I could just do Kauai and call it good, but there is one place in Honolulu that I would go for dinner 1. before taking the puddle jumper, and 2. after coming back on the puddle jumper.

The Big Island

You guys are welcome to my share of this island retreat.  Spent 7 days there -- did a lot of driving.  Saw all the stuff, did all the things.

Some of it is very beautiful, but one of my least enjoyable vacations ever.  (The wild goats everywhere was funny though).

For the cost -- I'd rather take 3 vacay's to the Redneck Riviera (Florida Gulf Coast), where the beaches are better, the food is better, and I can drive there instead of a soul sucking flight over the Pacific.  Even factoring in I've been to Destin, Panama City -- 100 times.  Still would choose FGC.

My take on the Big Island is that you go there to see very specific things--mostly volcanos--and if that's your thing, you will love it. If you're looking for a tropical vacation, go to Maui or Kauai. I agree with BRAD on Oahu, except that I geek out on Pearl Harbor and we have a relative at the Punch Bowl, so every once in a while, definitely worth the trip. I could care less about Waikiki. I switch Maui with Kauai on my list. I think it is more accessible, and has better amenities than Kauai, but if you want slower and less crowded, Kauai is the answer. I love both for their natural beauty. The flight also isn't as bad from the West Coast as it would be from the East or Midwest. I've only been to the Redneck Riviera once--and had a good time--but I'm happy to continue spending way more on Hawaii than it would cost to go back there.
