Finally made it.  Luggage on later flight.  It showed up, I slept a bit in the condo.

Stepson picked us up at airport, my eyes were shot after 27 hours and three flights.

Delta actually did a decent job considering.  Sun just coming up.

Getting to Hawaii from here would be a bitch. Hell, getting to LA is a PIA. Much easier to go to Europe.

I take it that it was NOT the intended routing...

From the context, it seems the plane that was supposed to go from Seattle to Hawaii wasn't going to be available and Delta had to reroute him down to LAX to catch a different flight... 

Which sounds horrible. 

Right when I met my wife, she had already had a planned trip to Maui so I joined her. She went LAX->Maui and I used points and went LAX->Portland->Maui. Not a great routing, but I was smitten and didn't care :57:

If I to ever go to Hawaii again, I'd stop in Chicago for a family visit, then LA for a family visit, then HNL/Kawai. Follow that with another family visit in Phoenix, then fly home from there (connecting in DFW).

I've been twice, driving to Denver and changing planes in LA both times.  The red-eye home isn't very pleasant, especially the last time with a child seat/stroller and a toddler, but we made it.

Both times stayed on the west end of Maui near Lahaina.  Don't imagine it's the same or ever will be.  Lots of places in the continental US I haven't seen that I want to get to before ever thinking about going there again.

Crazy i've been to Hawaii twice and not Maui either time. My godmother thinks I'm crazy. We just fell in love with Kauai the first time. Only two place i've been to that I would go before there. Thailand & New Zealand. Kauai a very close 3rd

My daughter is going on a trip to Thailand soon.  Watched some u-toobs with her, place looks incredible.

How is it places like that can look beautifully manicured, pristine and clean, and you drive around the US and it's a graffiti-laden dilapidated trash heap?

View from lanai.  My wife did the plane travel using her companion ticket.  $1100 in comfort for both.  Missed getting upgraded by one slot.
