What about Wisconsin?

At the time the loss to Wazzu was a loss to an unranked team and looked pretty bad for a B1G-W favorite.  OTOH, Wazzu remains undefeated and is now ranked.  I'll add that West Coast (and I'm including Wazzu even though I know they aren't actually "coastal") road trips are tough.

It is entirely possible that the Wazzu loss isn't all that bad, we'll find out quickly as Wazzu's next two games are against ranked OrSU and UCLA teams.

If Wisconsin is going to win the West, I see this game as not quite but almost a "must win".  Sure, in theory they could struggle a bit then get things straightened out and finish strong and the B1G-W winner frequently has more than one loss but if the Badgers lose here their margin for error is nearly gone.

If Wisconsin can win here and at home against Rutgers after taking a week off, they should be ranked by the time they host Iowa on October 14.  If they can't, it could be a long season in Madison.

Can Tanner Mordecai run?

A running QB is the only way teams have been successful running against the Purdue defense.

If he can't, Wisconsin may struggle.

Can he pass?

If so, Wisconsin may be in luck because the Purdue secondary is exploitable.

The last game against Syracuse was an anomaly.  Purdue fumbled 7 times, lost 3, and threw an interception.  That ain't happening again.

Purdue gets Kydran Jenkins back tonight as well.  The Purdue front 6/7 has been excellent at run stop (except 1 QB), and has been excellent at getting pressure on the QB in passing situations.

We sucked in the first half, ref’s sucked in the second half.

That looked like a serious injury to Chez Mellusi.

Any updates?

Following the unfortunate injury, Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell was asked about Mellusi, and his injury status postgame.

“Yeah, I don’t know exactly what the deal is. I don’t know that it looks good,” Fickell said.

“They’re hurting in there. If we lose him for a while, it will be tough. He’s not just a great football player for us, he’s not just a great tailback. He’s been a heart and soul of what we do, because of what he’s gone through, and some of those ups and downs, and the injuries. To have the attitude that he has, he’s a big part.
If he can’t go for a while, he’ll still be a really big part of what we do.”

OK, here's the thing though.

Purdue is going to win tonight.

I have documentable, incontrovertible proof.

This year, something is different.  What, you may ask?  New coach?  New defensive system?  Better facilities?  Is Sagittarius in the seventh house along with the moon?

No, nothing like that.

You see, the wife and I were at the Wisconsin / Purdue game back in 2004.  Orton's fumble.  THAT game.  The one that started this stupid curse.

My wife and I were in the south end-zone seats.  The wife was pregnant at the time with our first son.  We were seated right under the scoreboard, and every time Purdue scored, that big train whistle would blow.

My son did not appreciate the sound.  He kicked every time it happened, apparently quite hard.  He didn't like it.  He couldn't do anything about it from where he was though, so instead he called upon the dark powers and he started the curse.

That's right Purdue fans.  It's all his fault.

But you know what?  It's over.  My son is no longer living with us.  He has taken his stuff, and more importantly, his football allegiances and moved to Ohio State.  His voodoo is no longer affecting the Boilers for this game (and quite frankly, I fear for the OSU faithful that their first half struggles so far this year could be attributed to him....further evidence required).

Hopefully this is the beginning of 18 years of retribution.  A cosmic rebalancing, so to speak.

Sorry Badger fans.  It begins tonight.

BTW, of note:  Two hours after posting this, my son called and said he was coming home for the weekend (needed to do some laundry, etc.).
I almost told him no....

From the Athletic:

Fickell made it clear after the game that the choice came from “the book,” which indicates when to go for two based on score and situation. And in this instance, it made a heck of a lot more sense than when former Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema went for two with a 41-16 lead late in the fourth quarter of a 2010 game against rival Minnesota because “that’s what the card says.”

The difference this time? Fickell had watched Purdue score touchdowns on consecutive drives during the third quarter, which left him feeling “not overly comfortable” with Wisconsin’s defensive performance.

I thought they did a really good job of moving the ball,” Fickell said of Purdue. “We did some good things at making some stops there in the red zone and getting a couple of turnovers. But it never felt like, ‘Hey, we’re in good shape.’”

That sequence, as well as Fickell’s commentary, says a lot about where this defense is four games into the season and how far it has to go.

Season-ending injuries in 2021, 22 and 23. I think I'd probably hang 'em up if I were in his spot. I guess we'll see.
