Although I'll be watching the fighting Fickells in Nippert taking on Chip Kelly and UCLA. About to kick.
-
Good looking drive for UCLA ends when their QB forces a fumble on himself
-
Touchdown Bearcats!
-
Hi Sam try to chime in with the Browns on
-
I could have lived without the refs flagging the kid for UCLA for spinning the ball on the turf after a big pick.
-
Kellen Mond looks REALLY good
-
watching this Clemson vs GT game just to see Trevor Lawrence. Clemson up 21-0 already with 12 mins left in the 2nd QTR and Lawrence really hasn't done anything. Hasn't had too. Etienne has put on a show running the football. He's running wild all over Tech's defense. This game is going to be 35-0 or 35-7 by half. I'm pretty close to just shutting it off.

speaking of Trevor Lawrence- he just threw a really bad INT that would've been a pick 6- but Lawrence hauled his ass to make the tackle at the 2 yard line to prevent the TD. Lawrence has got some wheels for a 6-6, 220+ QB. He definitely isn't just a pocket passer. He can really run.
-
Turn on the Bearcats
UCLA sucks. Plus, I really don't like Chip Kelly. I was way more interested in watching Trevor Lawrence, but Clemson has basically just been killing Georgia Tech. It's not even a competition. Kinda boring game to watch. Lawrence just made a poor throw and Tech looks like they might score. Hopefully this turns into a game.

Turn on the gophers
-
Bearcats take down UCLA again, face the buckeyes next
-
UCLA really seems to have wasted talent. Devin Asiasi was on track at Michigan to be perhaps the best inline TE in Michigan history. And perhaps had the best start for any variety of TE. I was blown away by him as a TrFr -- especially his *blocking*. At UCLA, he's a shell. What a bummer.
-
I am entering the season bullish on Minnesota. This game is giving me slight pause. Not out of snark but just to remind me of context (UW injuries or playcalling): how again did Minnesota whallop Wisconsin last year -- and, specifically, why did Taylor get so few carries?
-
Asu has some nice playmakers for this true freshman QB to play with. Kent st looks hot, out of shape and it's early.
-
It's a good thing this is a 1-AA club they're playing against. Gophers are a work in progress...
-
I see UT is blacked out to start the season.
-
I probably shouldn't be surprised in retrospect how close the Minnesota - South Dakota State game was. They've been similarly strong in basketball as in football.... That said, it does downgrade my opinion of Minnesota.
I know they had a similar struggle with Buffalo last year (my bad that was two years ago when they were both mediocre, but my point still stands), but I think them beating Fresno State again would be an upset at this point.....
-
Yikes.
Might want to give the Terps a zero win season if they can't even beat Minnesota this year, after completely dominating them last year, without decent QB play.
-
I wouldn't overreact one way or another.
-
I wouldn't overreact one way or another.
Agreed. Week 2 improvements are a thing and can be incredible. To beat FrSU they'll have to get a good chunk of that
-
Whew.
Game lacked any aesthetic value but it got the job done.
-
Also, once you get past the FCS designation, South Dakota State is probably better than most Week 1 opponents the Big Ten is facing.
Sagarin, who combines FBS and FCS into one ranking, had them #58 to finish last year. Some teams around them? Starting at #56 it went Maryland, Vandy, South Dakota State, Cal, Wake Forest, Temple, Baylor, BYU, VT, Arizona, Indiana, Florida State. We wouldn't be poo pooing a close win against any of those teams, and IIRC, both Temple and BYU, teams worse than South Dakota State, scored wins over Big Ten schools last year
-
UCLA really seems to have wasted talent.
Talent AND potential. Recruits in UCLA’s backyard are instead going to Oregon, Washington, Notre Dame, and whoever else raises their hand. Just an embarrassing showing to blow both games of their series Vs the AAC conference with Chip Kelly as your coach.
-
I see UT is blacked out to start the season.
No problem getting them here.
On the other hand, Rutgers, Maryland, and even Penn State and Michigan are blacked out in week 1. Seems like an odd decision by the B1G not to put any of those games on television.
-
Not sure what to make of Minny. SDSU is a strong team, but Minny did get outgained. Minny was pretty inconsistent last year so tough to get a read on them from one game.
-
The Gophers lost to the other South Dakota in 2010.
Brewster lost to a team from each of the Dakotas as HC.
-
the Jacks are a fine team and would give many B1G teams a run in week 1
don't overreact Gopher fans
entertaining game
I feel it's much better for your team to win a close game than to walk through a blowout win in the first or second game
I'm actually hoping the Huskers have it a little rough tomorrow and do not cover the spread
keeps kids humble and working hard to get better
-
SDSU is a strong FCS team but they aren't JMU or NDSU.
NDSU has a legit chance of beating Oregon in Autzen next year. The Bison aren't intimidated at all - they're basically Boise State with a power offense.
-
On an aside, I don't ever want to see the Dakota schools on the Gopher docket again.
-

