stress how HUGE of a pick-up Daxton Hill is. He's a 5*, top 10 player nationally and the #1 safety. Freak athlete. Ran a laser timed 4.3 flat at The Opening at 6'1.5 and 187 pounds. Vertical leaped 44" as well. Could play CB or FS. He is exactly the type of athlete that Don Brown needs at safety- seeing as how Brown leaves his free safety in man coverage for basically 99% of the defensive snaps.
Michigan hasn't landed a safety prospect this good since Jabrill Peppers in that 2014 class. Hill has that same kind of talent. Future 1st round pick just like Peppers.
Michigan also has a really good shot at maybe the #1 player in the country in Zach Harrison. Harrison is an absolute freak. 6'5+, 240+ and runs a 4.47. Laser timed at The Opening. They pull that off- holy cow would the have quite the defensive 5* trifecta. They'd have the most freakish weakside DE prospect in the land, the most freakish SDE prospect in Chris Hinton Jr., and the most freakish safety prospect in Dax Hill. Now that's how you build a defense.
edit: btw- with Hill's commitment it pushes Michigan up to #7th ranked class in the nation in the 247Composite and #1 in the B1G. The class is currently ranked #4 in the nation in 247's own rankings.
-
I think Michigan has a good shot at Harrison (DE) and maybe Keegan (OT). If they do that and add one worthy WR, then all our hand-wringing about this class will look preposterously stupid. Because that class'll have met all the expectations.
-
As for Daxton, I know Peppers was Michigan's last safety recruit with a profile like this (of course, Jabrill's was shinier), but they are such different players. Jabrill was always meant to be near the LOS and be a death merchant for runs and bubble screens. Daxton's game is more about defending the pass at all levels of the secondary. More like Minkah Fitzpatrick in terms of category.

really starting to think they just might land Harrison. He seems like a kid who hates the spotlight and who marches to the beat of his own drum. I think all that pressure to go down the road to Ohio State really wears on him and he might just want to get away from it all.
Steve Witflong- one of the top recruiting guys over at 247 just put up a crystal ball for Keegan to Georgia.
Michigan is still right there with a lot of top kids. But they're going to have to prove it on the field to land them. 5* ATH Qauavaris Crouch and 5* WR Kyle Ford are both ones to watch. Michigan has a big season- they could very easily land both of those kids. They are right there for both of them. 8-4 isn't going to cut it though. They need a 10-2 or 11-1 season and to be in the B1G conference title and playoff hunt. They have that kind of season- they probably become the outright favorite for Crouch.

Hill is closer to Peppers in ranking than Fitzpatrick in terms of HS recruit rankings. Peppers was the #3 player in the 2014 class 247Composite, Fitzpatrick was the #30 player in the 2015 class in the 247Composite. Hill is the #12 ranked player in the 2019 class 247Composite rankings.
In terms of skill sets- they are all very different. Peppers was 5'11, 215, explosive, muscular. In that legit 4.4 speed range. Better suited for box safety- not the best coverage skills. Honestly might've been better in HS as a RB than DB. Freak athlete. He's more suited to be a box safety in run support and blitzing the QB and dropping into zone coverage than he is to play deep field safety or be in man coverage.
Fitzpatrick- 6'0, 205, maybe not as explosive but better ball skills and coverage skills than Peppers but still not the greatest man coverage skills. In that legit 4.5 speed range.
Daxton Hill is 6'1.5", 187 and 4.3 flat speed with a 44 inch vertical. All combine verified. Athletically he is superior to both. He's taller, longer, and faster than either of them. In all honesty the kid should be ranked higher than #12 in the composite. Rivals and ESPN are screwing up his ranking. He's #12 in the composite but 247's own rankings have him at #8. And that seems like a more accurate ranking when you take into account the kind of insane measurables he brings to the position. Hill is taller, longer, has a higher vertical, and better recovery speed and man coverage ability than either of those guys did coming out of high school.
-
With scout crashing and ESPN still fire-and-forgetting on 3/4 of the country (giving an early Soph/Junior ranking, maybe not even an article and then never returning with a follow-up thought), we're getting close to the point where the 247 rank is more valuable than the composite.
247 clearly puts in the most work, and in follow-up rankings for Michigan players 247 again seems the best predictor, but even if the other services are consistently crappier, i have to stick with the composite because I have a lot of respect for the idea of avoiding even the *appearance* of cherry-picking the ranking that best serves one's argument.
Except for that sticking point, I fully agree with you.
-
Most helmet school fans prefer 247 rankings.
I believe when comparing 5 stars to NFL drafts and class rankings to eventual team rankings, Rivals has still consistently come out on top.
Anything other than the composite ranking is cherry picking IMO.

Rivals has been around since the beginning of the internet ranking sites. Their rankings go all the way back to like 2000.
247 is pretty much brand new. I think their first rankings go back to 2012. Started by guys who used to work at Rivals. They also merged with Scout. I honestly think they are the gold standard now in that field. They've lapsed Rivals by a pretty wide margin imo.
I liked the Composite, but it's definitely lost some of it's value now that Scout is no more and ESPN has pretty much slashed the budget to zero for their recruiting website. Wouldn't be surprised at all to see ESPN just quit doing it with the way that company is hemorrhaging cash.

Your bottom line is how I feel and I'll be steadfast about that for sake of minimizing bias. Still, it's fair to say the composite is weakening. However, I wasn't aware of helmets being more pro-247 and non-helmets being more pro- ... rivals/espn/either?
-
247 has always had the strongest commit bump correlation. They are all subscriber driven models, it's not Consumer Reports. As far as I can tell, there's zero correlation between accuracy and subscribers, so for the newest kid on the block, they needed to attract subscribers from the biggest fan bases to stay afloat.
Personally I've flipped from Rivals to 247 simply for the composite and better interface. I think the MSU writers are better at 247 than Rivals, but I'm guessing that varies school to school
-
I subscribe to 247 and Rivals. Dropped my ESecPN subscription. They suck.

nice little blurb about 5* ATH Quavaris Crouch (6'3, 225) of North Carolina from the Clemson 247 site.
"If 247Sports Composite five-star athlete Quavaris Crouch was considered a Tennessee lean entering the season, I wonder what's going through his head right now. His relationship with Tennessee's staff, including Jeremy Pruitt, might be enough for the Vols to overcome a dismal start to the season but that's TBD. Reminder, he takes an official to Michigan on Oct. 13, FSU on Oct. 24, and he's eyeing the Duke game or sometime in December for his Clemson official.
Michigan might be the team to beat right now, and after talking with him last month, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. Don't count out Clemson, though."
Also, maybe the top Ohio guy over at 247 Bill Kurelic says Michigan is the major threat to Ohio State for 5* DE Zach Harrison.
would be huge to land them both. Crouch would probably play OLB and Harrison weakside end.
-
I know 247,Rivals,ESPN have recruiting coverage. What about MaxPreps or the guy who covered/favored Notre Dame whose name escapes me right now
Ah I remembered - Tom Lemming, shame Scout went bye. Also does Hudl count?
-
The Badgers got a really nice kicker/punter to commit as a PWO with a 'ship coming in the sophomore year.
https://kohlskicking.com/player-profiles/blake-wilcox
Seems like the real deal.
-
Those gets are so underrated. Zoltan Mesko changed games for Michigan. Will Hart wasn't so highly rated but he's doing the same as punter now - best distance in the nation so far, I recall seeing. Then, Quinn Nordin is a bit of an enigma early (looking like a true master of 50+ FGs but a few disappointing XP and FG misses from up close).
-
I remember King Barry, after the 1998 season, talking about "hidden yards" during a game. He said that UW averaged over 100 yards more per game than their opponents, on special teams.
That is HUGE.

