Questions
« on: September 26, 2022, 08:17:12 AM »
Is UGA as good as they looked twice, or as mediocre once.

Is Ohio State now cooking with grease?

Is Michigan for real, USC, UCLA?

How many currently in the top ten will end up unranked.

What was up in that Bama-Texas game?

Are UK and Tenn really top ten teams?  Or do we just not have anyone worthy to replace them?

Why did Wake drop 5 spots in one poll after basically tying the #5 ranked team?

Arky dropped TEN spots in the AP after missing a doink late on the road against a ranked opponent.

Why should anyone care about polls at this point?

I think Michigan's win over Maryland will eventually be looked upon as a quality win.  Maryland is a good team.  Is Michigan really the 4th best team in the US?  I don't think so at this point but they will get better.

I already look at it as a quality win.
Michigan won with less than their “A” game.
unfortunately it’s still a beauty contest.

I think Michigan and OSU and PSU can play with anyone ranked in top 10.   If Texas can take Bama to the wire and Kent State can hang with Georgia for 3 Qs, it illustrates that no team is unbeatable.

What was up in that Bama-Texas game?
Bama got gifted,2 simultaneous horrifically inaccurate calls in the end zone no less.Texas not only had a safety taken away but then got jobbed with two flags - that got recanted .Bryce Young appeared to be taken down in the end zone for what seemed like points that would have given Texas a 12-10 lead in the third quarter. The officials somehow turned it into a roughing the passer and targeting penalty for a few minutes.
Then, the referee announced he had been mistakenly informed of the infractions and it was fourth down for the Tide. The play turned into an incomplete pass although it looked as if Young was throwing it to absolutely nowhere.Just another huge game where the officials somehow inserted themselves into the action. Sad.

Computer rankings still exist but barely get noticed.

College football team ratings 2022 - Jeff Sagarin Ratings (usatoday.com)

Jeff has LSU and Utah Top Ten.

IMHO, probably as good as they looked twice but it is too early to tell for sure. Flukes happen. Teams have good and bad days. The smart monet says UGA had an off day against Kent and Kent had a good day against UGA.

Is Ohio State now cooking with grease?

Basically same as above. My Buckeyes looked phenomenal against UW and at least the offense did against Toledo as well but it is early. Maybe UW sucks (I don't think so but it is a possibility).

Is Michigan for real, USC, UCLA?

So hard to tell. Nobody knows how good Maryland is and they have this odd recent history of being a high-end team in September then looking like crap later which complicates things also. I haven't followed enough PAC to even venture a guess on the two B1G schools in waiting.

How many currently in the top ten will end up unranked.

Probably none. Nine of them are 4-0 and one is 3-0. They are all at least decent and even .500 (4-4) from here would get them to 8-4 and borderline ranked in December.

What was up in that Bama-Texas game?

My best guess is that Bama started a little slow this year and Texas simply had a really good game.

Are UK and Tenn really top ten teams?  Or do we just not have anyone worthy to replace them?

I doubt it but at this point both are 4-0 with at leat one quality win (Florida for both) so they get those spots until proven otherwise.

Why did Wake drop 5 spots in one poll after basically tying the #5 ranked team?

This has been a pet peeve of mine for a long time. If you are #21 and you push #5 to OT, IMHO you should move up.

Arky dropped TEN spots in the AP after missing a doink late on the road against a ranked opponent.

I think this one is more complex and justified. aTm's ranking was mostly due to their win over Miami but the Hurricanes got spanked at home by a G5 so that makes aTm look worse than they already did. Consequently, Arky's loss to them isn't much of a "quality loss" so Arkansas got dinged.

Why should anyone care about polls at this point?

Well . . . No because the poll that matters isn't out yet.

Agree, I think we don't know much yet, a little certainly.  If UK wins this weekend at Ole Miss, they are almost assured of 9-3 with losses at UGA/UT/MSU, and they could easily go 1-2 with those three.

IF.

Won’t try to speak for all the others, can only speak for Michigan.

They will not be what they can be on offense until RB Donovan Edwards and TE Erick All come back healthy and they get the play calling sorted out. Edwards will be back soon, All may or may not be done for the year- depends on if he needs back surgery- and I have very little faith in Harbaugh to sort out the offensive play calling.

As far as the defense goes- they have a VERY good secondary- above average LBs- and well their entire DL outside of two guys- Mazi Smith and Mason Graham- who is a true freshman- looks pretty bad. I don’t see anything out of their DL and their edge rushers well kinda suck.

I see a couple losses on this schedule- probably @Iowa and @OSU.

0. Florida Gators 4-0 986 (9)
9. Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3-1 996 (10)
8. Wisconsin Badgers 4-0 1046 (8)
7. Auburn Tigers 5-0 1186 (7)
6. Oklahoma Sooners 4-0 1264 (6)
5. LSU Tigers 4-0 1322 (4)
4. Ohio State Buckeyes 5-0 1324 (5)
3. Georgia Bulldogs 4-0 1375 (3)
2. Clemson Tigers 5-0 1426 (1)
1. Alabama Crimson Tide 5-0 1478 (2)

From 2019, the last normal year really.  Auburn ended 9-4 and 14th.  I think that was the furthest drop in rankings.

Cincy, you're the only one not ultra-high on UGA.  The rest of the universe thinks they're the best team.  Enjoy your success, stop nitpicking.

Iowa doesn't have the horsepower or know-how to beat Michigan. I am thinking Michigan by 18.

Quite a few voters didn't have UGA #1.  They continue to run block poorly IMHO which is a concern, especially against the Kent States of the world.

I don't think they go unscathed.  My real point is that we still have a lot of questions at this point.
