So, exactly to my expectations, I did watch our game, even staying up late to finish after a weather delay and an uncompetitive contest.  Though I didn't have the pre-game butterflies I used to.  I didn't know a great many players.  I didn't care that I didn't know a great many players.

Still, I loved seeing the atmosphere....I love the uniforms and the stadium and hearing the familiar songs when the band plays.  I find I still root for them in some way.  I can't root for the individuals since I don't know them that well, but there is something inside me that still loves to see that uniform, on that field, and wants that team to succeed.  However detached I am from the finer points I no longer follow or jive with, whatever I think about the staff and the program's current modus operandi, there's something familiar about the scene that feels like home and evokes a lot of great memories from yesteryear.

I guess I'll always root for them in some way, even if I don't feel the excitement I used to, the heartache of a loss like I used to, or care for the direction of the sport.  The outcomes of their games interest me in a way that other games don't, and that's still some level of fandom.  I'm probably not capable of putting them aside for good or completely not caring about the seasons.  I'm also probably not capable of the elation a good win used to give me, but that's okay.  It's still entertaining, and that's enough.

My wife and I mentioned this specific possibility when the game was still going

I personally saw three people pass out at the IU game Saturday. I was 95, sunny, and humid in the stands and worse on the field. I read reports of 10-12 EMT runs being made to the stadium for people dealing with the heat. It was brutal.

Offering prayers that SF's marriage survives this opener.
Happy wife, happy life.

I was at the game and thought it was strange at the time that they completely cancelled all halftime activities.  Now it makes more sense.

That is very sad to hear.  Everybody was saying how dumb it was to start the game at 3:15  on a day with 95 degree heat and 105 heat index.  I know tv controls everything but Iowa should have had the option to either delay the start to after 7pm or start or move the start up to 9 am in the morning.
We are all equal but some are more equal than others.

They said on the turf it felt closer to 120.

I don't get how we delay games for lightning, but not for heat

When I first read the URL I was hoping it meant that the band member was taken off life support because they were better, before I remembered that is never how that phrase is used.

That is awful.

From the Hawkeye Band's FB page a little while ago. He didn't make it. Terrible, terrible, terrible.

Quote
To our Hawkeye Marching Band and School of Music family,

On Saturday, September 5, a student in our Hawkeye Marching Band family experienced a significant medical emergency, and this morning he passed away. Derek Phillips was our mellophone section leader, a beloved member of the School of Music horn studio, and the kind of friend, student, and musician that represents the very best of what it means to be a Hawkeye.
Losing a HMB family member is one of the most difficult tragedies we will experience. We are grateful to his parents, Sara and Brian, for providing regular updates throughout the weekend to HMB staff and the students who love him. We will continue to walk the journey together, and we will continue to provide support and resources to our students to ensure they are getting the care they need. The Hawkeye Marching Band and the School of Music are strong and resilient because of the people within. We appreciate the thoughts and well-wishes from so many members of our community.
Dr. Walker and I are grateful for the heroic actions of our athletic trainer, our police officers, university medical personnel, EMS, and our HMB students who responded immediately and provided assistance to Derek on-site before he was transported to UIHC.
Counselors will be on site in Voxman, and with the HMB all week. We encourage you to reach out to those around you and ask for support if you need it.
There is nothing more important than the safety of our students. Their well-being is always at the top of my mind. We are teaching them more than music and marching— and we are a family. I told the band on Saturday, when we gathered after we departed from Kinnick Stadium, “As a parent, the care I have for my own son extends to every single marching Hawkeye.”
This Saturday, and for the rest of our season, the Hawkeye Marching Band and School of Music will honor Derek’s memory, and we will communicate those details as they take shape.
The University of Iowa, the School of Music, and the Hawkeye Marching Band leadership will continue to provide support in the coming days, weeks, and months to students who need it. We understand that grief affects us in many different ways, and we are committed to supporting our students in whatever ways they need.
With much gratitude for our Hawkeye family,
Dr. Eric W. Bush
Director of the Hawkeye Marching Band
Associate Director of the School of Music

Dr. Tammie Walker
Director of the School of Music

I see you all have seen the story. I just heard it this afternoon. What a tragedy for this boy, his parents, and family. A good reminder to hydrate. I took this from the KCRG page linked. I just wanted to assure this young man is recognized, and is not just an unknown name on cfb51.com.