I hear ya. I feel the same way abut Maryland! :'(
-
That was a H.Y.P.R.R. win by a bunch of ELITE nektons. Row the Boat.
Hopefully the declining Badgers can do the same tonight.

Eh, they aren't NDSU, but they are right there with JMU and EWU in that 2nd tier of FCS

The MVFC is in a class all by itself. It's probably comparable to CUSA despite the reduced number of schollies.
I'd like to see how the SEC would fare if they scheduled some MVFC schools. I think a lot of SEC fans would find themselves in for a rude awakening.
-

Not sure what you mean by blacked out. You later clarified as not on television. But I'm confused. Michigan is obviously on television tomorrow.

Ha so snarky. On the last page, I was wondering how UW got blown out by Minnesota. Taylor should have a field day versus a defense of this vintage but last year he only got 19 touches.
-
The next UW 14 game win streak starts this year.
RTB
-

QB play was terrible, the DL was decimated by injury, and team chemistry was for shit.
-
Not sure what you mean by blacked out. You later clarified as not on television. But I'm confused. Michigan is obviously on television tomorrow.
He was responding to the snark of Texas being buried on the LHN with the snark that he doesn't get BTN there.
-
If it's a TV competition, UT doesn't have much to go on.
-
I first saw Bevo TV last fall when I went to RRS, so I know it exists.
-
I'll be at a high school football game this evening, so keep me updated
-
Army not looking so good so far, so I'm feeling a lot better that Michigan will be able to get a lead and control the game against them. Rice is probably better than they were last year, but they'd be fortunate to finish in the middle of the CUSA standings and similarly had an early lead on Houston last year.
-
If it's a TV competition, UT doesn't have much to go on.
Ha! You might wanna double-check your facts. From the B1G, last year only Michigan-Ohio State beat out the top-ranked Texas showing. Did you suddenly become a Michigan or Ohio State fan while I wasn't watching? :86:
-
Not sure what you mean by blacked out. You later clarified as not on television. But I'm confused. Michigan is obviously on television tomorrow.
Not on my TV. *shrug*
-

I see ads for the BTN. But it's not on my TV. I guess it's on in yankee states? I really wouldn't know.
-
Say what you want about teams playing their smaller instate schools for revenue, but I guarantee Howard won't look as bad as Tulsa does.
-
Not hoping for Tulsa to win either, but I'm extremely happy to see them stop that BS 4th down play.
-

Don't move here we'll steal your Tito's

Although, I may be hoping for UMass to win.
Walt Bell is a cool dude.

Bastages score :cool2:
-
Army barely beat Rice.

Staying late at work to avoid coming in through the weekend, but I'm following Wisconsin and MSU through box scores.
For UW, Coan has an efficient stat line. For those watching at home, is the jump as obvious as you'd expect given these numbers? The run game seems in good shape at 5YPC and Taylor at 5.7. I take it the offensive line is as expected. And for the defense, it's hard to argue against these yardage totals. Looks like a nice start towards putting last year behind them.
For MSU, last year's dichotomy is coming through on this box score. Lewerke is under 5 YPA and the team is only averaging 3 YPC on the ground. There's a good chance they'll hold their opponent under 100 to 120 yards, though, which is a good step to meeting preseason expectations on D.

