I've commented many times on this thread, I don't really care about "performance."  I'm not a speed guy, I'm not a track guy, so handling doesn't really factor into it either.  I'm just looking for a weekend cruiser.  I wouldn't even need the 289 although the exterior looks cooler with the 289 badge.

I have a friend with a '66 coupe.  It's been maintained but not modified.  I ride in it with him and drive it from time to time.  Sure, it's rougher than a modern car.  I don't really care.  To me it's a piece of rolling art work and I'm happy driving such a car, weekend cruising around the lake, top down, wind in my face.

So yeah I'm still good with my dream car.  But the modern Mustangs certainly are nice, I do enjoy driving my daughter's convertible.

As for true SUVs, I understand some people have a functional need for their attributes.  Most owners of them do not, and would be better off with a minivan, which they won't drive because of appearances.  Most owners of BMWs would be better off with a Honda Accord also (IMHO).

My wife told a young fellow his F-150 was a really nice looking truck yesterday.  He thanked her.  It probably cost him $80 K or more, it was a crew cab extended bad with some fancy labels on it.  It was clean.  I doubt he ever uses it functionally beyond an occasional tote of some furniture, would want to scratch it or get it dirty.

Yeah, I'm the opposite. I do care about performance, which is why I do NOT own a performance vehicle. Too much risk of unwanted legal attention!

I would absolutely love to have a track car. I am just not at a point where I have the means to have one unless it's a priority in my life, and I have too many other priorities in my life that I won't downgrade to have one.

I find this sort of statement judgmental and presumptuous.  You have no idea what someone else may "need."

Maybe they "need" to drive a car they find attractive.  So what?  It's not up to you to decide for other people, what they should or should not be driving.  Why would you even care?

Re-reading that, it sounded bitchier than I intended, so my apologies CD.  I was going to edit the post but decided I could post a follow-on to clarify:

It's nothing personal, I just really don't understand when people talk about whether someone else "needs" their car.  It's particularly prevalent with respect to pickups and SUVs, I hear people make snide comments regularly about whether a pickup driver will ever actually use the pickup, and I find it annoying.

Who cares?  Maybe that person was a huge "Fall Guy" fan and always wanted a pickup.  Maybe their granddad had a truck on his old ranch and it reminds that person of good times with a loved one.

You could say the same thing about someone driving a Cadillac-- they don't need that car when a Nissan Leaf will do.

Who needs a Corvette when a Toyota Corolla will do?

Who needs a Mercedes when a Ford Taurus will do?

Indeed this entire thread is frivolous and unnecessary.  Nobody NEEDS a sporty car.  A Yugo is sufficient to move you from point A to point B.

The entire notion of judging someone else's needs is just silly and presumptuous and it's more than a little insulting.  Just my opinion.

I am speaking to functional needs, which I think I can opine about.  A woman who uses a Tahoe excusively to drive on paved roads with a couple kids doesn't require a Tahoe to get the job done.

She's certainly welcome to own one, and I don't care that she does, at all.  I used to know a very petite lady who drove a Tahoe, she told me she liked being able to sit up high, which is a main "need" I hear a lot of folks express, including my wife.  She struggled to get in and out of the vehicle.  I guess being able to see out better could be considered a "need".  

And in fact, I have been annointed as THE person in the US to decide what other people need and are able to buy.  It's a new job for me.
