#11 Notre Dame v. #30 Iowa State

The above ratings are from the Massey composite computer rankings.

I must say I am a bit jealous that Iowa State now plays Iowa's former rivalry week rival from the 1930s through the 1960s, in a bowl game. Iowa hasn't played Notre Dame since circa 1968, and Iowa State replaced Notre Dame on Iowa's schedule. A very cheesy trade-off in my opinion. My opinion doesn't matter as it has changed nothing.

Notre Dame v. Iowa State looks like one of the least interesting games on the schedule. But, it's college football, so we'll see.

Here's what Guerin Emig, the sports columnist for the Tulsa World, wrote in an article about all the Big 12's bowl matchups in today's paper.

Iowa State vs. Notre Dame in the Camping World Bowl
Dec. 28, 11 a.m. (ABC)

Penn State-Memphis in the Cotton Bowl makes an attractive prelude to the playoff Dec. 28, but I like this baby even better.

The Cyclones can’t touch the Irish for pedigree or postseason history, but they’ll match their blue-blooded opponent hit for hit.

Also, popular as the Notre Dame brand might be, I guarantee there will be more ISU fans in that stadium. The Cyclones have had a relatively disappointing season, but that won’t keep thousands of vacation-seeking Iowans from invading Orlando.

Bovada odds: Irish by a field goal

Early thought: Cyclones by a field goal

ISU is a well-coached team.  I suspect that their talent doesn't line up to Notre Dame's, but that's been true many times before this season, and it didn't stop them from beating Texas, and almost beating Oklahoma.

I think it'll be a pretty close game and of course would love to see the Birds in a Blender pull out the win.

ND seems like a weird team to me, they had some very close wins against mundane competition and a couple losses of course.  And bowl game situations are inherently weird, perhaps aside from the playoffs.  I imagine the ND players had higher aspirations than this bowl preseason and perhaps will waltz in and get beat.

I'll root for the boys from Ames in their very first matchup vs the Fish Eaters

One thing about ISU, they believe in violently executing their plan. They may be under-talented or out-planned, but they're not going to be outhit. They're going to make you prove it.

Bowl games always had an exhibition quality to them.  That is even greater now that top players are sitting out the games in many cases.  And you have teams basically underwhelmed about the bowl they were given and not really motivated to do very much because the season was a disappointment.

My general notion is to pick the underdog and take the points across the board and you'll beat the house.