That's right. Every yard earned is a yard, no matter its phase of the game.

Four star receiver Jameson Williams pledges to the Bucks out of St. Louis
-
MSU adds 3* J.D.
And whattayaknow, now OSU swoops in with a late offer
-
Unclear if this is on scholarship or as a walk on
https://twitter.com/KohlsKicking/status/1048008437567635457
-
4* RB Sampson James from Avon, IN decommits from OSU on Saturday and committed to IU today.
-
That’s huge. Mike Hart flips a top RB recruit from Urban and OSU.
MAN do I wish Mike Hart was the RBs coach at Michigan. This has to happen. ASAP. Maybe John Harbaugh can hire his nephew as a NFL coach and there’s an opening. A guy can dream right?
-
Badgers flipped TE Clay Cundiff from the Jayhawks over the weekend. Should be done recruiting that position now, with 2 in the fold.
-
Michigan already has a 5* DT committed in Chris Hinton out of Georgia and a 5* Safety committed in Dax Hill out of Oklahoma.
Very real chance at adding 5* DE Zach Harrison out of Ohio and 5* LB Quavaris Crouch out of North Carolina.
Harrison is down to Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State- and the recent chatter has been that it might just be Michigan in the drivers seat.
Crouch is down to Michigan and Clemson. Tennessee is still in it but just barely. He'd have most likely already been a Michigan commit if Ann Arbor wasn't so far away.
5* DE
5* DT
5* LB
5* S
They have a very legitimate shot at that haul. A kid from Georgia. A kid from Oklahoma. A kid from North Carolina. And a kid literally from Ohio State's backyard. If they pull that off- that's some Alabama shit right there.
Even crazier to think there are two 5* OL's in the state of Michigan this class and they won't get either one of them but they have a great shot at those 4 out of state kids. Already got two of them. And are favorites for the other two.
-
MSU adds 3* RB Aaron Young from PA. Offers from PSU, Nebraska, Maryland, Stanford and a bunch of East coast schools.
-
4* LB Josh Calvert from California says it's down to MSU or UCLA.
After his visit a couple weeks ago, and subsequent comments re: MSU and UCLA, it was thought an MSU commitment was imminent. Instead a surprise visit to Washington this past weekend, and he committed. USC didn't seem interested, and I think he was looking to stay on the west coast, but wasn't sure UCLA was going anywhere. Washington jumped on him, and gave him a chance to stay west, and play for a good team. Can't fault him.
-
3* DT Taurean Carter from TX, announcing between MSU, Wisconsin and Arkansas on Wednesday
-
MSU adds 3* RB Aaron Young from PA. Offers from PSU, Nebraska, Maryland, Stanford and a bunch of East coast schools.
PSU writer said he was a guy PSU thought they could slow play and still land as a Plan B, pushed hard recently, but didn't land.

Vancouver (Wash.) Union athlete Darien Chase will go from catching passes from Lincoln to catching passes in Lincoln.
The two-way prospect, who starts at receiver and defensive back for the Titans, will play receiver for Nebraska, announcing his commitment just a few hours ago.
Chase, the highest-rated uncommitted prospect in the Northwest, narrowed his choices down to Boise State and Nebraska, having visited both this fall.
He had early Pac-12 offers from Oregon, Oregon State, Washington and Utah
-
Lakeville (Minn.) North Top247 offensive tackle Bryce Benhart announced his decision to play at Nebraska on Sunday evening.
Scott Frost and the Huskers staff beat out Michigan and Wisconsin among others for the top target regardless of position on their recruiting board.
The 247Sports Top247 Player Rankings bills the 6-foot-8, 305-pound Benhart as the nation's No. 10 offensive tackle and No. 65 prospect overall. The No. 1 prospect in the state of Minnesota also had scholarships from the likes of the Gophers, Northwestern, Notre Dame and Tennessee.
With Benhart in the fold, this Nebraska class rises two spots to No. 22 in the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings, good for No. 4 in the Big Ten.
-
MSU gets a commitment from an Aussie punter, Jack Bouwmeester. He is on scholarship, which seems odd, they already had a commitment from a kid who was rated as a top 5 punter in the country by some of the kicking services. Oh well.
2* CB Jaelin Leroy from FL also committed over the weekend. Except no sites list him as having an offer...from anywhere. He also claims a UMass offer, but that's not reported either. This one seems fishy.
-
damn. Nebraska got two big commits in a week. Impressive recruiting job by Frost. If he winds up bringing Nebraska back to national prominence- this conference is going to over-take the SEC in my humble opinion.
-
Frost needs an O-line and D-line, but at least he recognizes this and will try to build them
-
Javin Wright, defensive back from Arizona and son of former Nebraska rover Toby Wright, commits to the Huskers.
The Hamilton High School standout made his first trip to Lincoln for the Colorado game as an official visitor. He is a legacy recruit, as his father Toby Wright was a Blackshirt in the '90s. That means Wright grew up learning about the Huskers and their traditions. He had a great time on his trip to Lincoln despite the loss that day.
On Oct. 20, Wright officially visited UCLA and enjoyed that trip as well. Prior to making a decision he said that both schools were neck-and-neck. Score one for Frost in a battle with his former boss, Chip Kelly.
This summer Wright really saw his recruitment take off and he went over the double-digit mark in offers. It will be interesting to see what happens with Wright once he gets to campus. He has tremendous size for a cornerback but his frame would probably allow for him to grow into a safety or even an outside linebacker. (6-foot-3, 190 pounds)
For now, the Huskers have added another key piece to their defensive backfield where they need to continue adding quality prospects like Wright. The defender is the 20th known commitment for the 2019 class and the second defensive back joining Georgia standout Quinton Newsome.
-
4* WR Milton Wright out of Louisville commits to the Boilers.
-
Milton wright's commit video is fantastically well done. Short, sweet, but low key with just enough flair.

:). I love it! Boiler Up! Brohm Squad.
-
That's slick, @jhetfield99 (https://www.cfb51.com/index.php?action=profile;u=1625) -- thanks for posting!
-
UM offers LB Brock Horne as a PWO. Once MSU lost out on the Cali kid to Washington, I liked Horne's film enough to give him a scholarship offer as a Plan B. Still has no P5 scholarship offers I believe, but if UM gets him as a walk on, that would be a steal. IMO hell be a contributor.

247Sports updated their rankings yesterday.
Michigan RB commit Zach Chabornnet out of California jumps all the way up to #26 overall and is ranked as the #3 RB. In striking distance of the coveted 5 STARZ!!!! His composite ranking jumped all the way up to #100 with the update.
Michigan DL commit Chris Hinton Jr. out of Georgia plummets from #36 all the way to #104 in their rankings. Hinton has lost his 5th star in the composite, but is still ranked in the top 40 in the composite- which means ESPN and Rivals have him ranked a lot higher than 247.
Michigan's class is ranked 8th in the nation in the 247Composite class rankings with this update, and they are ranked 3rd in 247's own class rankings with this update.
https://247sports.com/Season/2019-Football/RecruitRankings/?InstitutionGroup=HighSchool
OT Logan Brown moves into their top 5 players overall. Still pissed off that Wisconsin snatched him. If I'm Jim Harbaugh, I send Ed Warriner to his school and make him live there until Brown agrees to visit Michigan.
-
Interesting battle brewing between MSU and OSU for rising 3* DT Cavon Butler. Currently committed to Kentucky, but apparently because he has a grades issue, and none of his other offers (MSU and OSU included) are commitable for now. If grades get up, seems certain he'll flip to one of those two.
-
haven't seen this mentioned yet, know it's only a CRYSTAL BALLZ prediction- but it's significant imo.
Probably the top guy covering recruiting in the state of Ohio over at 247Sports- Bill Kuerlic- just changed his crystal ball from Ohio State to Michigan for 5* DE Zach Harrison. Kuerlic is basically the Ohio State version of Sam Webb. Homer, yes. But the dude is plugged in. He doesn't make predictions or talk about things he doesn't know about.
You never know with recruiting, but right now, it looks like it's happening. Looks like Michigan may have pulled the #1 player in the state of Ohio, a kid from Columbus- literally 15 mins down the street from The Shoe. A kid that's a 5* and the #5 player overall in the 247Composite. Won't believe it til the signature is in, but it looks like Harbaugh just might've pulled it off. Crazy.

