Ever been to Kauai?
First and only time either of us have been there was last year, actually.

I've done Oahu once--wouldn't bother with it again except going to Honolulu this year will be a sort of "required" thing. Maui twice, and Kauai once. I'd say Kauai has been my favorite so far, but sunrise at the summit and then hiking the Haleakala crater was a bucket list sort of experience.

We've done Oahu and Maui and the Big, mostly the latter of course.  My wife told me she didn't want to try any others but I expect to drag her to Kauai some day.

My step son and his GF will join us in December, which is a good thing.

I used to think the flight to Hawaii was too long.  I don't any more.

Why would Fearless ever feel the need to fly anywhere?

Our main Hawaii trip is to Maui, although we haven't been back since the Lahaina fire. We will likely go back next year. We really enjoy the mix of nice places to stay and eat, with amazing natural wonders, e.g., Haleakala, snorkeling in Hanalua Bay, hiking in the West Maui mountains. Kaui is lovely, too--a little less "touristy," but probably for the reason that its natural wonders are a little more isolated/harder to access (and it's rainier). But it is beautiful. My impression of the Big Island is it is for volcanoes. If you like volcanoes (and who doesn't?), it's the place. I've only been there once. I've been to Oahu a couple of times. It's the Big City version of Hawaii. Still beautiful, still tropical, but Waikiki is a big city. Not my style of tropical vacation, but it is for a lot of people (and of course there is the north shore and the Disney side of the island, which I'm sure are great fun). I did really enjoy visiting Pearl Harbor, and we have a family member buried at the Punch Bowl (the national cemetery), which is a moving and beautiful place.

The flight isn't bad from here: about 4 hours there; five hours back. Quicker than going to New York.

All of which is to say that we're a Maui family (Kaanapali), but there's nothing wrong with the other islands. :-)

Don't think so, but maybe it just feels longer coming back because we're sad to be leaving vacation.

Probably. From Chicago it was 9 hours going and 7.5 coming back. Jetstream.

That's my take on Oahu as well. It's a big city on a beach. For someone living where I do, it's basically like all the same stuff we have here, but it's a long flight and expensive hotel stay for the things I can drive to here.

I think for people escaping places with trash weather, or whose biggest body of water in the near vicinity is a lake or river, Oahu is nice. Waikiki is very "resort" feeling, there are a lot of places to eat and things to do, all within walking distance of your hotel. So I get the draw for many people, but as someone already living in SoCal, I prefer the places that are more of a change of pace.