Michigan State's field continues to look spectacular on TV under the lights. Perfect lighting.
-

It and PSU have this in common.
-
LSU as well.
-
Just got home from a high school game. The Wiscy score is surprising.
-
I just got home from a football game as well. Seeing Tulsa has -63 yards rushing. How about that.
-
-72. That would be some doozy of a resident genius guess.
-
I think Wisconsin has this one.
-
I see that Tulsa is the same sort of team as last year. Good defense, lousy offense. They covered, right?
-
Ha, a guy w my rare surname with an Int. To seal things for Wake Forest.
-
T. Wallace an elite WR.
-
Purdue and Wiscy looking strong on the road
-
Though Purdue punt return really struggling
-
Though Purdue punt return really struggling
The first was just freak bad luck. Short punt, returner where the blockers couldn't expect him to be.
The second was just a horrible decision by Moore. His fault, and inexcusable.
-
USU lost to WF.
-
Nevada down 14 heading into the 4th quarter and facing 4th down. Thinking they should punt. It's been their best offensive play so far.
-
Mike Bobo looking old and limping makes me feel old. I remember him going near perfect against uw in one of those Fla bowls.
-
Tied. Purdue to get the ball with 52 seconds and 3 time outs.
-
Any particular reason they're playing at Nevada?
-
Any particular reason they're playing at Nevada?
Return game for a past game at Purdue.
-
Now I'm hoping for OT. F....
-
Damn. Hell of a boot.
-
Well ain't that some ish?
-
Typical Purdue bullchit.
Not going to beat anyone with 5 turnovers.
It would be easier to take if it wasn't happening for 3 years running.
-
Say what you want about teams playing their smaller instate schools for revenue, but I guarantee Howard won't look as bad as Tulsa does.
About that...
-
After what happened, I feel like this needs expanded on...this is just too good!
So as OAM rightfully asked, why is Purdue playing a season opener away game against a G5 team a few time zones to the west at an altitude with 15% less oxygen?
Well let me tell you. You see, our good ole former AD, Morgan Burke, was responsible for this.
Burke made arrangements for a home and home with Nevada to do a favor for a friend of his. Said friend has ties to Nevada.
Why, you might ask, did he do this favor? Well that friend was involved in the hiring process of...drumroll please...Darrell Hazell!! The worst coach in Purdue history. The coach that will take 5 full years to recover from.
Standing ovation please for Morgan Burke, who managed to help screw the football team over one last time from retirement.
Ok I'm done, but that did feel kinda good. :49:
-
Mike Bobo looking old and limping makes me feel old. I remember him going near perfect against uw in one of those Fla bowls.
Yeah, me too, he was a very solid QB. Hines Ward was on that team.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_Outback_Bowl
Georgia-Bobo 26-28-0-267, Ward 0-1-0-0.
Starting quarterback Mike Samuel completed 8-of-27 passes for 84
yards with two interceptions and was sacked four times.
-
About that...
You were supposed to move on from this....
Very disappointed all the way around.
Howard simply came to collect a check. I know nothing more now, than when I did before this game.
It was read option from them, botched punts, and a very vanilla offense from us. Really looked like 3 or 4 plays over and over.
-
How does Kansas follow up a 7 game against Coastal Carolina with a 28 point first half against BC?
-
Man how did that NC guy not run out of bounds?
-
My guy w my frequently misspelled last name held him up from going oob.
-
And BC handled VT.
-
And BC handled VT.
I feel like VT has fallen off the map almost completely. Michael Vick put them on the map, and now they're pretty much off it.
-
Washington St vs Houston finally getting good. My money is on the Cougars.

