he shared a couple with Moore

was pretty good, Frost asked who won the award if it wasn't MArtinez at his Monday press conference.  Reporter says, Rondale Moore.  Frost smiles and says, oh yeah, he's pretty good!
Yep. Martinez was great. He certainly put up a worthy year.
I don't think anyone would have been shocked if he'd been Freshman of the year. But I doubt anyone is upset losing to Moore either.

I think its great when the Big 11 teams of the Big Ten have great athletes, too.

He made his mark the first week too, there was no sneaking around, he was a stud out of the gates.

That's hard to believe (not a shot at Moore of course).  Nobody, really?
I was surprised to find out that there's only been 3 true freshman Consensus All-Americans in NCAA history.
Moore is in elite company, with Adrian Peterson and Herschel Walker being the only other 2 that have done it.

Yup.
Then he followed that up with a pretty lousy game against Eastern Michigan, bolstered by 1 big run, and I remember thinking, ok, the kid is good, but at least we can pump the brakes a second.  Then he had 137 receiving yards the following week.
After his big game against Ohio State, he had 11 catches against MSU, but for only 74 yards (which is almost impossible to do); then 6 for 31 the following week against Iowa.  Figured he was hitting a bit of a freshman wall, combined with defenses keying on him, and Purdue forcing the ball there anyway.  Nope, closed with 21 catches for 255 yards and 4 TDs over the final two weeks against Wisconsin and Indiana.
Every time you figured reality was about to set in, he answered.

Despite his later …...troubles, I'm kinda surprised that Maurice Clarett was not a freshman all-American.

That was my first thought, but wasn't he injured down the stretch of that season too?
Plus the RBs that year were Larry Johnson and Willis McGahee, tough group to crack.  Clarett didn't return kicks, so he didn't have a shot at breaking in there, like Moore did.  If Moore was only eligible as a WR, he wouldn't have been in either.

Oddly, Moore wasn't exactly as electric returning kicks as you'd expect given how good he was in the open field.
I do think he was listed as "All-Purpose" on one [or maybe more] of the All-American awards... I suppose that accounts for his receiving, his rushing, and his kick returns. But stat-wise, Moore wasn't really that much of a leader as a PR or KR. His averages would have put him mid-pack in the B1G.

Yeah, I don't know what you need to do to qualify for each, but Andy Isabella and Jerry Jeudy were the consensus WRs and Moore was consensus as "All Purpose"

It was pretty significant.  Rondale was the first true frosh consensus AA in Big Ten history.  Last one was Adrian Peterson in 2004.
