Early in the war, various regiments attempted to feature "flowery" uniforms to attract recruits, usually mimicking some French outfit or tradition because of Napoleon.

There were several cases of mistaken identity as a unit from the other side was confused with friend, or vice versa.  The Confederates often would recover Union uniforms to replace their own after battle because theirs might be in tatters, but they'd turn the top part inside out or get it dirty.  Boots of course were highly prized, and Union backpacks, and things like coffee.