Beamer put them on the map

unexpected, but I like it

The State of New England FBS FB is pretty hilarious, between BC, UConn and UMass.

nice 4th and 1

The State of New England FBS FB is pretty hilarious, between BC, UConn and UMass.
people in New England couldn’t give a shit less about college football.
They are all about the Celtics, Red Sox, and Pats. College football doesn’t even register. Not on the map there. And really why would they care when they’ve got pro teams that good. All those pro teams have won titles in the last 15-20 years.
I honestly think a huge reason why Ohio State and Michigan have had such big fan bases is the pro football teams in their states have basically sucked ass for 60+ years. Lots of football fans from those states just said F this I’m out on the Browns or the Lions and I’m all in on the Buckeyes or Wolverines.
-
just thinking out loud here. If Tennessee looses to Chattanooga tomorrow could they go winless?
If they were to start out 0-3 the next 5 games are...
Florida
Georgia
MS State
Bama
South Carolina
I’d say they have no shot in hell to beat Florida, Georgia, or Bama- and very little shot to beat MS State and Scar. They’ll be 0-8 if they do not win tomorrow.
Then their last 4 games are UAB, Kentucky, Missouri, and Vandy. They could legitimately go 0-4 vs that stretch.
If they don’t win that game tomorrow- man oh man it could get real ugly.
-
I'd say the Vols are most likely going to finish the year 3-8. They'll win easily tomorrow and win 2 of 3 among USCe, UAB, and Vandy. Any other wins, for me, would be amazing.

Good Post NE didn't give two shyts about the Pats until they became good. Now oh ya Patriot Nation Rolls on - screw their fair weather fans

The Pirate has things ship-shape at 3-0

people flock to winners. also kinda helps that the Pats have been on a nearly 20 year run of dominance that has never been seen before and will never be seen again. They haven’t just been winning. They’ve been the best dynasty we’ve ever seen in the NFL. Truly amazing how great that team has been with B&B for 18+ years.
-
Beamer put them on the map
I don’t know. They were kinda nobody before Vick got there. His amazing freshman season and that performance against FSU in the national title game put them on the map. Vick was sensational. He was that entire team- they really had no one. He led them to back to back 11-1 seasons. Would’ve been fricken amazing to watch Vick play for a helmet with loads of talent around him in a modern style spread read option offense. Still to this day the most exciting QB to watch play the game. He could flat out do things that no one else could do. He’s right up there with Randy Moss, Barry Sanders, Dan Marino, Aaron Rodgers, and Calvin Johnson in terms of just pure talent and raw ability imo.
-

They had a pair of AA DEs and Kevin Jones was really good. They were on the map before Vick, he just elevated them to a whole other level.
-
yup, well educated CFB fans knew about Beamer ball before Vick
Vick brough the slackers
-

Kevin Jones was after Vick. And he was the #1 RB and #1 player in the nation in his class. And the only reason VT ever landed him was because of Vick. He idolized Vick. He wore a freaking Vick jersey underneath his Penn State jersey at his signing. I still remeber that. It was one of the great troll jobs of all time. #1 player and #1 RB in the nation from Pennsylavnia trolling his hometown school like that. Incredible.

I have a hard time believing we'll have a better ending than Tulane-Houston all year

Sounded great on the radio too.

I went to bed and I haven’t seen it yet. Woke up to a text from a friend that said, “New colors, new DC, same old Holgorsen.” Some WVU fans are having a field day on their message boards.
-
Yeah that was... something else. I have some friends that are Houston fans and I feel bad for them, but then again, maybe I don't. :)

USC and the Utes trading TDs early.
The Utes might be in a little bit of trouble here. They don't generally match up too well vs the SoCal twins, even when they are down.
-
Those Trojans WRs are so good. QB tosses it up and they do the rest. 2nd long TD grab in the endzone by USC up 14-7.
-
FG attempt similar to UNL
low and unsuccessful
-
Story of this game is:
USC WRs > Utah DBs
-
Yeah, the LA duo really has to try in order to lose to any of the Mountain Time Zone quartet within their Pac South division. They harbor way more raw talent on their rosters, even when they otherwise suck.

urban meyer is gonna luv it there

We are writing their HC's obituary, the day after he knocked off a top 10 team?

