I picked an example that happens every so often.  The cool thing is we can look this shit up:
2010 SEA 7-9 hosted a playoff game.  So did:
2014 CAR
2022 TB
2020 WAS
2011 DEN was .500 and hosted.

It's a poor system.  Doesn't mean it's unsuccessful.  Doesn't mean they'll ever change it.  But it's still a poor system from a competitive point of view.
And we all know all of the NFL's faults would be a LOT more acknowledged without the gambling and fantasy football.
But some here choose to pretend it's perfect or infallible for some reason.

PROPOSED B1G East:  Michigan, Ohio St, Michigan St, Penn St, Maryland, Virginia, Notre Dame, Indiana, Purdue, Rutgers
In 2000:
UM 8-3
NW 8-3
Pur 8-3
OSU 8-3
PSU 5-7
MSU 5-6
IU 3-8
UVA 6-5
Md 5-6
ND 9-2, with win over Purdue

So ND would win the division.  A one-game lead and h2h. 
But that's not the important part.  It's 9 conference games.  THAT'S a sample size.  It's so completely more statistically valid (9 of 12) than 6 of 17 is, that I can't even believe we're having this conversation.

Some were simply slow to dive in.  It wasn't even clear HOW to dive in, at first.  I know Florida started with several, unrelated groups and it took time to consolidate them and figure out what they were doing.  

The SEC's advantages did suddenly take a back seat to $$$.  We all know that.  So suddenly, when prep/exposure for the NFL, having the best HCs, competing for NCs, and playing in front of 90K fans all dropped a notch on the totem pole, there's a consequence.  
Cool.

But it's probably whatever is salacious and juicy instead.  That's always the culprit.  Whatever is most disrespectful and would make the cover of National Enquirer.  Go with that.

And please understand, I'm not saying it can't be that, but I am saying it's not automatically that.

I find it fascinating that with this monumental paradigm shift in the sport, so many act like 2 years is a proper barometer.  Maybe.  Maybe not.  
This could be a blip.
You ask about when the SEC will make it mean more?
Be careful what you ask for.  These are not rational people.  Even Jesus takes a back seat to college football in many southern households.  The culture (as long as the sport itself doesn't commit suicide) will not abide being less than the best for very long.

I'm not privy to who has more money. But money is the great equalizer. Recruiting used to be the what everyone focused on, and the SEC had a natural advantage in being close to lots of good players. But now money has replaced "recruiting ability" and geography.

Welp, you just gave me a list of 5 games in.....15 years.  Oh my god, it's so flawed!  

I really don't give a shit about the NFL....at all.  So I'm not going to defend anything...because I don't give a shit.  We sit here and argue all day long about how CFB was so much better when the system was inherently flawed...but it was tradition and it was OUR game.  Split national titles...perfectly OK!  1984 BYU...played almost nobody but wins the MNC...Perfectly OK!  But a NFL Division Champion can't host a playoff game.  Whatever.  

Then we argue for YEARS about how the playoffs would make the regular season meaningless....until UT and Notre Dame don't get in because they lost to one or two teams they shouldn't have.  So, you're telling me..the REGULAR SEASON matters!
