somewhat local kid on Sooner D Line swaps schools..

there is a kid who played for a HS not far from me who signed on with OU... kid is a monster and a straight A student.

His uncle fell ill and the kid came home to be with him as he passed.  Apparently the Defensive Line coach decided to give him a bunch of shit for it- and to the point the kid withdrew.  He'll be playing for Vanderbilt in the future.

this isn't a tale so much about the kid's situation, but... Riley better get a grip on that DL coach and implement some sort of expectation (if none is already defined).  This is the kind of story other coaches will be sure to share with recruits they're courting they know are also flirting with OU.  I guess it happens all the time?  Maybe; maybe not... it's not good for the relationship between the area HS's and OU... The same school a few years back produced Mario Williams.  They've been know to produce some good players.  I hate to see some sideways slap create angst.

the kid's family (father specifically) is close friends with a guy i work with.  i guess this just happened.

That doesn't sound good.

I'll see if I can find out anything more about it, Drew.

But I'm not exactly an insider.

The kid is Derek Green.  He was a 3 star out of high school but it was reported Ruffin McNeal thought he was very underrated.  He enrolled in January but shortly after left the team and announced he was joining the military, then announced in February he was transferring to Vandy. Kind of a weird progression.
The DL coach is Calvin Thibodeaux.  I don't know anything except what has been published but he doesn't have a record of running kids off.  Two DL, Derek Green and Ron Tatum, left after Grinch was hired as DC and I have read these two don't fit his scheme.

I sort of forgot about this situation due to the passing of JCG/HH/CH.

But what I have learned is essentially what Thumper said.  Ruffin McNeil is the DTs position coach and Calvin Thibodeaux is the DEs coach, and neither of them is known for treating players badly.

I'm glad to hear it, and I'd guess there is usually an excuse offered up of much less substance by the player in circumstances like this.  the only reason i shared it here is the connection to the kid through a guy i work with.
