Last week in parenthesis...

  • WISCONSIN (1) - only top team to emerge without question marks
  • OHIO STATE (3) - need to cut out the mental mistakes
  • MICHIGAN STATE (2) - thought I'd drop them farther, then PSU and UM looked just as shaky
  • PENN STATE (4) - the Appy State QB was making perfect throws, so I won't hold that against them as much as how bad the OL looked
  • NORTHWESTERN (7) - probably picked up the best win of the conference, unfortunately for the conference is was cannibalism
  • IOWA (6) - may lose some luster if NIU isn't who I expect them to be
  • MICHIGAN (5) - not so much a product of them looking bad, as them looking about the same as last year, and Iowa and Northwestern both looking very good
  • MARYLAND (9) - you got our attention Terps, now time to build on it
  • PURDUE (8) - again, not so much as they looked bad, as Maryland looked really good
  • NEBRASKA (10) - N/A
  • MINNESOTA (11) - ok to be cautiously optimistic about the offense?
  • INDIANA (12) - road wins can never be taken for granted
  • RUTGERS (13) - at least seem firmly better than Illinois, and they may finally have a QB
  • ILLINOIS (14) - oh no, even the defense is bad now

This goes against every single take I've seen on the game.  Did you watch the same game?
57+ minutes to score their first offensive TD.
1.8 yards per carry
The backup QB threw 6 passes, and suddenly UM has 2 QBs?

You should work for a certain news channel with that spin.
MSNBC?

1) Ohio State: until someone knocks them off or something really crazy happens.
2) Wisconsin: honestly, they sleep-walked through that game. Sure they won, but shouldn't they? And sure it wasn't ever in doubt, but would any other result be acceptable? If this is really a top-5 team, they need to look better next week. Looked like a glorified scrimmage to me.
3) Michigan State? Maybe? Yes, Utah State is probably better than we thing, but still...
4) Penn State: credit for eeking out the win and scoring in a hurry when they needed to. Lost a lot of credit for needing overtime.
5) Michigan: they lost on the road to the best team anyone in the conference played. They clawed back from a disastrous first half in which the perennially overrated Notre Dame offense carved up their "all-world" defense. (Did you spot the sarcasm in there?) They scored one offensive touchdown. Not impressive, but played a rivalry game on the road against a team with more than just a pulse. Color me unimpressed, but their defense is still good enough to make them better than teams that beat up on (or survived) powder puffs, Texas, and Purdue.
6) Iowa: because the only teams arguably with better results are Maryland and Northwestern, and one week isn't enough to move them up.
7) Northwestern: because Texas probably isn't that good.
8) Maryland: because Texas probably isn't that good.
9) Nebraska: new coach, new system, weather delay. Could really surprise us. Probably just mediocre, and still probably deserve to be (and will be) higher than this.
10) Minnesota: because a close loss hasn't convinced me that Purdue is that much better.
11) Purdue: because they performed better than I expected based on the last few years.
12-14) Illinois, Rutgers, Indiana (in no particular order): winning is better than losing.

So UW went out and won its game by 31 points (34-3), most of which were scored in the first half.

When UW does that, they get dropped a spot in the AP poll, like this week.

When UW does that, they get dropped a spot in the AP poll, like this week.
And the team that bumped UW down a spot, scored 77 in their dominant win and still got bumped down a spot in the coaches poll. (Coaches poll moved UW up one in that poll, so kinda a wash for the badgers.)
We can play the boo-hoo UW isn't a helmet card this week if we want to, but it doesn't seem hold up very well.
Instead let's play the boo-hoo everyone hates on the B1G. In the AP poll B1G dropped 14 (OSU+1, UW -1, PSU - 3, MSU -4, UM - 7) spots in the rankings this week while SEC jumped up 19 ('bama --, Georgia --, Auburn +2, LSU +14, Miss St --, S. Carolina +2, Florida +1)

ACC dropped 12
Pac dropped 1
B12 went up 1

OSU probably dropped in the coach poll because it gave up too many to a middling team. They got bumped up in the AP because they scored 77 and UW "only" scored 34.

7. Northwestern- clearly capable of hanging with anyone in the league.
9. Iowa- traditional slow start was slightly better. Easily see them moving up
You left off #8 and forgot to rank Minnesota.  For the time being I have assumed that you meant to rank Minnesota 8th.

1 Maryland - they earned their week in the Sun
14 Nebraska - has to spend a week here, after "cancelling" (forfeiting) the Akron game.
Do you honestly believe that Maryland is the best and Nebraska is the worst team in the league?

!.  Wisky
2.  OSU

Then a drop:

3.  I don't have a 3.  Maybe Maryland.

4.  PSU - nice OT win
5.  MSU
6.  NW
7.  Purdue
8.  Michigan - have to put them somewhere.
9.  Iowa
10.  Whatever
Same note as last week (I just posted it today though, sorry):  I only count votes in the compilation if they are complete.

Inc. - Nebraska.  Scott Frost’s debut will have to wait another week.
Same note as above:  I only compile complete ballots.

  • Wisconsin:  They are the only one of my top teams that looked the part.
  • Ohio State:  Giving up 31 to OrSU is a major concern and would have dropped them further if not for PSU, MSU, and M's struggles.
  • Michigan:  I'm not sure about this but for now I think that losing close on the road to ND is probably better than barely escaping USU or Appalachian State.
  • Michigan State:  Hopefully USU is really good or maybe that was just a week-1 fluke?
  • Penn State:  At least they pulled it out, but needing OT to escape ApSt can't be a good thing.
  • Northwestern:  Got a quality road win.
  • Maryland:  It is possible that Texas is just THAT BAD but hopefully at least some of that result is attributable to Maryland improving.
  • Iowa:  We'll see.
  • Nebraska:  We'll find out when they actually play.
  • Purdue:  Tough home loss.
  • Indiana:  Got a road win.
  • Minnesota:  Rowing the boat . . .
  • Rutgers:  At least they look better than
  • Illinois:  Ugh