I dunno. He's always been luke warm for OSU. But it's good for Michigan that they are an alternative for those kids again.

Nebraska football picked up a commitment on Sunday as Westlake, Georgia, safety Myles Farmer committed following his official visit to Nebraska.
The 6-foot-3, 194-pound Farmer was one of several official visitors to Nebraska on the weekend, and pulled the trigger on a commitment after returning home. Farmer announced the decision on Twitter.

the question is: Can Frost get them in the top 2 or 3 in the conference, overall or by average star?

One of the top prep running backs in Colorado, Zach Weinmaster, announced on Twitter Sunday he was walking on to Nebraska's football program.
Zach Weinmaster is the younger brother of Husker inside linebacker Jacob Weinmaster, a former walk-on who received a scholarship in August. Jacob Weinmaster has 13 tackles this season, mostly on special teams.
The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Zach Weinmaster is likely to play on the offensive side of the ball, perhaps at receiver. At Loveland (Colo.) High School, he's a star running back who has rushed for 1,667 yards and 25 touchdowns this season. In his career, he's rushed for more than 4,400 yards and 60 touchdowns.
-
Michigan picks up a commitment today from 4* CB Jalen Perry (6'1", 188 lbs) out of Georgia. Perry was committed to Georgia for months, but de-committed about a month ago. He was basically down to Michigan, South Carolina, Auburn, and Florida, and he just picked Michigan today. He's the #171st ranked player overall and the #18th ranked CB in the 247Composite player rankings.

Markquese Bell was such a problem, that even the evil DJ Durkin suspended him. He ended up going the JuCo route.
Just saw today that he picked up an offer from Scott Frost. Not surprised.
He may have a bunch of people fooled, but I saw first hand his "culture" at UCF.

Eh, not many. He played for a guy who allowed a guy to do bad things and still play, and may have witnessed a bad thing himself while doing nothing about it. While Oz may have been correct on his assessment that LP needed a lot of help, he was incorrect in thinking that it should be in the form of giving LP the privilege of playing football.
Hours after the team returned from East Lansing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Lansing,_Michigan) on September 10, 1995, Phillips broke into backup quarterback Scott Frost (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Frost)'s apartment by climbing the outside of the building to the third floor and entering through some sliding doors. He then assaulted basketball player Kate McEwen. Phillips dragged McEwen out of the apartment by the hair and down three flights of stairs before smashing her head into a mailbox. Phillips was subsequently arrested, and eventually suspended by head coach Tom Osborne (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Osborne). The case became a source of controversy and media attention, with the perception that Frost had not even tried to protect McEwen and that Osborne was coddling a star player by not kicking Phillips off the team permanently. Osborne walked out on a press conference when asked "If one of your players had roughed up a member of your family and had dragged her down a flight of steps, would you have reinstated that player to the team?"[8] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Phillips#cite_note-8) Outraged Nebraska faculty proposed that any student convicted of a violent crime be prohibited from representing the university on the football field.[9] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Phillips#cite_note-9) Osborne defended the decision, saying that abandoning Phillips might do more harm than good, stating the best way to help Phillips was within the structured environment of the football program. Osborne stated ""I felt the only thing I could put in a place that would keep him on track was football, because that was probably the only consistent organizing factor in his life."[10] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Phillips#cite_note-10) After a six-game suspension, Osborne reinstated Phillips for the Iowa State (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iowa_State_Cyclones) game,[11] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Phillips#cite_note-11) although touted freshman Ahman Green (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahman_Green) continued to start. Phillips also played against Kansas (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kansas_Jayhawks_football) and Oklahoma (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oklahoma_Sooners_football).

QB Harrison Bailey, in a bit of a surprise, picks Tennessee over Michigan.
He’s a 2020. Not only is it a surprise, it’s ANOTHER indictment on Pep/Harbaugh.
Can’t blame the kid. He made the right decision imo. I wouldn’t go play for Michigan and this shit Stone Age offense that runs the ball 65% of the time and has a shit passing scheme.
edit: oh yeah, by the way the kicked picked a 5-7 team without an Offensive Co-ordinator bc the UT OC just took the WKU job like three days ago. So this kid would rather go to a 5-7 team without an offensive co-ordinator than play for Harbaugh. This kid was a big-time recruit too. 4*, top 100 player, #3 Pro-Style QB and the #5 player in the state of Georgia in the 247Composite 2020 class rankings. He was a heavy Michigan lean early on and they just completely shat the bed on this one and wound up losing him to a 5-7 Tennessee team without an offensive co-ordinator. Ridiculous.

May also mean he values immediate PT, and likes his chances at a 5-7 team? It's also closer to home. There are always other factors. If kids just always signed up for the best program, Alabama would literally just pick the kids they wanted; then Clemson and Ohio State would divide up the rest. Might be close to that, but those three do actually lose recruiting battles sometimes.

Just struck a chord with me when pundits were praising Frost and his "no profanity" rule as a contrast to how Maryland was so "toxic".
I witnessed several of his players at UCF simulate pissing on our field with Gatorade bottles, purposely going at our QB's knees the year before, and mouthing off and pushing coaches on the opponents sideline.
Something tells me, he's no angel.
-
not many angels in this game, but I'd say Frost is on the better side of the aisle. no angel
no coach is going to completely control 100+ guys on the roster over a period of years, but Frost has handled things in Lincoln so far.

Lincoln North Star’s Luke Reimer decommits from South Dakota State to walk on at Nebraska.

4* RB Eric Gray from Memphis, TN de-commits from Michigan.
Gray is ranked in the 247Composite as the #209 player in the nation and the #3 All-Purpose back.
Yet another blow. Harbaugh has been a complete disaster the last few weeks. Couldn’t end a season any worse. This is a recurring fricken theme. One that I am getting sick and tired of.

Looks like Tennessee. SEC East is about to get fun again, particularly if Stoops can keep Kentucky decent.

This kid is a complimentary piece, not an every down back. He’s basically a more talented version of Chris Evans. Sucks to see him go but not sure these dumb offensive coaches would use him properly.
Tennessee is still gonna suck for awhile. Georgia owns the east now but Florida is coming. Mullen has been doing it with a terrible QB like Franks. He gets his QB and Florida will take off.
-
Wonder if Notre Dame or some other big boys are going to come sniffing around MSU WR commit Alante Brown. He was a 2* kid with offers from Cincinnati, Minnesota and MAC schools when MSU offered over the summer, got bumped to 4* by 247 today.
-
Michigan just offered 3* RB DJ Williams (5’11, 210) from Florida. Kid is an App State commit who has blown up in the last month of his senior season. He’s gotten offers from Georgia, Auburn, Miami, Michigan, Texas, Tennessee, and South Carolina in the last month alone.
He’s the nephew of former Miami great Edgerrin James. He lives in a little rural town in the middle of nowhere Florida, which is probably how he fell through the cracks. His highlights are ridiculous. Plays QB in high school and his speed looks out of this world. Looks an awful lot like former 5*, #1 RB in HS Cam Akers who signed with Florida State and also played QB in HS and had ridiculous speed.
Probably gonna go to Miami but damn he’d be a great consolation prize for losing Eric Gray. Actually like his film better. He’s bigger, faster, and stronger than Gray.

