They are definitely huge. Almost like a small lobster tail.

I've been told to skip the steak at St. Elmo's

have a few drinks and the shrimps

the steak is good but not worth the price

No steak is "worth" the price in a restaurant.

For that matter, nothing in a restaurant is "worth" the price.

$15 for mushrooms, to share? $15 for a potato?

That's a steakhouse. It is what it is.

Most of here agree we can fix an excellent steak at home without much bother.  Most of us probably order one out on occasion knowing this.

The best steak I ever had out was a Tomahawk ribeye at Eddie Merlots, I think it was $59 at the time, now it's over $100.

This is why I prefer "ethnic" restaurants, their items are mostly things I can't fix at home without a lot of work.  I had to suggest to my wife that she order when we're traveling things that are "local", don't go to a steak place and order seafood, don't go to Boston and order a steak, etc.  For whatever reason she hadn't put this together perhaps because in France, the food can be somewhat less local than here?

I cook my own fish.

Going on a charter next week. Last time I came home with 30 lbs. of grouper.

A friend once told me that raw oysters were just an excuse to eat cocktail sauce, but I've learned not to use that on good oysters.

Oh yeah I love them without cocktail sauce.  I sometimes will put a dab of horseradish on top, though.  Like wasabi on a bite of sushi.

I dab some mignonette on them at times.

Some places don't have it of course.

For whatever reason she hadn't put this together perhaps because in France, the food can be somewhat less local than here?

I'd say food across the USA is quite a bit more varied than France, but it's really not a fair comparison because not only is the US much larger, it's also been more of a "melting pot" than France has over the past 200 years, with a wider variety of ethnic foods introduced here, compared to France.

And that's not to say that food across the country of France doesn't vary, because of course it does.  I just don't think it's as wide a variety, for the reasons stated above.

Or at least, that's my theory!  Could be completely wrong... :)

Yeah, I think that's it, she just hadn't realized you should probably order whatever is local in the US until I mentioned it.  She'd order fish, which is probably OK, in say Austin, at a BBQ place, though in that case I stepped in.

We took our future daughter in law and son to Fox Bros. here (BBQ) and she ordered chicken salad.  I think my step son might intercede but he didn't.  She's from Hong Kong and expected to get a lettuce like salad with grilled chicken, which of course isn't what they brought.  She ate about two bites.

I should have said something.  Their brisket is really good.

If they don't have it, that tells me to not order oysters.
