well if tavern style is the square cuts that is what I prefer.  I love the middle square pieces forget all that extra crust.
I always liked the little bite-size triangular corner pieces.

I'd always steal those quickly as a kid and not count them as a piece when dividing up the pieces

We've been trying to get to USVI for the last couple winters, but our daughters' schedules are not cooperating.

So we're spending a couple days on Anna Maria Island. It's the shortest (leisure) FL trip we've taken, but a second snowstorm this early in the winter was the breaking point.

This place is dead right now. It's glorious!

Yeah, we typically come in January, sneaking in before the "high season" of February/ March. This is my first time in December; it's great.

Fellas, going to be dropping off, probably tomorrow, definitely by Wednesday, for a couple of mostly disconnected weeks. Headed to New Zealand with the wife and kids. Dream trip. Not planning to spend much time with the interwebs. Mostly south island nature stuff. Will spend the last few days on a near-tropical island just off of Auckland on the north island. No Hobbittown (north island), but plenty of grand vistas from the LOTR movies (south island).

A bit on an oddity:

We got upgraded to "Premium Select" on that flight to SLC in a 767.  Nicer wider seats, meal service, overall pretty nice, we both slept some, seats 20A and B.

On the SLC-ATL we did not get upgraded, were in Comfort, but ... on a 767, same seats, 20 A and B, service was less "upgraded".  The sections just in front of us had been labeled "First Class" but were clearly of the Delta One variety.  My wife slept most of the flight, I dozed.

We're both still quite tired, I didn't sleep much last night, took a nap this AM, the time difference is 5 hours, enough to make me cranky.

I'm OK to pay for Comfort seats over main cabin, too cheap to pay for the upgrades.  Delta One to France is around $7K per.  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HONOLULU — A federal judge's ruling clears the way for Hawaii to include cruise ship passengers in a new tourist tax to help cope with climate change, a levy set to go into effect at the start of 2026.

U.S. District Judge Jill A. Otake on Tuesday denied a request seeking to stop officials from enforcing the new law on cruises.

In the nation's first such levy to help cope with the warming planet, Hawaii Gov. Josh Green signed legislation in May that raises tax revenue to deal with eroding shorelines, wildfires and other climate problems. Officials estimate the tax will generate nearly $100 million annually.

The levy increases rates on hotel room and vacation rental stays but also imposes a new 11% tax on the gross fares paid by a cruise ship's passengers, starting next year, prorated for the number of days the vessels are in Hawaii ports.

Cruise Lines International Association challenged the tax in a lawsuit, along with a Honolulu company that provides supplies and provisions to cruise ships and tour businesses out of Kauai and the Big Island that rely on cruise ship passengers. Among their arguments is that the new law violates the Constitution by taxing cruise ships for the privilege of entering Hawaii ports.

Plaintiff lawyers also argued that the tax would hurt tourism by making cruises more expensive. The lawsuit notes the law authorizes counties to collect an additional 3% surcharge, bringing the total to 14% of prorated fares.

This U.S. Ski Resort Has Excellent Snow, No Crowds, and Lift Tickets Under $50—All Near 2 Iconic National Parks
I’d been dreaming of visiting two of Utah’s most iconic national parks—Zion and Bryce Canyon—but what I didn’t expect was to stumble on a hidden ski gem that gets buried in powder, has virtually no lift lines, and offers some of the most affordable ski passes I’ve ever seen.

Brian Head Resort felt like a skier’s dream come true. Sitting at the highest base elevation in Utah at a whopping 9,600 feet, the mountain boasts ideal snow conditions and averages around 360 inches of snowfall each year.

I visited the area in February 2025, and as an avid skier who tracks storms like it’s my second job, I knew Brian Head was expecting about a foot of fresh snow over the weekend. So, naturally, I made it my mission to ski that following Monday. It turned out to be one of my favorite ski experiences in Utah.

Having skied at most of the state’s big-name resorts like Snowbird, Alta, and Brighton, I was surprised by how great the snow was and how empty the mountain felt. As Linda Thompson, manager of Brian Head's Winter Sports School, put it, “Brian Head is much less crowded than most other Utah resorts. One of the main reasons is our location—it takes a little more time to get here.”

Most of the popular Utah resorts are within an hour of Salt Lake City International Airport, making them convenient but busy. Brian Head, on the other hand, is hours away from any major airport. The closest is a small regional airport in Cedar City, so you don’t get waves of out-of-state skiers flying in. Instead, the resort draws mostly locals and people from southern Utah who want to avoid the long haul to Salt Lake City. Because of this, Brian Head sees fewer crowds, more fresh tracks, and a laid-back, truly local atmosphere.

While Brian Head is considered a smaller resort with 650 skiable acres, the mountain still offers an impressive 71 trails, eight chairlifts, and a wide range of terrain for experts, intermediates, and beginners alike. And because the crowds are so minimal, you actually have the space and the time to enjoy every bit of it.

But I can’t talk about my love for Brian Head without highlighting one of its best qualities: its genuine commitment to being one of Utah’s most family-friendly ski destinations—a difference you feel the moment you arrive. Beyond the warm, welcoming vibe, the prices are almost unheard of these days, with most lift tickets under $50 and some dipping as low as $14 this season. And as a mom, one of my favorite perks of all is that kids 12 and under ski free.
