Percent of Teams with 1st loss of the Season:
Week 0/1: 36.0% (49 of 136)
Maximum number of Undefeated Teams at the End of the Regular Season:
11*: Our number is down 1 spot from last week as Notre Dame can no longer end up undefeated. That leaves us the possibility of one undefeated in each of the 9 FBS conferences, Washington State and UConn.
Note: As I am not sorting through all the schedules, I am continuing with the assumption that there are no more than 1 undefeated team per conference. There are many (fairly unlikely) scenarios where we could have three undefeated teams in a conference before conference championship games so technically this number is low. For simplicity, I am going to ignore that possibility for at least the first few weeks and maybe longer.
Week 0/1 Thoughts:
-It's always good to have football back.
-Let's start with what won't be the biggest national news, but the game that might have impacted playoffs participants/conferences more than any other single game. Boise State lost badly in their opener to South Florida. The American and the Mountain West, for one more year, are the two strongest conferences top to bottom in the Group of 5 and most likely to take the spot. Boise State had it last year and has been the flag bearer for the conference so them losing to an American school to open the season is significant. It's certainly not close to the end of the tale, but was a big opening victory for the American.
-The ACC had a strong weekend at the top with Florida State and Miami winning ranked games. If Clemson had won, it would have been even stronger, but as is, the conference looks better for multiple higher playoff bids than it did lots of last year.
-LSU winning against Clemson ended up somewhat significant for the SEC. There are limited out of conference games and the SEC having 3 of its preseason top 4 lose week 1, might well have stung a bit come playoff selection time. As it is, the bag looks more mixed, with Texas losing against what became the #1 team in the country on the road, Alabama being stunned by Florida State, but LSU delivering a major win and the rest of the top looking good. For Alabama, the wolves are out now, but I think it is still too early to make any major judgments on them. We are passed the Saban era and there are losses going back to last season we haven't seen from them in a long time, but I still won't be stunned if they right thing at least fairly decently from here.
-The Big 12 to me is once again the most even conference toward the top so seeing how they start is revealing. From the bigger games this week, we saw that: 1. Utah was supposed to do well last year and did the opposite, but started this year off with a strong win over UCLA. 2. Iowa State has looked really good through two games including a win week 0 vs. Kansas State. 3. Colorado has not made the jump the conference would love to see happen, losing to Georgia Tech. 4. TCU put on a show vs. North Carolina.
-Ohio State's win gives the Big Ten the #1 and #2. If neither lose before, a very real chance exists Penn State vs. Ohio State would be #1 vs. #2.
-Shout out to Kirk Ferentz who ties Woody Hays for the most wins for a Big Ten coach. He's the only coach left in the conference who was coaching before I was seriously following football and he was there several years before that.
Week 2 Thoughts:
-By my quick count, there were 24 games between undefeated teams this week.
Illinois at Duke: Illinois is ranked 11th in the country, but is less than a field goal favorite here.
Iowa at Iowa State: Iowa State is a strong competitor for the top of the Big 12 again. Winning the instate game would help the Big Ten with an extra playoff spot if in competition with the Big 12.
Kansas at Missouri: The return of the Border War!
South Florida at Florida: Florida is the big favorite here, but South Florida beat Boise State last week and even if keep this game close have to be considered definite contender for the Group of 5 playoff spot.
Arizona State at Mississippi State: Last year's Big 12 champion at around a touchdown favorite here. Game will help show if last year's success spills into this year.
Michigan at Oklahoma: I always viewed these two schools similar in some rivalry kind of way. They both have a big rival a state below them who naturally has better recruiting grounds, but that often doesn't matter for the rivalry game. This game is big for Big Ten vs. SEC reasons. A win will help give more benefit of the doubt to either conference.
San Diego State at Washington State: A preview of a conference game next year.
Remaining Undefeated Teams: ACC: 12, American: 9, Big 12: 12, Big Ten: 16, Conference USA: 6, MAC: 4, Mountain West: 5, PAC-12: 1, SEC: 14, Sun Belt: 7, independents: 1, total: 87
