There was a huge push among American manufacturers maybe... 15-20 years ago... to emphasize SPC and TQM, my company bought training from consultants to turn us all into "Six Sigma Blackbelts" and whatnot.

That all petered out after a few years, and now of course everything is about Generative AI.

Big wheel keeps on turning.
I first learned of TQM when I was in Madison. 33 years ago, or so.

FPL was a pioneer and was case study in our class.

Oh yeah, I recall that Six Sigma stuff.  I was far enough along in my career (and experience) to understand this was basically a fad, at least where I worked.

Some coworkers went whole hog into this and proudly displayed their "diplomas".  I don't think it did them any good.  And maybe it was useful stuff, I just was phasing out.

My apathy at work was excellent but I really didn't care.

My absolute favorite fad at work they called "Work Out".  This came down from on high with great fanfare to get ideas on  how to work more efficiently.  So, our section had 3-4 meetings about it.  At that time, I was in a section with 5 others who were all MUCH younger than I, I knew the section head pretty well, he was as old as I.  He dutifilly wrote down each suggestion the others made, including some truly ridiculous ones.  Occasionally he would glance my way and slightly raise his eyebrows.  He was going through the motions.

I was kind of intrigued, I didn't know these younger folks at all.  A couple of them had so much goofiness I wondered how they ever got out of college, or anything else, like bed in the mornings.  I kept my mouth shut.

My boss prepared this summary of the goofiness, and of course the most often suggested way to be more efficient was to have fewer meetings ....

And this was the case from about every such effort.  And then it magically disappeared, never to be mentioned again.

I was midcareer and still playing "The Game", or trying to.
