Week 9
« on: October 24, 2021, 03:49:52 PM »
Full B12 slate this week.

Texas -3 at #16 Baylor.  Looks like the best B12 game this week.  The common game between these two is OSU where they both lost by similar scores.  I'm going with the Horns in this one.

#22 ISU -7 at WVU.  I'm surprised the line is that low.  ISU needs this game to stay in the conference chase.  I'll pick the BiaBs

TTech at #4 OU -20.  OU is favored by 20 so this looks like a dogfight.  This is OU's 9th game in 9 weeks and they are beat up.  I'll pick the Sooners but meh.

TCU @ KSU -3.  Battle of the purples.  Both 1-3 in conference and struggling.  I'd say KSU by 3 sounds right.

KU @ #15 OSU -29.5.  Halloween eve in Stillwater where it always looks like halloween.  Pokes won't get handled by KU the way OU did.  Easy win for the Pokes.

I'm seeing Baylor favored by 2.5 today with a very low (68%) confidence. That's pretty well in keeping with how I feel as well. I may actually favor Baylor by a bit more, but with very low confidence all the way around.

Baylor is going to do what they do. They want to run out of a wide zone package where OL goes one direction and just tries to widen out the line. The RB then just tries to find his favorite gap and head up field. If it's working, then all sorts of stuff like delays and cutbacks are on the table to burn an over aggressive defense. If it isn't working, there's really no Plan B. The QB isn't terrible, but the passing game just isn't going to drive the defense off the ball.

Moreover, Baylor plays defense with their offense. They want the game clock to run so their defense doesn't have to post stop after stop. They have two LB in Jalen Pitre and Terrell Bernard that force the action. If there's a play being made, those guys are creating it. If I'm Texas, I'd almost assign a spy to one or the other every play just to pick him off and play 10 on 10.

In order to win this game, Texas has to have improved during the bye week. The OL has to get on the same page and a second reliable receiver has to emerge. Texas has too many deadly weapons on the field. Baylor certainly can't keep them all corralled, but they're useless if Casey Thompson can't get the ball out of his hand!

The defense just has to get the first guy to arrest the ball carrier. They're not busting in bad positions. There's always someone in position to make the play. The first guy is just whiffing too many times. The play degenerates into multiple 1 on 1 missed tackles rather than detaining the ball carrier and gang tackling.

Please, someone rush the passer. Every play can't be blitzing!

I predict Texas gets up by 2 or 3 scores in the first half, and ends up losing by a TD.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

I actually think it will be Baylor that does that
They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.

If Texas gets up by 3 scores, Baylor is finished. They don't have the offensive pop to get that many points. It would mean a complete failure of their game plan and some really bad luck.

Texas may have 8 possessions the entire game.

I'm not good picking either for or against Texas.  I'll pick Baylor and I'll also be prepared to see the Horns play their best game of the season.  The game is at 11:00, so you don't get the frenzied mob of Baptists that shows up for evening games.

#22 ISU -7 at WVU.  I'm surprised the line is that low.  ISU needs this game to stay in the conference chase.  I'll pick the BiaBs
BiaBs--heh!  Hadn't seen that abbreviation before.  :86:

This game is at 1:00, so, similar to the UT @ BU game, no liquored-up Morgantownians, no smell of burning couches in the air--so what's to fear?

Cardinals win a close one.

OU wins but does not cover.  Again.

Yeah, home team wins in a close one.

Pokes win easily.  Covering is a different matter.

Well, Baylor 31, Texas 24.  Texas at 4-4.  Who'd have thought that at halftime of the RRS?

WVU leads Iowa State 38-31 but the Clones are threatening with 7-plus minutes left in the game.

Kansas State leads TCU 21-5 at halftime.

OU leads Texas Tech 28-7 at halftime.  The Sooners' defense hasn't been a steel curtain, but it's playing the best it has since the 2nd half against Texas.  Caleb Williams--looking very, very good for a guy who, when he was last playing before this season, was a junior in HS.  He is really good at keeping his eyes downfield when he scrambles to avoid the rush.

In other news, how about those Michigan State Spartans!  Outscored Michigan 15-3 in the 4th quarter.

And how about those Wisconsin Badgers!  Iowa can't beat good teams unless they get turnovers.

WVU beat Iowa State 38-31.  The Clones' season--relative to expectations--has officially gone down the tubes.

K-State beat TCU 31-12.

Georgia continues to look like the best team in all the land.  By far.

OK, my picks weren't so hot.
Glad to see a fairly complete game for the Sooners for a change.  Getting a few players back from injury really helped.  Rattler looked great in garbage time.  I'd say his arm is better than Williams but Williams is a magician.  Williams looks like Mayfield and Murray rolled into one. That pick was OK.
Baylor is tougher that I thought so I missed on that one.
WVU showed that playing OU tough was no fluke and took out ISU.  Missed on that one.
KSU beat TCU easily.  My pick was OK.
OSU is pounding Kansas.  My most correct pick of the day.
Glad OU has a bye week coming up.  They'll need to rest and heal up to face Baylor, ISU, and OSU in consecutive weeks.

I missed on ISU @ WVU.

I was running errands and didn't see much of that game.  Did the BiaBs lose the turnover battle?

I only saw pieces of the game.  I saw Breese Hall fumble trying to cross the goal line and I think that was the only TO of the game.

Checking the stats on CBS Sports, I see that WVU threw 2 INTs and that ISU lost one fumble.

But the one lost fumble was a costly one.
