2025 Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance First Test Review: A Half-Hearted Sport Sedan

From an engineering perspective, AMG’s latest lab-made monster is a technological marvel. This is easily one of the most complicated automotive powertrain to ever reach mass production, which might be why the car it powers is so difficult to comprehend. Saddled with a roughly 800-pound weight gain and lacking the V-8’s hallmark roar, the C63 S E Performance muddles its incredible power in a blur of contradictions: ferocious yet quieter. Refined but violent. Objectively awesome and subjectively disappointing. Simultaneously better and worse.

They didn't like it, which means little to me.  That is a very complex drive train.

Brad has opined before that PHEVs are unduly complicated, as are plain hybrids.  He's obviously correct, I'm not entirely sure what to make of that.  A regular car today is already complicated and they seem to last pretty well, but adding more "stuff" means MTBF on each component adds up, or subtracts down.

I've mentioned before, for me, "sporty" entails:

Convertible
Manual transmission
Higher revving engine
Not "too much" power (plenty of traction)
Rear wheel drive

A Miata covers the bases but I don't fit in one.

I thought the GTI was pretty sporty despite not being a CV and having FWD.  I recall driving Audis in 1978ish with FWD that were pretty bad.

This is an AMG C63. It makes 670 HP out of a 2.0L inline 4. No idea how that happens.

It's sort of interesting to muse about what one might buy with say $200 K, given you can't get rid of it for 5 years and it's your primary car, you can't have the difference.