Nebraska landed a commitment on Sunday from Jamin Graham, a three-star defensive recruit from Alabama.
Nebraska adds a defensive player with a lot of explosiveness and a frame that could grow from outside linebacker to defensive end. Graham is listed at 6-foot-4, 225 pounds and told Husker247 before the visit that he could play either spot in a college defense.
The defender is set to sign during the early December visit period. Previously, Graham was looking at visiting Southern Miss next weekend, but now things are quiet until he officially signs. The Huskers won the commitment of Graham over several other power five schools. The defender held offers from Minnesota, Mississippi State, South Carolina and Virginia.

Maybe it's Tenne$$ee with all these commits they are getting to flip. =)

Frankfort (Ky.) Western Hills Top247 all-purpose back Wandale Robinson will play his college football at Nebraska.
The four-star recruit decommitted from Kentucky on Tuesday evening and went public with his plans to play for the Huskers on Wednesday.
Ranked by the 247Sports Top247 Player Rankings as the No. 2 all-purpose back in America and No. 1 recruit in Kentucky,
Robinson is commit No. 23 for Nebraska in 2019, becoming one of the jewels for a class that ranks No. 22 nationally per the 247Sports Composite.

that is a big flip for the huskers.

Michigan RB commit Zach Charbonnet flies up the latest updated 247Composite rankings to 42nd overall in the nation- within striking distance of the coveted 5 STARZ. Charbonnet was ranked 408th in the nation in the very first 247Composite 2019 rankings which came out in August of 2017. He's flown up 366 spots in the 247Composite in large part because of major bumps by 247 and Rivals. After a dominant senior season, 247 moved him all the way up to 26th overall in their rankings and Rivals just bumped him to 39th overall in theirs. ESPN still holding his ranking down as they rank him somewhere in the 100's overall. He'll have a shot to move up, as he's playing in ESPN's HS All-Star Under Armour game, and they tend to rate guys who show well in those week of practices and that game.

HUGE get. Kid is a beast!

I can already see the rhyming comparisons/puns/memes/bad one-liners from tv analysts about Wandale and Rondale. But I bet it'll be deserved. W.R. looks that good.

His film is that infinitely long kind of reel you don't want to watch because you're just going to end up more disappointed and as if you jinxed it when he goes elsewhere. I know Michigan has had a lot of 5-star RB flops, and I know we always say "Oh but this one's obviously different" and that's exactly what I'm doing this time - again. Still, he stands out in a crowd.

Pfft.
Jonathon Taylor was the 24th ranked RB in the country, and 371st ranked player. Now he is the best RB in the country and a top-10 player.
But STARZ!!! I just don't buy into that for RB (and OL).
-

Purdue was late in the running for Wandale when he chose Kentucky. I don't think we were ever a favorite, but we made the final 5 and got an OV. The analysts would have creamed themselves if he'd ended up on the same team as Rondale.
Really hoping that David Bell chooses Purdue. 247 has him 90% crystal ball to Purdue, and he plans to make his announcement at the Army All-American Game.

I think you expect I'd disagree with the spirit of your post. I wouldn't.
It's no secret that I favor starz more than you because they are so consistently predictive of success in aggregate. Perhaps less at RB and OL, though. Even then, I'm not convinced the correlation is absent for OL or RBs, just comparatively depressed.
But the rest of what you wrote is entirely consistent with both of our perspectives on recruiting.
-
I think STARZ!! are better for guys playing WR, QB, LB, CB and (possibly) S. Much of that is related to speed, which can't be coached. The trench positions and RB (and maybe S) are where the services seem to miss the most on STARZ!!
-
I think OL is a lot more of a predictor for RB success than STARZ!
Is Jonathan Taylor the "best" RB in the country? Always tough to tell, because the Wisconsin system and OL will make pedestrian RBs look good, good RBs look great, and great RBs look outstanding.

Agree 100%.
Bama is a great example of this as well. They’ve been a plug and play system for RBs just because their OL’s and run system was so great. Trent and Derrick Henry were all-time great in college. Not so much in the NFL.

Disagree on the RB position and STARZ. Typically the 5*’s backs pan out at a high rate. Look back through the rankings, they typically nail those more than the other positions.
Completely disagree on QBs and LBs and the STARZ. Those positions are as much of a crap shoot as OL. Those 3 positions are basically worthless when it comes to STARZ gazing. Just so much about playing QB you don’t know till he’s out there doing it at this level. LBs are so hit and miss because it’s such an instinct based position and speed really doesn’t matter as much as play recognition, awareness, instinct, shedding blockers.
-
Todd Gurley, Nick Chubb, Sony Michel and D'Andre Swift were all 5 stars who played like 5 stars. Zamir White is the latest but he tore his ACL last summer. By all accounts, he is the next star here.
-
System fit also matters.... you can be a 5 star and not fit in a system. On average, stars indicate talent level/potential. At the micro or individual level, they mean little.
-
Disagree on the RB position and STARZ. Typically the 5*’s backs pan out at a high rate. Look back through the rankings, they typically nail those more than the other positions.
I started with 2015. I'm not seeing what you're seeing at RB. They did pretty good in 2014 though.
They are doing a little better on the hit rate with 5* QB's than with RB. QB is getting screwy though, with all the transfers and stuff.
-
the services giving out starz get lucky sometimes
they aren't always wrong

