When did Texas A&M almost poach Bo, in relation to that 41-3 loss in Ann Arbor?

Texas A&M vs conferences 1920-2023
Texas A&M vs conferences 1920-2023
The fact that aTm played in Columbus and Ann Arbor in back-to-back weeks in 1970 got me curious so I looked it up.

The Aggies played a MONSTER schedule that year.  They had four OOC games and seven SWC games.  The four OOC opponents were an easy home game against a terrible Wichita State team (they finished 0-9) then three road games all against teams that finished in the top-9:
  • #5 Ohio State in Columbus
  • #7 LSU in Baton Rouge
  • #9 Michigan in Ann Arbor
Within the SWC they played #3 Texas, #11 Arkansas, and a TxTech team that finished almost ranked.

The Aggies actually beat LSU which is amazing considering that LSU won the SEC and aTm finished 2-9 with the only other win coming in the aforementioned game against Wichita State.  In total, aTm started 2-0 including a road win over (then) #12 LSU then lost nine straight:
  • 56-13 to (then) #1 Ohio State in Columbus
  • 14-10 to #9 Michigan in Ann Arbor
  • 21-7 to TxTech at home
  • 31-15 to TCU at home
  • 29-24 to Baylor in Waco
  • 45-6 to #8 Arkansas at home
  • 6-3 to SMU in University Park
  • 18-17 to Rice at home
  • 52-14 to #1 Texas in Austin

Texas A&M d. #16 ILLINOIS

This game is notable because A&M has played so few Big 10 opponents over the course of history.  I think we've only played a Big Ten opponent in the preseason like 8 times, and this may have been the last one.
What @847badgerfan shared does seem like an unusually low number of OOC games against B1G/Big11Ten/Big Ten teams.

Per that site, in their entire history aTm only has 15 games against Big Ten teams:
  • 1 at home, 1-0 a 43-13 win over Illinois on 9/27/1975.
  • 6 on the road, 2-4 Two each in Ann Arbor and Columbus (0-4) with wins in Champaign and East Lansing.
  • 8 neutral site, 3-5 Three Alamo Bowls (1-2), a Sugar Bowl (0-1), a Cotton Bowl (0-1), and a Meinke Car Care Bowl (1-0).  Then there were two regular season neutral-site games in Dallas (1-1 against Iowa and Purdue in 1931 and 1967).

That 1975 game against Illinois wasn't the most recent regular season game but it was close.  They travelled to Illinois in 1976 then Michigan in 1977 and haven't played a scheduled game against a Big Ten / Big11Ten / B1G team since.

The only thing about that graphic is that it shows all games including bowl games.  We have not played a non-conference, regular season game vs any team from the Big 10 since the 1970's, and only 9 total in 100 years.  We have played a lot of ACC and PAC games in that same time frame, including 4 games vs Notre Dame in the last 25 years non-conference.

Doesn't that seem strange to you?

Hmmm it might be strange, but Texas rarely played the B10 as well.  Before the 2005/6 series against Ohio State, you have to go back to 1965/6 with a home-and-home series against Indiana.

Horns played a lot of SEC, PAC, ACC, and of course Big 8 teams (due to the annual OOC game against OU), but almost zero B10 teams.

Several games against PSU in the 80s and 1990, but then nothing once they joined the B10.

Nebraska trailed stubborn Miami 9-7 at the half but rallied behind 24 second-half points and quarterback Vince Ferragamo to defeat the Hurricanes 31-16.

Miami, a team coached by former Husker assistant Carl Selmer that had taken Oklahoma to the hilt before losing 20-17 the previous week, struck for six first-quarter points on two field goals by Chris Dennis. Nebraska’s only first-half score was set up when linebacker Jim Wightman recovered a Hurricane fumble on the Miami 25. Five plays later, I-back John O’Leary scored from three yards out with 10:20 left in the half. However, the Hurricanes led 9-7 at the break after Dennis kicked an 18-yard field goal four minutes later.

Nebraska came out in the third quarter behind Ferragamo’s throwing and O’Leary’s running to score 10 points and take a 17-9 lead. In the final frame, the Huskers finally put the game out of reach, scoring on an eight-yard run by O’Leary and a 40-yard pass from Ferragamo to Bobby Thomas to make it NU 31, UM 9. Miami scored once before the final gun, making the final score 31-16.

I'm also interested in the games A&M played in Dallas.  I feel like schools did that a lot back then.  Florida played quite a few games in Tampa back in the day.