Some Friday night action. Though my wife off loaded the kids so I may get dragged out the house

Va Tech's defense looked good, and then the turnover and short field
Duke with 7

On the bright side, after this you get a nice cool breeze of a slate with Rutgers, Purdue, Indiana, Minnesota and The Wolverines.

+ the refs.
-
Did I just hear Friedgen say Franklin was a little flashier than Locksley but more sincere? I was folding laundry and only half paying attention but that’s what it sounded like. That’s a strange comment if that is what he said. I’d love to know what that means.
-
The Terps just had two calls go their way in a row. No intentional grounding, and a block in the back on the return.
-
I had a bet with myself Terps would be on here griping about the refs. I won.
-
Meanwhile, in Blacksburg...
Duke 30
VT 3
Yikes.
-
Three in a row.
Maybe the Leos are still paying their Big Ten dues.
-
Maryland going from Alabama to Rutgers in three games

Good job Farva.
There was no grounding. McFarland was there for a screen.

And the first project from Maryland’s recently canned AD, Kevin Anderson, when he was hired, was to run off the Fridge AND Gary Williams. The most successful basketball and football coaches Maryland had. Moron.
-
It's an Ohio State WR pulling down a DB, and is getting called for PI, or a halo call on a returner when no one is 2 yards of the guy, or PSU grabbing the facemask of our QB, which destroys timing, and no call.
The refs are trash.
1st two games were different refs.
Temple game was B1G refs.

Ran off Bear Bryant too.

38-0 blow out at half. it must be the refs, and only the refs. Why does Maryland even bother to show up if it's predetermined the refs are going to score 70 for their opponent, and not allow the turtle to get 100 yards...

Pretty sure they're obligated.
And of course, it's not "only the refs".
Literally no one said that.

Just waiting for basketball season, where all the pressure is put on a skinny kid who will falter like Justin Jackson.

I only flipped through a couple times since it was a blowout. The announcers kept referring to this presumed dislike or animosity between Frankling and Locksley. What;s the story or background on that?
Just because they were both assts for MD at one point?

Franklin was promoted to "Head Coach in Waiting" but them passed over. He left there with some bad blood.

Sometimes I wonder how many national championships Maryland would have if they had fair officiating...
Maybe 9? 10? This century alone at least.

Lol. In his defense he’s always super critical of the coaching and players too but he really can’t help himself with the officiating. I think every fanbase has a faction that is convinced their team gets more bad whistles than others. I know there are a few on WVU’s message board that have personal hard ons for the refs every game.
-
Generally Penn St and Michigan are the fan bases that are most notorious for pinning all of their losses on the zebras.
Neither school has ever lost a game fair and square.

Not a good start to my pool.

Look, fouls happen. I'm fair about it, but McFarland falling down on a play getting called for Chop block, a tackle that ends up going around the back of a helmet being a 15-yard penalty and extending a drive, a pass interference that was weak to be mild, and you just can't help it.
There have been way too many blatant crazy calls that make no sense, and that usually help the other team extend drive or change of possession, or change momentum.
There are plenty of times where I say, yeah that was pass interference, but too many times it's not.
This team has the same problems. The offensive line can never seem to get it together. I'm not a fan of starting Jackson over Piggy. I think piggy has a better chance with his legs to make a play Then Jackson does. And the unfair thing for him is, they throw him in in the middle of a bad game to "create a spark", but then he looks bad trying to get into a rhythm when the other teams already in a rhythm.
Then, the defense suffers because they're on the field the entire game and then they look bad.
It's frustrating when your team's not good, with all the talent that's on the team, but it's even worse when the officials make it that more difficult with BS calls.
-
Michigan should play Rutgers every week. Maybe then Harbaugh could get his team to Indy.
-
Look, fouls happen.