If you add DL (probably one of the service's strongest correlations to All-American and NFL draft status), I'm sure you're right.
But saying that the recruiting services having a stronger star correlation for those positions isn't the same thing as saying that there is no correlation for OL and RB. There's a positive correlation for every position. Unsurprisingly, it varies. Making OL and RB predictive but more weakly than is typical.
So for *every* position, absent more reliable inside info, you should always bet on the recruiting services. That there are exceptions is beside the point. Most often, STARZ come out on top.
Except for Wisconsin.
-
Well, outside of the services, I like to rely on coaches I trust. Camp or late-bloomer offers from guys like Don Brown, for example, are huge. Dantonio excels there too. It's not just UW. Iowa does well. NU too.
There are a lot of kids out there who don't shine on film until they are seniors. For them, it's too late to get to 4/5 STARZ!! status, but it's not too late for them to get big offers and play like STARZ!! in college.
-
Somebody somewhere has probably done a correlation between STARZ and rankings 3-4 year down the road.
I'm guessing it's a pretty good correlation with some obvious outliers.
FSU might be an example lately of one, an "anti-Wiscons" as it were.
Army did well this year.
-
I think there are like 25 5* players and 200 4* players every year. We have 65 +/- P5 schools competing for those kids. Every year the same 10-15 (or so) schools get 10-15 (or so) of these kids, and the other 50-55 schools are left with the rest.
This year UW has 6 4* kids, so far, and one 5*. That is the most they've ever had in one cycle. We'll see what they do with those kids.
-
can't stress how HUGE of a pick-up Daxton Hill is.
Flipped to Bama
-
Oh yeah, and it's a devastating one. There's literally no one in the country (committed elsewhere or not) as good, we passed on a lot of lesser but high end kids because he joined up, and of course this was the only real weakness in Don Brown's defense. So the emotional high of getting him deserved itself.
That's what DB gets for not responding versus OSU, though. Again: he's a great DC, but this is his limitation. He can design and coach an elite defense. And if he's merely out-schemed to a small to "semi-large" degree by an opponent, he's a master at adapting/tweaking within the confines of his initial plan and shutting them diown.
Howeverrrr, if his group is entirely unready (in scheme), he refuses to design a completely new defense. That's only happened twice in 3 years (PSU-17, OSU-18). And he's still had 3 top 5 national defenses in 3 years. So this is obviously not the worst problem. But whereas it might not, per se, reduce Michigan's ceiling under Harbaugh, it certainly wastes chances for them to reach a ceiling they haven't touched.
Against OSU, Michigan's defense had three easily schemeable issues, but two of them required an entire rewriting of the defense, which was a bridge too far for DB's brain. We all get that. They entered that game with the nation's runaway #1 statistical D. Such a group probably shouldn't expect to get so punched in the mouth that they have to entirely change, but still:
- Rewriting of the defense: Go zone (because although DBs one and two are handling their guy, DB #3 is a gaping wound in man coverage)
- Rewriting of the defense: Blitz (because suddenly a 4-man rush is insufficient)
- Personnel: Replace BWat with Ambry. Stop giving Gil 50% of Ross's snaps.
That may not win the game, but it certainly won't lead to the 62. And likely not the loss of this class's crown jewel.
-
I think you are over thinking it. I think if UM loses 3-0 he still flips. I think at some point it's not about scheme, it's that if you are going to recruit against programs like Alabama and Oklahoma recruits can't keep seeing those teams in the playoffs while Michigan is not
-
I don't think so. This is out of nowhere. If 3-0 were to do it, I suspect we'd have known for some time to be worried. That's my gamble, at least.
-

bingo.
Harbaugh is NEVER going to land elite top 10 kids in the nation like this if he keeps losing to Ohio State and missing the playoffs. Guarantee you if Michigan beats OSU in 2016 and this season and wins the B1G CG and is in the playoffs both those years this kid doesn't flip.
DEVASTATING blow to this recruiting class, yet ANOTHER indictment on Harbaugh, and frankly just another chink in the already damaged armor.
I really don't think Harbaugh will last much longer at Michigan. I just don't see him having the kind of success that Michigan is paying him for unless he's willing to give up full control of the offense and really evolve and change. And I just can't see him doing that.
He'll be here a few more years and then back to the NFL.
-
Warde won't fire him and he clearly doesn't want to leave. Tell me why I shouldn't want it that way. Of those who'd certainly take the job, who is *obviously* a better candidate?
-

Not sure Michigan can do better. There are only two truly elite coaches in college.
Nick Saban and Urban are the only truly elite coaches in the college game. Also happen to be the two best recruiters. Nick ain’t going anywhere and Urban is done maybe for good. If he comes back it’ll be his last go round and he ain’t coming back to Michigan.
I just don’t see Harbaugh giving up control of his dog shit offenses and hiring someone innovative from outside his comfort zone that will really take that offense and program up to the next level. That and that alone is going to do him in. The losing to OSU and not making the playoff and coming up short is going to wear on both sides and they’ll eventually just mutually part ways imo.
-
3* DE Darius Robinson, who was presumed to be a heavy MSU lean, had his friend post a video showing him dunking, and introcuing him as an MSU commit?
That moment when your buddy blows your silent verbal, and ruins your moment.
Sounds like he slow played it too much and lost his offer to Minnesota decommit M.J. Anderson from St. Louis.

-

I'm not sure that's really all that big of a deal. I don't know that I 100% buy this argument.
So they're paying him a LOT of money, yes. But it's not like he's putting terrible teams out every year. They're right on the cusp of B1G championships. They just can't get over the hump.
But what is Michigan going to do? Get some cheap up-and-comer, and be happy for the same [or slightly worse] performance for half the cost? Budget doesn't make a difference here.
If they were to fire Harbaugh, it would have to be some can't-miss coaching prospect, so undoubtedly they'd be paying in the same ballpark amount of money they're paying him. That might be an option if you can prove that Michigan is truly underperforming to a large degree.
Harbaugh's win percentage is right around the same level as Carr and Moeller so far, and none of them are all that far behind Bo.
I personally think they stand pat here, ESPECIALLY now that Urban is gone and he has a much higher probability of beating OSU.
-

The reality of the situation is they have to pay him what they do or he'll be in the NFL. The guy is the most sought after coach in the NFL circles. EVERY DAMN TIME there is an NFL job open, his name is linked to it. Apparently the Packers GM is in love with Harbaugh and wants him. Doubt Rodgers would love that marriage, but apparently Mike Murphy wants Harbaugh.
Of course they are going to stand pat. I said before I don't think he ever gets fired. I think it'll just come to the point where he gets tired of not beating Ohio State and the fan backlash that comes with it- and that he'll just say whatever and go off to the NFL. Because as long as he keeps winning 10 games a year at Michigan, an NFL job will be there waiting whenever the hell he wants it.
Don't get me wrong. The guy has done a heckuva turnaround job. Michigan was a dumpster fire before he got here. An absolute dumpster fire. He's turned it around in a big way, but not all the way. At Michigan, it's all about beating Ohio State. Part of the reason Carr stuck around so long despite going 9-3 and 8-4 all the time is because he would pretty much always beat Ohio State at the end of the year. After they hired Tressell and that started to change is ONLY when Carr really started to feel the heat. Carr retired- but he was basically pushed out because he couldn't beat Ohio State and Jim Tressel. It's all about beating Ohio State. And Jim hasn't done that. Not sure he will consistently unless he evolves and changes the offense and gives up some control to a legit OC. Not a loser like Pep Hamilton that made Andrew Luck look bad and got fired by the Colts because Luck regressed under him, and then went to the Browns and got fired again. Think about how hard that is to do- make Andrew Luck look like crap- you have to be a real shit coach to do that. Well, Pep Hamilton did that.
But they aren't paying him like an NFL coach at almost $9 million a year in total compensation to win 10 games a year. They are paying him that kind of money to beat Ohio State and make the playoff. Hasn't beaten Ohio State and hasn't made the playoff once in 4 years. You don't make that kind of scratch to put out the product and record he does.
-
Although we can have talks about expectations of output for a given salary, the truth is that many salaries, including that of the Michigan HC, are based more on the institution than the person filling it.
Harbaugh makes more than Hoke who made more than Carr whose income beat out Bo. Whoever comes after Harbaugh, no matter their pedigree or output, will make as much or more (unless CFB's unsustainable salary structures finally crumble across the country).
Because it's not based on who they are but where they work. And for Harbaugh, that place of work began with high prestige then, like many P5 ADs, began experiencing a multi decade financial windfall to top it off. At which point, Michigan is already getting exactly what it's paying for.
So if you want to be grumpy with Harbaugh, fine, but his salary should be irrelevant to that conversation.
-
fans like to expect a top 10 or top 5 product if the coach top 10 in getting paid
-
fans like to expect a top 10 or top 5 product if the coach top 10 in getting paid
Fans are unreasonable morons.
-
Haha, yes we are!! But to play devil's advocate in favor of Fearless and Mdot, we do subsidize every coach salary through our tickets, apparel and cable packages. So despite being unreasonable morons, there's hope to forgive ourselves.
BUT that doesn't change the fact that Harbaugh isn't paid [x million] to [insert accomplishment]. He's paid his salary because Michigan hired him. It may seem boringly simplistic but that's actually the full and only reason for his salary. He'd be paid less at most other schools and his successor will be paid as much or more.
Any Michigan fan complaining about Harbaugh's salary/accomplishment ratio should either go the full step and recommend he be fired or just stop. Given the 10-win seasons after the Hoke/RR eras, my recommendation is they stop.
-

Agreed.
On a Purdue blog, someone had the temerity to ask what Brohm's leash is now that we're paying him top-10 money. How long do we accept results below that?
Morons. As if they'd accept worse results if we paid a coach <$1M (Hope), or $2M (Hazell). Nobody wanted to keep 6-6 Hope just because he was overperforming his salary.
If you have a coach you want to keep, you pay market rates to keep him. It's as simple as that. Beyond that point, $$$ doesn't correlate to wins.

