Our Caddy had two years of maintenance with it.  I paid for some oil changes, and a lot of tires.  That was the main reason I traded it, replacing $400 tires way too often.

The GTI had 3 years of oil changes, I paid for 2, that's when they wanted another $3 K for brakes and plugs.  i said no.

The Hyundai has 3 years of oil changes, it shouldn't need anything else for 3 years.  I expect the brakes to last "forever".

My buddy's Merc spends more time in the shop than any of my American cars, and costs considerably more to service. 

He also has a Vokswagen Passat, total POS, and also more expensive to service than American cars.

I'm honestly not sure why he keeps buying German, it's never worked out for him.

I remember spending Saturday afternoons on car maintenance back in the day.  We had two, and the '73 Nova needed stuff fairly often, like new plugs every 12,000 miles, and they were not fun to change.  Then it had points and a condenser and timing to check.  I changed the oil pretty often then, started using synthetic way back.  Lube jobs.  Coolant check.  Battery check.  It needed brakes and rotors at 73,000 miles.  I had them done.

My ex had a Chevette that was her graduation present, it was not fun.  But easy to work on at least.

I did a lot of the maintenance and repairs on my cars in high school and college.  The Dodge Omni and then the Chrysler Laser.  Everything was a lot more accessible then and no computers, and I had more time than money.

Sounds unlucky to me.

Mine is in the shop every 10K miles (15-16 months) and has almost never costs more than $500.00. Usually it's about $300.00.

One time it was $1,500.00 but that included timing belt replacement and a bunch of other stuff, at 70K miles.

I wouldn't say he's unlucky, most of the industry ratings don't regard Merc as being overly reliable.  Middle of the pack at best.

And Volkswagens in the USA are notoriously unreliable.

Badge, I'd reverse that an say that you perhaps are lucky, not that 94's buddy is unlucky. 

Think about it this way. Numbers made up. 

  • Over the first 5 years of ownership, let's say a vehicle with "very good" reliability has a 5 percent chance of needing a major repair.
  • Over the first 5 years of ownership, let's say a vehicle with "average" reliability has a 12 percent chance of needing a major repair.
  • Over the first 5 years of ownership, let's say a vehicle with "fair to poor" reliability has a 25 percent chance of needing a major repair. 

That means that assuming they keep their cars 5 years (not always the case with leasing/turnover/etc) the last group will have 75% of owners that don't encounter a major repair and to them, the 25% that do were just "unlucky". While it still being true that the last group will as an aggregate have much higher vehicle maintenance costs than the first group. 


I'd say that 94 is the one who got unlucky with that Solara he keeps talking about. Toyota is heralded across the globe for their reliability, and he just happened to buy one of the lemons. But his anecdotal data doesn't mean Toyota is more unreliable than Merc just because he got a lemon and you got one of the good ones.

God that Solara sucked.  Toyota lost a potential customer for life.  I'll never buy another Toyota product.

They had plenty of opportunity to make things right and never did.  So many thousands of dollars wasted at the dealership, at import car specialist mechanics, and my own time as well.  Went through at least 3 alternators and 4 batteries in maybe 8 years.  Internet searches showed it to be a common problem with the model, and they never acknowledged it or did anything to help other than take my money for fixing symptoms and never addressing root cause.


Eff Toyota, may they rot in hell for all eternity.

Interesting.

I know quite a few people who have M-B's and they are good, reliable cars. They are very popular around here.

Most of them are SUV's, made in Alabama. My sedan was made in Stuttgart.
