The 2024 Corvette E-Ray that will pacing this year’s Indianapolis 500 now has a driver and its baseball legend Ken Griffey Jr who will have the honor of leading the field of 33 IndyCar racers to the Green Flag.

The eagerly anticipated announcement was made Monday morning at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“Driving the Pace Car and leading the field to start the Indy 500 is one of the coolest experiences,” Griffey said. “I came to the track a few years ago as a photographer and look forward to seeing the race from a different perspective.”

Blech.  Chevy Chevette.  Reminds me way too much of my Dodge Omni.

The Omni was probably a better car.  I had a Chevette for 6 years.  My wife was given one as a graduation present, so I was stuck with it.  It had the more powerful engine but was an automatic, and was plain horrible, and didn't get very good gas mileage.  When she first got it, it was improperly tuned and was getting 25 mpg on the highway.  I couldn't believe how bad it was so I checked the tuning, it was way off.  I fixed that, which helped some.

I still had my '73 Nova, so we drove the Chevette to work usually to save gas, a bit.  I traded it in on a Dodge Caravan which at least had the 5 speed.

I am shuddering recalling how awful cars were ca. 1980.  Poor build quality, poor acceleration, poor fuel economy, just basically poor.

And German car makers.

I agree with that, though I suspect various techniques would have been adopted by US makers, though more slowly had they been able to sell junk longer.

I had a week long course in "Taguchi Methods" a long time back and the upshot was to design cars such that their assembly was easier to do right than wrong.

Yes, it was derived from some older AT&T techniques, they acknowledged that and went into the history a bit.  I found the course interesting but utterly useless in my working world.

Deming is known for introducing statistical process control (SPC) into quality control from inspection. Genichi Taguchi rounded out the total quality process by integrating quality control into the design stage. SPC was improved by employing Taguchi's methods and statistical experiments before production began. Deming's work s considered revolutionary, while Taguchi's is evolutionary. Taguchi provided approaches that helped improve products and processes at the design stage, while Deming provided management theories.

Companies in the US wouldn't listen to Deming, so he took his TQM to Japan.
