I mean, my dream car is the Shelby Cobra 427.

However, I wouldn't turn my nose up at a Shelby GT500 :57:

My dreams aren't so lofty, all I've ever wanted is a 65 or 66 Mustang convertible.  I don't even need the 289.

But of course if someone gave me the GT500 I'd take it...

2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse vs. BMW M2 Comparison Test: Unbridled Beasts Do Battle

Two pretty evenly matched pretty realistic competitors that would be unlikely to be cross shopped.

And they have a maual gear box.

I'd personally choose the M2.  I wouldn't mind a convertible if they made one.

Try an AMG C43 or C63. Lots of fun and also practical. I had one as a rental one time.

@Honestbuckeye can tell you all about the AMG C class. He owned one.
I was never interested in a Mustang, because they were not known for their steering and handling. That all changed in recent years with the GT500 Shelby.  That car was simply sick and how you could throw it around the corner or a curve and then hit straight line speed with 750 hp.  I had that car for about two years, but it was not fun to drive around in traffic and so I sold it.

Replaced him with a AMG 63SGT.  Much heavier than Mustang but could handle better than 99% of the cars on the road. Plus, it was 4matic ( Mercedes AWD system) So you could put the power down and launch regardless of the surface. Kept that one for about a year and a half and just recently sold it too.  Cars are a sickness for me so I buy and sell them pretty often

perhaps the best car I’ve ever owned is my current CT4-V Blackwing.  The handling is unbelievable as you can stick that thing in a corner and drift out of it with ease anytime you want to.  Car and driver does not rate cars 10 out of 10 and give it Car of the year three years in a row for nothing.  And the price is actually very reasonable compared to its competition

Typically great handling means a very stiff suspension and therefore a pretty stiff ride over bumps but General Motors figured out the magnetic ride control a few years back and it is spectacular and thus been copied by Lamborghini, Porsche, and many others.
Generally, if you want to understand, the car is handling capabilities go to car driver and read It’s skid pad performance.  It needs to be at or higher than 1.0 G’s on the skid pad.

Pricey. I like cars, but I'm not willing to spend that kind of money on them. Too practical to really be a car guy. It's one of the things that made the Mustang seem hopeful--it's affordable. Oh well.
Used is your friend. Get a CPO and it's like buying new except someone else took the beating off the lot.

Yes.   If you google “ Car and Driver CT4-V Blackwing” it is the whole article.

For some reason, it won’t let me paste it using my mobile phone

Better yet- go to Throttle House Car Reviews” on you tube.

They do a phenomenal job of short, concise reviews of cars, good in the bad, and are very entertaining and funny most of the time

Yes, the CT4V Blackwing.

2025 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing Review, Pricing, and Specs

One issue with skidpad results, they are useful, but can be "gamed".  I could take a car with a very rudimentary but hard suspension and put ultra stick tires on it and it would likely pull a lot of Gs on a smooth skidpad, but not handle very well on most unsmooth roads, and the steering might be crap.  But in general, it's a useful figure.

The nice thing about the above car is it's around $70 K decently equipped and comes basic with a manual transmission.  The back seat is pretty cramped, so don't expect to carry four adults on a road trip.  It probably is good for low 20s mpg on the highway using premium fuel, so not a sipper.

I was in my friend's CT5 recently and was surprised how small it felt.
