Do you recommend a trip to Korea? We've thought about it quite a bit.

What cites in Japan stood out?
Ive watched video on utube about the bullet trains in Japan and looks like it would be a lot of fun to ride
They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.

I've ridden the TCV a few times.  It's sort of interesting I think, but you get used to it quickly.  I'm not much of a fan of HSR in the US though.

As we were flying on American, I checked out their credit card, and obtained one.  The first year is free, and I got 50,000 miles for spending some money on it, so cool, but that much FF isn't good for much.

BUT, for 7900 miles, you can get into their lounge, which I did (2x).  The second year costs $99 so I'll cancel, but can use the miles for the lounge if we're on AA in the future.  I did the same with United but their card gives you two lounge visits a year.

I have a Delta AMEX I use for most things.  It comes with lounge admission, but is starting to cost too much.

They also carry up to 5,000 people, who really are not there to be transported in any normal sense.  I asked the chief engineer on our last cruise how much lube oil his engines had, I forget the answer, it was like 30 metric somethings, a lot, was it 30 metric meters?  He said they don't ever change the oil except during a full overhaul.

I wondered how long the engines last between majors.

How Big Is a Cruise Ship Engine? (cruisehive.com)

Modern, larger cruise ships use two or three stroke, low speed, crosshead, or medium speed engines. Engines operating at higher speeds tend to be found on smaller vessels. Determining the type of engine that is installed on a new cruise ship involves examining the engine’s size.

When it comes to cruise ships, the typical engine is a two 16-cylinder Wartsila 16V 46D which is a common rail engine. They also use three 12-cylinder Wartsila 12V 46D engines to power the ship. Each one of these produces about 19,480 kw of water.

Oil for Wärtsilä 46 series 16V46 (16800 kW) ME. Which oil is the best? Professional lubrication advice - Kroon-Oil

22,700 liters of lube oil per engine.  I think they should develop the antimatter drives used on Star Trek to save the environment.

That sounds reasonable to me for a huge Diesel.  I imagine they usually run at constant RPM and get excellent maintenance (one hopes).  I know Diesels on ~35 footers go for a premium over gas.  My friend in Wisconsin had one of those but with 454 gasoline engines (2), as I recall.  He sold it finally.

Yup.  My buddy lived in Racine. WI while he was working, and then retired in Sturgwon Bay.   He had a boat the whole time, we visited them 5-6 years back and had the last ride on his boat before he sold it.  He also was the Chief Poohbah of the local boating group, whatever they called them.  He talked some about gas vs Diesel.

Reminds me of the old $50 hamburger stories pilots would tell,  which now would be $200.

Commodore.

Sturgeon Bay has some really nice marinas.

I found that belonging to a yacht club really wasn't worth it, for our uses.

The KYC (Kenosha) is mostly geared toward sailboats and racing.

Those people don't like my people much.

I noticed at DFW their "Sky Train" has to loop around the several terminals rather than taking a straight line (which would necessitate being buried).  I found this rather uncomfortable, I was standing and the train applies some lateral Gs around the curves, and it took some time as well.  We had to get from D to A for our flight.  (We had time.)

Immigration there seemed pretty normal to me, at least when we landed.

I've flown through DFW about a gazillion times,  but never internationally. I kinda like walking between the terminals when I have enough time. There are trains that go both ways and "they say" the max time from one end to the other is 9 minutes, but I don't know about that.

Skylink is a free light rail train that connects all five terminals and is the shortest route to your stop while inside of security.
  • Operates 24 hours a day
  • Trains arrive every two minutes
  • Average ride time of five minutes
  • Maximum ride time of nine minutes between farthest points
  • Easy access to shops and restaurants in other terminals
  • No ticket or pass needed

I've read the ATL train takes 7 minutes end to end.