Welp, in a crazy turn of events sounds like the Dax Hill recruitment isn’t over. Even the Bama mods over at 247Sports are a little uneasy/unsure if Dax sticks with them. Sounds like this one ain’t over.
Apparently the kids brother Justice Hill- the Ok St RB- declared for the draft and hired an NFL agent. His NFL idiot agent was basically telling the family Harbaugh is going back to the NFL. Probably why you saw Harbaugh come out literally the day after Dax Hill flipped and strongly stated to the media that he isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
-
Waiting on word of a Quinten Johnson flip....

Normally I’d agree with you, but Dax Hill wasn’t that type of kid and this caught the entire recruiting world completely off guard.
Wonder if Cris Carter’s ignorant ass going on national tv spouting he has sources that tell him Harbaugh is looking to go back to the NFL had anything to do with this.
Apparently the kids brother has an NFL agent who told the family the same thing- Harbaugh would be taking an NFL job this offseason or the next. Which is why he flipped on such short notice. The flip even caught the Alabama staff off guard according to the Bama insiders. This kid isn’t like that. He’s not one of those kids full of himself or into recruiting and press clippings.

Told NC State no, is debating between sticking with his commitment or flipping to MSU. Apparently his dad is his HS coach and a long time friend of the WMU coach, which is what's making this tough on him.

Badger class is up to 19 now, with the commit they got today. 4* SS Titus Toler out of St. John Bosco flipped to UW today, from his Colorado commit. That makes 2 Bosco commits in this class, to go along with LB Spencer Lytle.

I think he was a better football coach than chemistry teacher lol...

Took a scholarship from Bowling Green instead. I still would have no problem with MSU offering him. I think he's a real nice late hail Mary.

OSU trending hard for 5* DE Zach Harrison, who is announcing tomorrow morning.
Two things happened which flipped that recruitment on its head:
The beat down in Columbus and Urban retiring. Michigan had the lead. It’s not that they lost. It’s how they lost which gave the kid a pause. He told other Michigan recruits he can’t go to Michigan if they can never beat OSU. Also: he actually wasn’t a fan of Urban. It’s rare as hell- but some kids don’t like Urban. Wasn’t a secret he didn’t like Urban. Sounds like he’s clicked with Ryan Day’s personality.
Just another indictment on Harbaugh and his ability to finish the season down the stretch and close on elite recruits. Feel like the hype has worn off and he’s running out of steam. Next year is his put up or shut up year. If he doesn’t win the B1G and beat OSU he’s done.
-
Flipped to MSU. Losing your long time QB commit sucks, tough to find a Plan B. Kid has a good arm, but he's short.
Yeah. Especially when he recruits a bunch of other kids to come with him, then bolts with one of your top LB's in the class.
Leaves a bad taste in everyone's mouth, from recruits, coaches, and Heisman voters.
-
Sam Shurtleff, an outside linebacker prospect from Georgia,* announces he’s walking on at Nebraska.
Surtleff is the 12th known member of NU's 2019 walk-on class, a group that could eventually finish at more than 20.
He is the second out-of-state walk-on in the group, joining Loveland, Colorado, receiver Zach Weinmaster.

Looks like Hill flipped back to Michigan
-
For OSU, very interesting. QB Dwan Mathis may have flipped to Georgia. Hmmm.
-
3* RB Aaron Young may have flipped from MSU to Rutgers. He's from Eastern PA, so makes sense. Funny thing is, 3 weeks ago, his father surprised him with a trip to East Lansing to watch MSU-Rutgers (which, meh as a gift) as a reward for winning the state title.
-

He has signed by reports. I think he's flipping because of Fields.
-
For OSU, very interesting. QB Dwan Mathis may have flipped to Georgia. Hmmm.
Thought that might put OSU back in play for Dobbs. Rumors were that Mathis is not particularly well liked, and Dobbs (his former teammate) commitment to MSU (after being recently seen as an OSU lean) days after Mathis flipped from MSU to OSU was not viewed as a coincidence in most circles.
-
If UGA doesn't win an NC in the next 3-4 years, all this recruiting will be for naught. But of course there is another program standing in their way that also is recruiting lights out.
They look to be flat loaded next season.

Hard to read at this point. Some rumor that Mathis wanted to enroll early but might have an issue due to grades. So he commits to Georgia despite never having visited Georgia. Of course, the "grade issues" might be a smokescreen for "a transferring QB." Also, this is the fourth team Mathis has committed to, so tough to trust his camp either.

Looks like Hill flipped back to Michigan
signed with Michigan. That’s freaking huge. Instant day 1 starter and by far the best safety prospect that Michigan has landed in years. He’s so athletic he could actually wind up at CB. I’d prefer him at safety though just because Don Brown is obsessed with playing man coverage.
-
The Badgers got 19 today, and 4 will enroll early, including Leo Chenel. I'm thinking the kid will see a lot of field time next season. Just wait until he hits the Wisconsin strength program.

Despite a late push from Clemson, Jimmy Fritzsche chooses UNL. Don't care about the 3 star rating. Clemson has had an eye for talent and imo, this is a big win.

Zach Harrison does indeed choose the Buckeyes

This is probably non-news to most of y'all, but I'm actually pretty stoked about this one.
Iowa just landed 3-star RB Shadrick Byrd this morning. His other P5 offers included Duke, UNC, Tennessee, Vandy, Louisville, and Wake Forest.
What makes this kid special (to me, at least)? He played for Thompson High School - the same school system my daughter attends. I'll be cheering extra hard for him. I hope he plays with a huge chip on his shoulder since neither Bama nor Auburn gave him the time of day.
Also, the Hawks picked up Yahweh Jeudy at LB. In case you're wondering, he's Jerry Jeudy's cousin. He was originally a K-State commit, but flipped to Iowa due to coaching turmoil.
-

Riley shoulda offered. It ain't stealing if there isn't one. (Frost was too late to the party.)
-
feels like stealing to me
-
I don't view it like that. Lots of kids leave Wisconsin without offers from the home school - good for them. No harm there.
I'd love to see Nate Stanley in red, but Gerry didn't offer him and Chryst was too late with his. Oh well. I'm not gonna blame Kirk for that one.
-

Yep, and we should have offered Harrison Phillips too, back in Pelini's day. But hey, who needs a D1 DT prospect right in your own backyard?
Not us, no sir! Never you mind those 405 rushing yards...

My favorite Bo story is having an OC say the TE is an outdated position in CF.... yet you have a TE coach on your staff.
btw.. don't forget Ott who went to Iowa. slight mistake that was obvious to the "fans".

