I think we will learn a lot about both of these teams come Friday.

It's a night game in West Lay Flat, which should make for a great atmosphere in Ross-Ade Stadium.

I'll have more analysis on the game as the week goes on, but I do believe Purdue is better than its record.

Purdue needs to find an identity and groove on offense.

The play calling by Harrell has been questionable thus far.  They want to get RB Mockobee involved, but they are attempting that via the read option, which neither Mockobee or QB Hudson Card seem to be good at.

Card is a better gunslinger working out of shotgun.  He can make throws all over the field, and use his legs if nothing is open.  Burks, Yaseen, and freshman TE Klare have all emerged as legit targets.

On defense Purdue was left with a bare cupboard in the secondary.  It has been exploited so far.

feels like a must win if Wisconsin wants to turn the season around and run away with the West. Gimme the Badgers to cover. I think they win by 10+.

At some point in time Purdue has to break this ridiculous curse.  This Friday night seems ripe.

As ELA eluded to, this was a stupid OOC schedule for Purdue.  The game against Syracuse highlights this fact in that they run the perfect offense to counter Purdue's new, inexperienced, defense.  A read option meant to take advantage of aggression.

Purdue is not as bad as their record.  The offense is capable.  The defense needs work, but they are aggressive, and the front 6/7 has looked good for the most part.

Wisconsin doesn't run the offense that kicks the Purdue D off balance.

This should be fun to watch.

As someone who hasn't seen a minute of Purdue football in 16 games (I think I have that right), there's a part of me that would amend my Purdue boycott to include "finally beating effing Wisconsin" along with "making the effing Final Four" and "doing something effing remarkable in football"... 

But nah... Beating Wisconsin--especially this year--wouldn't be as big of a shock as one might think...

...and either way, it won't happen. They're gonna roll up 428 rushing yards and beat us 39-13.

Wisconsin got their "lay a turd" road game out of the way already, so no danger of that happening tonight. But there can always be a second or third or fourth lay a road turd game, right?

Not gonna happen this week. I think the Badgers finally start out strong, something they have yet to do this season.

Opponents have outscored UW 41-30 in the first half. UW has outscored its opponents 48-7.

Time to put together a complete game in this one could be it.

I think we will see a good amount of RPO from UW - something that really hobbled Purdue last week. I also think we'll see Allen and Melusi each go over the 100-yard mark.

On defense, it all starts with UW getting to the QB, early and often. UW no longer has a Watt/Schobert/Herbig type at OLB so it's not been easy this season. OLB Darryl Peterson needs to break out tonight and get to the QB. I think they should also turn the ILB's loose.

Enough with the 3-3-5 for this season - or at least until the DL is fully healthy - it's not.

I think we'll see a lot of 2-4-5 tonight - get the best players on the field. There is nothing to lose with this approach.

UW takes the air out of Ross-Ade early and goes on to win 35-24 on the road.

And... I would not be shocked if just the opposite happens - again.

I'll be watching from a safe distance, on my lanai with 80-degree temps and an umbrella drink or five.

I will be at the game tonight and really have no feel, I can see this game going either way, we have struggled with Wiscy historically.  I have not watched any Wisconsin games this year, so no clue.  I think it comes down to the Purdue Offense vs Wisconsin Defense ... we are going to need to score some points to have a chance as our D will give some up.  Can we stop the run?

OK, here's the thing though.

Purdue is going to win tonight.

I have documentable, incontrovertible proof.

This year, something is different.  What, you may ask?  New coach?  New defensive system?  Better facilities?  Is Sagittarius in the seventh house along with the moon?

No, nothing like that. 

You see, the wife and I were at the Wisconsin / Purdue game back in 2004.  Orton's fumble.  THAT game.  The one that started this stupid curse.

My wife and I were in the south end-zone seats.  The wife was pregnant at the time with our first son.  We were seated right under the scoreboard, and every time Purdue scored, that big train whistle would blow.

My son did not appreciate the sound.  He kicked every time it happened, apparently quite hard.  He didn't like it.  He couldn't do anything about it from where he was though, so instead he called upon the dark powers and he started the curse.

That's right Purdue fans.  It's all his fault.

But you know what?  It's over.  My son is no longer living with us.  He has taken his stuff, and more importantly, his football allegiances and moved to Ohio State.  His voodoo is no longer affecting the Boilers for this game (and quite frankly, I fear for the OSU faithful that their first half struggles so far this year could be attributed to him....further evidence required).

Hopefully this is the beginning of 18 years of retribution.  A cosmic rebalancing, so to speak.

Sorry Badger fans.  It begins tonight.

So in a discussion of Michigan's pathetic OOC within Michigan's game thread for this week I brought up Purdue's schedule and that led me to wonder about Purdue's bowl chances.  

Purdue took on a challenging OOC.  They played two P5's an got a road win in Blacksburg against VaTech.  Unfortunately, it appears that VaTech is a mess this year (win over FCS, losses to PU and RU) so that win may not mean much.  In their opener Purdue lost at home to Fresno State which might not be all that bad considering that it was a close loss (39-35) and Fresno is now 3-0 and just blew out ASU.  In their most recent game Purdue lost at home to a now 3-0 Syracuse although the jury is still out on how good Syracuse is because their other two victims were an FCS school and a bad MAC team.  

Nonetheless, Purdue is now 1-2 and needs five league wins to get to 6-6 and bowl eligibility.  Below I rank their nine league games in what I consider to be the order of the chances of a Purdue win from greatest to least:

  • at Northwestern 11/18
  • vs Indiana 11/25
  • vs Illinois 9/30
  • vs Minnesota 11/11
  • at Nebraska 10/28 
  • vs Wisconsin tonight, 9/22 
  • at Iowa 10/7 
  • vs Ohio State 10/14 
  • at Michigan 11/4

This game, by my estimation is NOT one of the five most likely wins for the Boilermakers so it is certainly possible that they could attain Bowl eligibility without winning tonight.  That said, a win here would be enormously helpful to the Boilermakers as it would give them some margin for error.  

With a win here the Boilermakers could afford a loss in one of the five easier games and still make it.  With a loss here the Boilermakers either have to be perfect in the five easier games, win in Iowa City, or pull of a major upset.
