Sugar: #7 Notre Dame 23, #2 Georgia 10 Post Game
« on: December 24, 2024, 01:10:28 PM »
Seriously, no thread for this one, yet?
I don't have anything especially useful to say about it. Hope it's a good game. I want Notre Dame to win, but worry about how that will turn SFIrish into an irrationally exuberant fan over a team/game that she hasn't paid any attention to in years.
Georgia sure looks like the real deal, but: quarterback?
Notre Dame didn't have any real trouble with Indiana. Probably shouldn't have let IU start to make people nervous with the last two touchdown drives in garbage time, but, hey, gotta do something for the ratings. If IU was a moderately good team (which I think is probably the general concensus) Notre Dame's victory should get some creedence--much like its win over aTm. On the other hand, NIU (and Ole Miss!?!).

I get that, but it does have implications for the three B1G teams still in this thing.

Without Beck, Smart can play up the 'us against the world' thing, which has tended to yield good results (in the few times he could play that card).

If ND can't run, they can't win.  This is NOT the same UGA team or defense from the past few years, but it doesn't have to be.  ND is one-dimensional going in, which makes Smart's job easier.  The ND coaches could possibly use that to surprise and pass more early on, but Leonard does not seem to be able to drop back and find a guy very often.  He's an athlete playing QB, and many (half?!?) of his dropbacks turn into scrambles.  That won't work vs UGA.

ND's best sack artist/DL is out for the playoffs. Got hurt against IU.

All kinda rests on Stockton. He’s real talented, if he can ball, ND is in a world of hurt.

If he’s not it … UGA is trying to win 7-3.

Ordinarily I only root for Notre Dame when they play the evil cheaters but this might give me a reason to consider it here.

It has been my experience that the truly dominant college football team--the one that dominates all comers--is pretty rare. There are some examples that seemed like it, but most of them turned out to just be very, very good, relative to their peers, not necessarily other worldly.

All of the remaining teams likely fit into that category: very, very good. I guess I have my doubts about Boise State and Arizona State, but everyone else here "belongs" in the sense that they have lots of very talented players, good coaching, and are capable of wins over very good teams.

I think Georgia is probably better than Notre Dame, but probably not 2014 Alabama vs. 2014 catfished Notre Dame better. And even the better team is perfectly capable of losing one game to an inferior opponent. (See NIU and Ole Miss.)

I just don't think we've ever had game threads for non-Big Ten games.  Not that we can't, but that's probably why there wasn't one

We haven't. The SOC kinda absorbs those other games. I don't care one way or another. We have a Dawg fan or three here.