#39th ranked player overall in the 247Composite, 4* ATH Quavaris Crouch (6’2, 230 lbs) from North Carolina announcing his decision tonight at 6:30pm. Sounds like it’s down to Tennessee and Michigan, and he might be leaning Tennessee. Weird as hell seeing as how Michigan and Clemson were his top 2 for oh, I don’t know, forever? Michigan has been the one constant in his recruitment though. So maybe there’s hope? But it sounds like it’ll be Tennessee.
How in the hell is Tennessee beating Michigan for all these recruits? Yeah I get it, Michigan isn’t getting over that hump with Harbaugh but they are still winning 10 games a year basically. Tennessee? A certifiable dumpster fire that just won its first SEC game in like 5 years.

Less selling, more buying.
As in, their buyers are more desperate than Michigan's at the moment. Also, Pruitt is a good recruiter. Probably scuzzy, and therefore great at it.

(Council Bluffs) -- Nebraska picked up a commitment from Iowa Western center Josh Wegener on Thursday.
Wegener - the No. 1 ranked junior college center by JCGridiron.com - announced on social media he was committing to the Huskers.
The 6-foot-2, 280 pound Wegener had multiple Division II offers out of high school before picking Iowa Western. He played five games at defensive tackle for the Reivers in 2017 and then moved to the offensive line last spring.
Wegener also had a walk-on opportunity at Iowa State and turned down full scholarships from several lower-level schools.

Nebraska has officially signed long-time running back commit Dedrick Mills out of Garden City (Kan.) Community College.
The 5-foot-11, 200-pound JUCO transfer had been committed to the Huskers since early September, but did not initially sign with NU on the early signing day on December 19. Questions about whether Mills would be a part of Nebraska's signing class quickly arose. In the weeks that followed the early signing day, Mills told HuskerOnline.com that he was hopeful to sign with NU before January 15 and that he planned to be in Lincoln this summer. Any questions about that can now be laid to rest since he has inked his letter of intent with the Big Red.
The Georgia native originally signed with Georgia Tech out of high school in 2016 and went on to rush for over 700 yards and scored 12 touchdowns for the Yellowjackets en route to earning Freshman All-American honors.
...................
The Huskers now have signed 25 prospects since the early signing date including Oklahoma State defensive lineman graduate transfer Darrion Daniels.

2018’s CFB teams whose results most differed from recruiting rankings
The eight biggest underachievers, based strictly on four-year recruiting ranking and S&P+ finish
Why eight? Because that’s a natural cutoff based on the pure rankings differences for all the teams. Context follows below.
Florida State (4th in recruiting, 84th in S&P+, 5-7)
Louisville (32nd in recruiting, 111th in S&P+, 2-10)
UCLA (15th in recruiting, 92nd in S&P+, 3-9)
Tennessee (13th in recruiting, 88th in S&P+, 5-7)
North Carolina (27th in recruiting, 95th in S&P+, 2-9)
Oregon State (60th in recruiting, 124th in S&P+, 2-10)
(tie) Arkansas (31st in recruiting, 94th in S&P+, 2-10), and Rutgers (53rd in recruiting, 116th in S&P+, 1-11)

HONOLULU – Noa Pola-Gates announced his commitment to Nebraska on Saturday night at the Polynesian Bowl and became the latest Arizona-based player headed to Lincoln in the 2019 class.
The four-star defensive back from Gilbert (Ariz.) Williams Field took all five official visits during the recruiting process and picked the Cornhuskers over finalists Arizona State and USC, where his cousin, Isaiah Pola-Mao, is a sophomore safety.
Pola-Gates told 247Sports that the staff in Lincoln made him feel at home despite the fact that he’s leaving the West Coast for college. Pola-Gates actually signed with Nebraska during the first signing period, and he was officially announced by the Nebraska football program late on Saturday evening.
Nebraska landed two other Arizona-based prospects — four-star defensive end Ty Robinson and three-star defensive back Javin Wright — in the early signing period.
There is another player from the Grand Canyon State that the Cornhuskers are pushing for heading into national signing day next month — Chandler three-star defensive tackle Matthew Pola-Mao, who is the cousin of Pola-Gates.
-
Frosty's looking pretty good on the trail this year.
-
yup, encouraging
just need some wins and momentum
Pretty sure you and Mrs. 847 should start planning your November trip to Lincoln
-
The Saturday night commitment of Arizona defensive back Noa Pola-Gates moved Nebraska into the Top-20 of the 247Sports Composite rankings.
Pola-Gates pledged to the Huskers in the first half of the Polynesian Bowl in Hawaii, and the four-star’s commitment moved Nebraska up three spots from No. 22 in the industry-generated rankings to No. 20 in the rankings, just tenths of a point behind Stanford for No. 19 in the rankings.
The Arizona defensive back is the seventh four-star recruiting to commit to Nebraska’s 2019 recruiting class, and is the fourth-highest recruit in Nebraska’s class according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
Nebraska is firmly entrenched in the No. 4 spot in the Big Ten recruiting rankings behind Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State. Nebraska finished in the No. 4 spot in the Big Ten last year in Frost’s first recruiting class, and No. 23 overall the 247Sports Composite rankings that year.

-
For two reasons, Josh Wegener’s decision to walk on to the Nebraska football team carries more intrigue than most.
First, the Iowa Western standout was named the No. 1 junior-college center in the nation by JCGridiron.com. Additionally, the Huskers through the years have avoided Reiver players like the plague. (The only other one to land in Lincoln is reserve offensive lineman Brian Perez, who spent 2017 in Council Bluffs as a reserve tight end.)
The Iowa Western coaches believe Wegener, a 6-foot-2, 300-pound Algona, Iowa, native, is well-equipped to handle the scrutiny.
-
Wonder if Notre Dame or some other big boys are going to come sniffing around MSU WR commit Alante Brown. He was a 2* kid with offers from Cincinnati, Minnesota and MAC schools when MSU offered over the summer, got bumped to 4* by 247 today.
He didn't sign due to academics, and now there are rumors MSU pulled his offer.
If true, that means MSU lost the two best offensive weapons commits in the class.

That's an interesting statement. UNL has never had great success in Chicago. NJ has been much better to the program than Chicago. I've always assumed it was a BIG10/ND city and players rarely looked outside.
-
Nope. I think in the past 20 years, UW has had maybe 2 players from the public league. There were some others from Chicago (including one this past season), but they were private school kids.
Chicago schools get bashed for a reason. They deserve it.

Yup. Wtf is Tennessee selling? I don’t get it. Pruitt is a complete unknown coming off a 5-7 season.
I think Tenn is 7th ranked among SEC teams at 247 at 15th. To the extent that translates into a final record down the line, it would be 9-4ish.
Of course, if recruiting rankings translated, the final rankings each year would be a bit different.
-
UW offered a California TE named Mark Redman on his visit over the weekend. No word on whether or not the NCAA will force him to change his offensive surname.
-
Was just looking at the kid's offers and got curious about Michigan. Michigan has 251 offers out for 2020 already. That's obscene.
OSU has 151 out. UW has 101.

Harbaugh needs some help

So does Frosty, apparently. He's got 252 offers out for 2020.

