Rutgers (1-1, 0-1) at Iowa #20 (2-0, 1-0) (Postgame)

I had a different perspective from Row 1, today.

This was a well-played game by each team's Australian punter. They are 27 and 28 years old. They pinned the other team down near their own goal line repeatedly. The Rutgers punter more so than the Iowa punter but only because Iowa was punting from deep in its own territory sometimes, and Iowa punted fewer times. Iowa started inside the 5-yard line, regularly. I don't think this one quite made it inside the 5.

Iowa's Offensive Tackle Tristan Wirfs is a physical specimen like I have never seen before. He grew up about 45-miles from our little town and played in high school against our local high school. He is darned good. The entire offensive line works as a team this year. They gave up one sack, but QB Stanley was not otherwise hurried or threatened. To the extent Iowa had difficulty in the passing game, it seems to relate to the QB play. He is inconsistent. Iowa played four RBs, if you exclude the receiver who lined up as a tailback for one play, but didn't touch the ball that play. Last year's starter, Ivory Kelly-Martin is now 4th string, but he had a nice reception today

Rutgers put up 42 points on an FBS team last week. This week, Iowa shut out Rutgers 30-0. The Iowa defense was stingy. I was the most impressed by the defensive play of CB Michael Ojemudia. AJ Epenesa menaced the grilles of the Rutgers QBs.

I have not seen an Iowa team so deep in talent at key positions such as wide receiver, offensive line, and running back.

Iowa is not so deep at the defensive back positions, and I believe one of the starters has been out, but being down one DB hasn't affected them. If there are any other injuries back there it will. The results the first two weeks point toward an Iowa-Wisconsin showdown for the Big Ten West title.

It is a bit hard to see inside those windows with the naked eye, but yes there are patients, parents, family, and apparently surgical staff watching the game from across the street.

Kinnick does not allow fans to carry in lenses longer than 6", so you can't get your longest lenses in. They don't seem to kick anyone out who brings in a lens that telescopes like my carry around 18-250mm Tamron lens. So it has pretty good reach, and after cropping I could bring these folks to life.

We had a half-time performance by Pat Green singing "Wave on Wave." We sat in Row 1 in the NW corner of the end zone and saw two John Deere Gators trailer in massive speakers from under the west stands onto the field for the half-time show. They were set up in or near the South End Zone. We couldn't hear any singing or see him, so I had to tell my folks during half-time, you are supposed to wave, now. Apparently they can't plug him into the scoreboard sound system that can be heard clearly a mile away.

Ames got a bye today. It will be Game Day's first time in Ames.

The game should be close. I was rather impressed today by Iowa, and I suspect today's result will make Iowa favored. As long as Iowa will pass occasionally on first down they should be okay. It's when they turn the offense into their usual (1) Run, (2) Run, (3) Pass and Fail, that it gets very frustrating. Wisconsin loves Iowa for doing this.

I am impressed by Iowa State's QB recruiting. Brock Purdy is a 4* recruit, and when did they ever get a 4* QB in Ames from 1,400 miles away?

I think Iowa learned back in the 2015 Rose Bowl season it helps to have 4 capable RB's ready to carry the load.  At some point this season IKM will get his touches at RB.

True freshman Goodson shows some flashes but I have yet to see why he is getting more carries than a 3rd year experienced back.  Goodson I believe could use a year in the weight room and a year of practice before he hits his stride.

Here is the photo I like the best from Saturday. But it illustrates Iowa's inconsistency at QB. Wide open receiver overthrown by 4-yards.

It wouldn't be a true Ames experience for GameDAy (sorry to talk about next week in the post game Rutger thread) w/o some microclimate extreme weather.

You could be onto something. Extended forecast has 60% chance of precipitation for Saturday.

I'm too young to remember Reggie Roby boomin'em for Iowa, so Saturday marks the best punting performance I've ever witnessed in Kinnick. #PuntingIsWinning

The score doesn't show it, but Rutgers has improved. They've got some very nice skill players. They lack a QB, they're somewhat mediocre in the trenches, but the coaching was quite poor. Despite only recording one sack, AJ Epenesa absolutely terrorized their QB's, yet their OC refused to give the LT any help until mid-third quarter. I don't think they called any 3rd down screen plays or quick slants despite Iowa completely pinning their ears back. It was difficult to comprehend their thought process.

RU's punter might be their MVP.  I lost track of how many times Iowa got pinned inside their own 5.  Had the Hawks had better field position, it would have been a lot uglier than 30-0.

Thank you! One of my cousins came with us to the game and he is more of a photographer, although I would say I got a few good ones too. I will private message his flickr page.

I can't resist, I have a few more that turned out okay.

Here is the NE corner of the newly finished north end zone stands from outside the stadium.

Pregame festivities.

Did someone forget the snap count? I have a better copy if you click on the link below:

I didn't know that if you linked to a photo website the photo shows up here in some smaller image form.

The north end zone is not such a bad place to sit. Everything is scrunched forward on these tiers. One of the construction workers was telling me last week how proud they were of their work, what a great project it was, and that all the seats were so close to the field. Here is the mezzanine at the first level.