All I’m saying is the next time I meet a fan who says, “Honestly, my team gets favorable whistles most of the time” it will be the first. It’s just human nature. Fans dwell on the bad (or perceived bad) calls that go against their team and gloss over the ones that go in their favor.
On more than one occasion I’ve pulled quotes from WVU’s message boards during a basketball game and then pulled quotes from our opponent’s message board for the same game. You wonder how they can even be seeing the same game. Both factions railing against the officiating screaming how they are getting screwed.
Also keep in mind that you have seen every bad (or perceived bad) call that has went against Maryland in the last what, 5, 10, 15, 20 years? You see enough and you start thinking that their games are uniquely officiated. But every team in the country has fans who think their games are uniquely officiated.
-
Generally Penn St and Michigan are the fan bases that are most notorious for pinning all of their losses on the zebras.
Neither school has ever lost a game fair and square.
In our (Penn State) we usually bitch in close games and not blow outs. I’ll never forgive Lloyd Carr getting two seconds “added” to the 2005 game.
-
Yeah, I would tend not to fault the zebras for a blow out loss.
Every fan sees calls in every game that go against their team. They see very few that go for their team. It's part of being a fan.
But then again, maybe the refs have it in for some team for whatever reason and really want to favor their opponent to get a blowout. It's possible.
-
it's possible
blowout or tight game

This Cincy UCf game is good. UCF moved the ball in the first half but couldn't score much. The Bearcats controlled the third quarter
-
The Bearcats are up 11 in the 4th. At home.
-
jinx

Down goes UCF!
-
I’m too tipsy to post correctly, but what Cincy social media posted was cruel and wonderful.

WOW,didn't see that, the Fighting Fickels just helped the Ryan Day Trippers SoS.Thanx.Ha! one guy said UCF stands for Under Cincis Foot
-
Supposedly Fickell was offered and turned down the West Virginia gig over the off season. That's sorta surprising if true. He has at least a million kids, so I can see why he wouldn't want to just up and move across the country every year. But a P5 in a neighboring state? How do you pass that up.
-
Some think that if MD steps down in EL Fickell may be asked.Perhaps or maybe Tressel's brother.Hopefully MD doesn't hang it up
-
He'd probably be interested in that job, as his career path has already mirrored Dantonio's to this point.
Not saying he'd be offered, but I imagine he could be sold on the Michigan job, as Bo Schembechler was also an OSU assistant that cut his teeth at a D1 school in Southwest Ohio.
As a Catholic, Notre Dame would be an obvious temptation. But, once again, would they want him?
West Virginia would be a lot better than Kentucky or Pitt, as far as nearby choices go.
Or maybe he is content with simply trying to build Cincinnati up into something bigger than it is.

There were rumors about Louisville and Maryland too.
Im hoping he's waiting for MSU to open up next year?
-
Fickell is going to be on the HOT SEAT post season.

Decent enough Friday night game, though it's supposed to be rainy and cool and the Breaking Bad movie comes out so I might Netflixing it tonight

Between travel and having the kids, my wife and I haven't been to our little wine bar in over 6 weeks. So that's on the schedule for tonight, followed by coming home to make veggie lasagna stuffed portobello mushrooms (https://www.skinnytaste.com/veggie-lasagna-stuffed-portobello/) for dinner, since we're trying to do the low-carb thing.
But I'm guessing the UVA/MIA game is going to go on when we get home, and if that gets boring, switch over to Buffs/Ducks.
The good thing for me is that Pac 12 After Dark actually starts at 7:00 PM locally, so I don't have to stay up to the wee hours like you east coasters if it's a good game.
-
After last night, a few things to break right to make my Syracuse to the CFP pick come true

While I'm sure there are some coaches who love being the royal family of their small town I don't think that holds true for everyone. When you are very well paid the relative anonymity you get by being a coach in a city is underrated.
Either that or maybe the buyout (and WVU was on a downswing) was too low.

