B - if any NFL team alters its value of a player by what he does in a bowl (ie - ONE GAME), then they're probably a dumpster-fire of a franchise
Chuba played in 13 games last season - in 7 of those games he had 7 or fewer carries
Chuba played in 12 games this season

so 18 games with major contribution - not all of those 18 games were against solid competition

one more game vs solid competition is significant for evaluation

Well scouts saw how he did vs the:
70th
81st
35th
36th
46th
54th
58th
64th
76th
103rd and
109th-best run defenses.

So yes, unfortunately, seeing him vs A&M's 55th-ranked run D might be useful.  Jesus.

I mean teams hold pro days, which is a more pointless version of a pointless event, and scouts attend.  I'd prefer a bowl tape to anything learned there.

Well a pro day is sort of unique, isn't it?  A bowl game is just another example of something you have on film plenty already.

Idk, personally, the success or failure of a draft pick on any given team is much more random chance/luck than anyone involved would like to admit.

A pro day is basically so scouts can check off what they already know or cross people off lists. They mostly learn nothing new (unless it's like a snapper or something).

And yes, it's often luck based. Same as coaching hires to a degree.

I understand the one Alabama LB sitting out - dude missed all of 2018 with an injury and 10 games of 2017.  Why a team would draft a guy like that beats me....
Big, fast pass rusher. If he beats the injury, maybe a talent. If he doesn't, well it's football. Most guys are gonna get hurt at some point.

If a player goes off with a trainer and works on his "40 times" and shuttle time, etc., as opposed to practicing for a game, how much can he realistically improve his statistics?

Maybe a player, an OL, DB, LB works to shed a few pounds and comes out faster than expected in the 40, does that elevate his draft position?  Obviously, this can means tens of thousands of dollars, in theory.

I thought Nick Chubb was a 'sure thing" mainly because of his character and work ethic.  He seems to be doing pretty well at Cleveland.

Those personal attributes can't really be improved and I value them a lot in a player.

character and work ethic don't mean much to the Oakland Raiders, but 40 times........... wow

Somewhere around now is the 9 year anniversary of Tattoo-Gate.  It started as simply as a story like that on ESPN.  To this day, it doesn't make sense why those 5 or 6 players were allowed to play in the bowl game.  Clearly someone was worried about ticket sales and viewership plummeting with a starting QB having to sit out, so they stepped in.  Ohio State probably should've just held them out anyways.

ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia will be without a third starting offensive lineman when it takes on No. 7 Baylor in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on January 1, 2020 (8:45 p.m. ET on ESPN). Fourth-year junior right guard Ben Cleveland will miss the bowl game due to academic issues per his father, Derek.

So say Baylor beats UGA.  I tend to look at the other side of the "UGA was down a few players" and/or "they didn't show up" ideas - unfortunately, it would cheapen the potential victory for Baylor.  Yes, they get the win, it goes down in black-and-white and all, but for us who are around now, we know the win wouldn't be 100% strong.
Which sucks.

Ten years from now, it will just be a win, without any asterices.  You dance with the ones who brought ya.

It's a "major bowl", so "they" keep stats on that.  As poorly as the OL played this year (IMHO), losing three might not be that bad a deal, although two of them have pretensions of being high draft picks.  I don't know if this was the OC or HC or OL coach or who, but they simply did not do much this year opening holes in the run game.

UGA is not going to do well without a good running game.
