OU started the 1985 season on September 28th, which for reasons I won't bore anyone with.  Anyways, they barely got out of the Metrodome alive against Lou Holtz's Gophers.   13-7 final.  Rickie Foggie memories.   That was the latest start of a season in power 5 history.

It says something that even the Detroit Free Press says tOSU should be in the B1GCG even if they don't qualify under the existing rule.

Florida's 30-20 advantage over Tennessee is even more impressive when you consider how completely dominant Tennessee was early on:
  • Tennessee won the first ten meetings (1916-1953).
  • Tennessee won 13 of the first 15 meetings (1916-1971) and over that span the average score was 19-7.
  • As late as 2004, Tennessee still held a four game lead over the Gators, 19-15.
From 2005-2020 UF is 15-1 against TN.

Indeed.
Historically, Tennessee is firmly 2nd in the SEC, behind Bama.  But a lot of that success was pre-WWII.

Since integrating, the Vols are ho-hum vanilla average.  And we own them so hard.

10 meetings from 1916 to 1953.  You'd never know that they were in the same conference with each other.
For much of its history, the SEC was more a consortium of teams that occasionally played each other than a true conference.

Yeah, the SEC didn't really become cohesive until 1992, when it expanded to 12.

Very true. For many years Georgia Tech, who was one of the SEC big boys, refused to even play the Mississippi teams despite being in the same conference. One might think that had something to do with segregation, but Tech was as lilly white as Ole Miss.

I didn't realize that they were so bereft of history and tradition.

That must suck.