More than?

West Virginia has 11 power five teams on the schedule through 2024. And there aren’t a lot of creampuffs in that group. That is going to be a hard job for a while.

Hmm. Hadn’t heard that. The story that I heard was Fickell and Brown were the top two choices. President Gordon Gee favored Fickell because he knew him from his days at Ohio St. AD Shane Lyons wanted Brown. Fickell had some reservations because there wasn’t a Catholic school in Morgantown for his kids to attend. Gee has also said Brown was one of the best interviews he ever sat in on.
He may have been offered but that’s the first I heard that. Fickell has done a really nice job at UC but my personal pick out of the gate was Brown. I’m sure Fickell will have a P5 job pretty soon regardless of what really happened with WVU.

With Yankees-Astros getting oushed to Friday, they are bumping the Bucks from FS1 to BTN

Big Jim didn't really think through this whole Friday Night Lights thing, did he?

MDot likes to talk about Jim Harbaugh being on meds.
I think he's got the wrong Jim. The last 5-6 years of his decisions have been... not good.
-
Glad I'm not named Jim
-
Not like it won't be televised.

BTN probably better than FS1
the NLCS on TBS looked terrible last night, not 4K quality fer sure
Stoopid Cardinals

Not for national exposure. Anyone with cable or dish gets FS1.
-
I have cable, actually IPTV on fiber. The resolution was crap. Must have been the satellite feed from the ball park
-
Everyone has FS1 on basic? That's great, but expensive
-
I get FS1 and FS2 on the same tier that ESPN and ESPN2 are on. I don't get BTN.
Down here in Texico we've always tried to avoid Friday night games to keep from stepping on the toes of the high school coaches. They have a lot of say about where their highly prized recruits end up going, so the universities have attempted to tread lightly when it comes to their sacred Friday nights.
-
Personally I am glad the B1G got burned on this one. Friday night is for High School football. They should be ashamed of themselves for making a TV money grab.
-
I don't se how the day of the week is particularly relevant here. It is not as though they don't play baseball games on Saturdays.
-

Agree 100 percent.
Friday: HS
Saturday: CFB
Sunday: WWEFL
-
HS FB won't be a major issue in Ohio.
The HS FB games generally kick off at 7:pm, have 12 minute quarters (iirc) and no mediot time outs.
The Buckeyes don't go on until 8:30. So if you have the forsight to put the TV on the right channel and hit pause, you should be able to make it home in time to watch the game in its entirety, skip all the commercials, and catch up to real time before the conclusion of the contest.
It will be a bigger deal for Northwestern fans of course, with the hour difference.
-
There are probably more OSU fans in this area than there are NU fans.
Recruits from Texas or Florida or Jersey or PA or Georgia or California are not watching OSU on Friday night.
-
for some folks, high school football, Div II football, P5 football, and NFL football are all very important
for most folks, they gravitate towards high school, college or Pro
many P5 fans don't care much about high school

This P5 fan cares about high school because he teaches at one.
But he doesn't care much at all about the NFL.
-
yup, I'm not a high school teacher
kids have been out of high school for years, no connection
I'd rather have a college game on Friday night to watch
-
I haven't been to a HS game in years. And my old HS is generally pretty good, and just a few exits away.

I haven't been to a high school game... Since high school.
-
I make it to one or two HS games per year. My community is a suburb of Austin but has a small-town outlook, and the high school is very central to it. It's one of the things I like about living here. My friends and neighbors have kids on the team, in the band, cheerleading, drill-teaming, etc. and we like to support them. My daughter is in middle school band and cheerleads, and my son plays youth football, so someday they might be on that same field.

