I've always loved San Diego, but it certainly helped that a set of grandparents were down there and spoiled me rotten when I visited. I love Balboa Park--the air and space museum is quite good, as is the museum of fine art. I enjoy the downtown area, including their little Italy, as well as the beaches. Ocean Beach was the one closest to my grandparents. My other grandfather was stationed at Fort Rosecrans during the early years of WWII. That's a nice spot out on Point Loma.

The Needle Eye Tunnel is a breathtaking natural spot tucked inside Custer State Park in South Dakota 🇺🇸🪨

Carved straight through a granite rock face along the scenic Needles Highway, this narrow tunnel is famous for its tight squeeze and dramatic views. Only small to medium-sized vehicles can make it through—and even then, it’s with barely an inch to spare.

With stone walls so close you could almost reach out and touch them, driving through it is a thrilling experience you won’t forget!

Custer should be a national park. It's fantastic.

The Junto in Columbus is certainly the best hotel of choice.  Now that bartender on the roof needs to get a clue, she didn't know how to make a Gimlet, no clue  but good hotel. Exceptional lobby and main level bar .

Lot of fun at Hocking Hills State Park.elite hiking.

We spent the coldest winter of our lives .... one late spring in San Diego.

OK, it was more ... chilly, than cold, in the 60s with a breeze and no sign of sun, and I packed for "southern CA".  Our last day there was somewhat sunny but still a bit chilly.

Palm Springs was over 100°F a couple of days, my wife liked it fine.  We did the tram thing, which was marred due to having two separate groups waiting on the tram with exceptionally LOUD people yacking for no reason.  I covered my ears it was so loud.  We mostly ate in the room which had a small cooking area.  No restaurant stood out at all.  We visited Joshua Tree NP which my wife liked a lot even after her son in law told her it was a dump.  He went on at some length about how he didn't like it.  He's a bit ... officious.

The graduation (HS) was a major event for them, I sat through it bored out of my mind, but whatever, then they hosted a party after with about 60 people in a tiny house and yard (it was chilly).  I finally went back inside and sat by myself in their living room being unsocial, but my wife knows I loathe those kinds of things.  The father had 30 folks come in from Cincinnati for all this????  I don't get it, at all, I graduated HS and had a picture taken, we walked in the gym and got our diplomas and life went on.  This one was in the football stadium well attended with speeches and a band playing and 300+ folks being applauded.  Whatever, done.

Palm Springs is on "OK" place, I guess.  It does get very hot.  There are a lot of obvious gay folks out and about, a lot more than around here.  Whatever.

We had "comfort" seats coming back but at the exit so plenty of leg room, my wife got us in first going out, which is no big deal really.  We landed safely, done.

Yeah, I had to go down to San Diego yesterday for a work thing. And it was certainly not the warm sunny SD that people expect. It was right downtown near the water... There was light misting rain when I drove down there mid-morning, the sun never came out, and I don't think it got above 66-67 degrees all day. (Oddly as I got home we had some unseasonable rain and t-storm at my house.)

As I've mentioned before, this time of year is known as "June Gloom". The marine layer comes in overnight and blankets anything within maybe 10 miles of the coast with gray skies, occasionally misty rain in the morning, etc. Some days it's only the morning and it burns off... Some days [like yesterday] it just sticks around.

Going to San Diego was weird... I realized I don't think I've crossed the SD county border since 2021. And I don't think I've made the drive to downtown SD in quite a bit longer. I used to go down there for work frequently when I still directly supported customers.

I wish I'd had more time for a brewery visit on the way back :57:

My wife had another diatribe about how she doesn't like SD.  She claimed there "isn't anything there of interest".  OK, I guess.  I personally think SD is "fine", she's just very opposed to it for vague reasons.  I don't have any desire to go to SD to stay for a week, but for a couple days it's fine despite the weather.

Our last day we stayed at the Hilton at the airport which is on a spit of land overlooking the bay.  The sun came out briefly and we had a decent early dinner at a restaurant just down from the hotel, raw oysters and ceviche.  It was decent, some nice views while the sun was out.

The amusing thing is the two aircraft carriers in port, below, each with two nuclear reactors aboard.