"Obscene?" Some people use that word to imply that something is certainly bad, all bad, zero good. How do you mean it here? It's just a weird word to use.
-

It's definitely a tough business, not all butterflies and flower petals. And "bad optics" fits this story. But he suspected this when the coaches refused his signature in December, and it's clear that none of these scholarship offers mean when they did in the 1970s. Now, Michigan's "scholarship offers" are conditional on continuing to meet certain standards (academics, citizenship, and - admittedly cutthroat but also making good sense - by staying above certain football cutoffs). And no one who's hit all those conditions has ever been cut. It also has to be that way if you're offering 250+ of them for 25 spots. And offering that many is increasingly common in a post-smart phone/-social media era.
-
"Obscene?" Some people use that word to imply that something is certainly bad, all bad, zero good. How do you mean it here? It's just a weird word to use.
I think he's saying that UW is wearing a miniskirt, OSU is wearing a string bikini, and by comparison Michigan is a Tijuana donkey show.
-
Shocking. Outrageous.
-
I'm with Badge. That is ridiculous to have that many offers out this early in the process.
-
I'm just not a fan of line in the sand thinking. And no one has ever restricted their recruiting to 25 circulating offers for a 25-man class, waiting to offer new guys only after one of the circulating offers is turned down. And everything past that is a continuum (whether 100 offers or 1,000). When it comes to continuums, lines in the sand are only drawn arbitrarily and out of convenience.
And this one can be communicated dispassionately and without drawing a line: "Michigan is probably a standard deviation from the national average."
-
It's a load of BS. What if 250 kids called Michigan today and wanted to commit? Hell, what if 100 called Madison and wanted to commit?
I think there should be a rule as to how many "offers" a school can put out there. Maybe twice as many as spots available??
-
They can put out ten million offers if they want. Just don't lie to recruits and put them in bad positions.
-
Any offer over the number of spots available is a lie. That's the problem here. What I really have a problem with is taking an early commit (like, now) and then telling the kid in December that there is no room. That is so wrong, on so many levels.
-
Has anyone ever seen the actual wording of a written offer? I imagine it is contingent, no?

Michigan published an example a few years back. There were three contingencies - citizenship, academics ... and still being good enough at football (worded in terms of sufficient and nonstop improvement).
-
Vague contingencies make offers almost irrelevant, almost as irrelevant as the verbal commitment by some 16 year old player.
I'm sure it's a thrill for a junior (or younger) to get an offer letter, but the "fine print" obviously makes it more of an expression of possible potential could be interest, perhaps.

Just like fractional reserve banking!

4* OL Doug Nester from WV flips from OSU to WVU
MSU signed its lone late commit, WR Tre'Von Morgan from OH.
A much quieter day than this used to be

I am slightly amused at how folks stress over whether their 247 number is really 304.79 or 305.11.
Two significant figures past the decimal? Really?

When it's such an exact science as starz, 2 decimals can mean everything.

How much real difference is there between finishing 1st and 5th, or even 10th? Probably some in terms of numbers of 5 starz.
I figure if you're top ten, you should be in good shape, but you might not play that out when it comes to the season (duh). That five star guy might only give you 2 years of production, if that.

Probably not much. Just like you grab any two given recruits, I'm guessing there's not much difference. The difference comes in those top classes stacking highly rated guys. Any given 3* guy could be just as good, but the odds are obviously lower. You load up classes with 4* and 5* guys, even if you miss on half of them (which seems high), you still have more highly rated kids than a class loaded with 3* kids. That's why I never get too high or too low over any singular recruit, I think that is an inexact science, but because it's such an inexact science, I think the value is in the quantity of highly rated kids, not a make or break kid here or there.

That sums it up pretty well.

WR from Oklahoma signs with the huskers.

UGA signed the top two ranked recruits from the state of Alabama in what is an obvious twist.

Exactly. Double that with the fact that football is a team sport. I don't care if you have a 100* running back, if he's behind an unrated OL and a QB and WR crew that can't throw or catch, that RB is going to get killed behind the LOS on nearly every play.
The more highly rated kids you have at ALL positions, the generally more talented your overall roster will be. Which means if some of them are busts [as some will inevitably be], you still have more talent on the field than a team that is trying to "coach up" and "develop" 3* and unrated recruits.
-
I think that's easy to agree with. Could even go further: don't the majority of fans, even of recruitniks, see it that way - treating recruiting as a probabilistic contest (rather than as an individual-by-individual destiny)?
The most common arguments for recruiting rankings mattering are peppered with words like "in aggregate" and "more likely."

Thanks for chasing that down badge. It includes a couple contingencies, but this was the language I had in mind: "We expect you to continue to strive for excellence as a student and as an athlete; this scholarship should serve as motivation towards continued growth, not as an excuse to become complacent."
-
I would have expected more weasel words, actually.

MSU WR commit Jace Bowen, who was one of the best athletes in the class, decided to sign with the Pirates instead, after getting drafted in the MLB Draft last week.
Ugh. Between the RB who flipped to Rutgers and this, MSU lost a lot of speed to some unexpected places.

Ronald Thompkins has met his academic requirements and is planning to arrive in Nebraska on Friday to begin his next chapter, according to Kenyatta Watson Sr., a mentor and one of his former coaches.
The Husker running back signee worked hard in recent months to nail down the needed standardized test score to fully qualify and come to Lincoln this June. A Nebraska spokesman later confirmed the news to Husker247.
"He was only one point way. He was close. Very close. We got him into an ACT prep class for the last four months. He took the class. He was diligent. He got it done," Watson said on Wednesday night. "I'm ecstatic, man, because the kid means so much to me outside of football. He's always had a really tough upbringing, man. And he's just such an unbelievable kid. He never complains. Everything is always, 'Yes, sir' or 'No, sir.' He never looked at what someone else's situation was like and said, 'I wish I had that.' He always grinned through whatever."
That included staying positive even after a torn ACL last fall for the second time in as many seasons for the prospect from Grayson High School in Loganville, Georgia. Already a Husker commit at the time, Thompkins asked one of his coaches after the injury, "Is Nebraska going to drop me?"
The Huskers assured Thompkins in quick order they were standing by him.
Now as the all-purpose running back comes to Lincoln, Watson said Thompkins does it without showing any clear sign of the injury, and carries 205 pounds on his 5-11 frame. "He looks friggin' great. It's just a testament to his work ethic and who he is."

At least Adam Berghorst turned down being drafted by the Rangers to enroll at MSU

Apparently he has flipped now to MSU?
The rumors were that he didn't qualify, had enrolled at a JUCO, but then had that overturned, and somehow enrolling at the JUCO he never attended released him from his letter, and he was free to sign at MSU?

After months of speculation, a once SEC-bound defensive lineman confirmed Wednesday that he will follow through on his most recent commitment.
Jahkeem Green is headed to Nebraska.
The 6-foot-5, 315-pound lineman originally told Husker coaches his intentions during his official visit for the spring game. But while finishing up online class work that kept his decision from becoming binding, Green — who has long been open about wanting to play in the South — officially visited Texas Tech in July in a trip he posted about on social media.
Meanwhile, the quiet big man declined to respond to update requests from reporters and only spoke to those who visited him in Kansas. The silence lasted until Wednesday, when he messaged back one word — “Nebraska” — to multiple outlets, including The World-Herald.
Nebraska players report Thursday before fall camp begins Friday. It’s unclear whether Green will be academically eligible this season but Highland assistant Judd Remmers said he will report to Nebraska in a week to 10 days.
Green spent the past two years at Highland (Kan.) Community College and finished up the last of his classes this week from his home in Sumter, South Carolina. He will have three seasons to play two.
Green — the sixth-ranked junior college defensive lineman in the 2019 cycle according to 247Sports — made 49 tackles (four for loss) as a freshman nose tackle and 67 (seven for loss) last fall at end.

He didn't sign due to academics, and now there are rumors MSU pulled his offer.
If true, that means MSU lost the two best offensive weapons commits in the class.
Well, MD took a lot of heat for this decision, and it was announced today that he didn't qualify at Texas Tech and is going JUCO, so I guess he knew what he was doing here after all