This was me...until I married a teacher. We used to work "crowd control" at the HS games in our mid 20s, pre-kids. It was nice, hang out at a football game, you were done by 9:30 and still had a Friday night, make $50.
Then we didn't go for a few years, now our kids like watching the district we live in play. It's very different in Western PA from Michigan. Nobody went to high school football games in Ann Arbor unless you were in high school, or had a son on the team. It's a community thing here. Not like Texas where small towns shut down, but there's tailgating, full stands, etc... Our school is probably moving up a classification next year, they are 8-0 this year, and we tried to go a couple weeks ago, which (by chance) was against the other (at the time) undefeated team in the conference. We couldn't get seats, and had to sit in the temporary bleachers they put up in the end zone to meet demand.

that's great, really
but, if the Horns happened to play a game on Friday night, you wouldn't be bothered much
I've just never understood the problem with a few college football games on Friday night. This week it looks like the number is 4.
It's not good for recruiting to a home game, but neither are morning games on Saturday

It's not whether or not a college game conflicts with a HS game for me, I'm merely a fan.
As badgerfan already pointed out-- if your college is playing on Friday night, the recruits aren't watching your team play. They won't be able to watch you in person, and they won't be able to watch you on television. You only play 12 games per year. You want recruits to be watching any time you can possibly make it happen.
I'll be shocked if Texas ever plays on a Friday night. Even when we played on T+1 it was never on Friday night.
-
I agree.
Big Ten's way of grabbing some network cash while protecting tOSU and M
possibly PSU, the 3 teams that are going to recruit well regardless
-
Northwestern will have ZERO recruits on the sideline, for their biggest home game of the year (and biggest crowd).

Except I am in Phoenix and I am officiating a HS football game and need to be at the site at 515p for pre-game meeting which is 815pm EDT and OSU's game will end 11:30 - 12 which is 9pm my time and most high school games end well after 9pm.
-
So is this also the Thursday night MAACTION thread (aka PAC Thread of Thursday Night Oblivion?). 'Cause I'm ready for some Tree-Bear action tonight.

Two straight weeks of work, 14 straight days of alarm going off at 530am, anyway you say it I need a drink. Pouring myself a Screwdriver and settling down for UCLA-Stanford. Flipping between NFL and Baseball too. I deserve it.

Amen brutha. I'm on conference calls with Asia, and watching some Bears and Trees, and drinking single malt Scotch right now.
It got below 60 degrees at one point today so it's winter/Scotch weather. :)

UCLA really beating the hell out of Stanford tonight. The blocked punt pretty much all Stanford did, until this garbage time drive.

I stumbled across a sports bar in Asheville, NC that was not bad, called Juicy Lucy's, don't know if it's a chain. Specialized in burgers, they were "OK", and they had about 15 beers on tap (about 5 were Miller Lite types).
We were there for lunch. The wife ordered her burger RARE and it came much more cooked than mine which was MED RARE, so they did it again, and it was still more done than mine. She ate it anyway, and later the manager came up and asked about it all and she pointed to her burger. He took half off, which is fair enough.
They had fried green beans as a side that were pretty solid.
We had dinner at a place there that had really good reviews and sounded great and it was entirely mediocre. And not cheap. Asheville supposedly is a happening place for foodies etc. I'm still looking. We did find a pretty nice wine bar at least.
The wife was unimpressed with the large house they have there for tours, but she liked the gardens.
-
Delaney and NW fudged this Friday nite date. They could have got their recruits for a Saturday game vs a top 10 Program.Cleveand radio was saying how F'd up Friday nite BIG Games are.At least wait until H.S. season is over by the 1st week or two of November.Buckeyes could tell Jim to shove it - and get away with it
-
Word out of Evanston is that they haven't cut the grass for about a month. It's about knee-high, and heavily watered.

I've got the fire roaring and the beer poured.

Harbaugh among 5 B1G coaches on the Dodd trophy watch list. He's got my vote so far.

Looks like Petite-Frere will get a nod at tackle

Would it kill the big ten to show some pregame stuff on the field? Do we really need talking heads up to kickoff on a Friday night?

I thought we were done letting the playing surface hoodwink us into thinking it would impact a game. Lee Corso's top reason for why Florida was going to beat Nebraska over 20 years ago.
