PowerPuff Rankings: Week One
« on: September 02, 2018, 07:16:43 AM »
1. Wisconsin: Honestly, the only team in the "top 5" that didn't show any crippling flaws.

2. Ohio State: Offense was on point, but defense brought back flashes of 2013 and Iowa 2017.  Not going to work against a team with a pulse.

3. Michigan State: Secondary, offensive line were major issues, but Lewerke and the receivers have something going.

4. Michigan: Point - lost.  Counterpoint - played an actual team.  Defense seemed to get sorted out, but offense still in the gutter.

5. Penn State: Didn't like much of anything I saw out of them  Defense was bad.  OFfense seems to have lost their mojo from last year.

6. Northwestern: Very nice job going into Purdue and pulling out a win.

7. Nebraska: The Lord beat Scott Frost.

8. Purdue: QB situation not ideal.  But if one of those guys can play the team can't point up.

9. Maryland: Very nice win, just like last year.  Can they keep their heads, stay healthy, and be a formidable team this year?

10. Minnesota: Rowed the boat to a comfortable win, which was in short supply for this group.

11. Iowa: They should probably be higher but I totally forgot about them and don't feel like editing.   Also they were up 3-0 at halftime on Northern Illinois.

12. Rutgers: A nice win is a nice win, no matter who they play.

13. Indiana: Not exactly domination of FIU

14. Illinois: Comeback win over...Kent State.

1. Wisconsin- looked solid on both sides of the ball
2. Michigan- played a top tier opponent on road at night, did not bring their “A” game and still could have won.  Defense gave up a fluke TD on an arm punt, but looked solid otherwise. Offense was way better than people are acting like it was, and UM now has TWO solid QBs.  Still my favorite to win the conference, especially if Harbaugh lets Shea run more spread.
3. Ohio State- hard to tell much from cupcake opponent, but offense looks crisp. Back seven looked bipolar, but missing their two most sure tacklers in Borland and Fuller.
4. MSU- famous for slow starts, and rising to opponent level.  They will be a bitch for anyone who plays them.
5. Penn State- thrilling team with McSorley, will have some barn burners.
6. Maryland- showed awesome guts and character- no patsy for anyone.
7. Northwestern- clearly capable of hanging with anyone in the league.
9. Iowa- traditional slow start was slightly better. Easily see them moving up
10. Nebraska- I see Frost working some 1st year magic- will be better than 10th
11. Purdue - looked damn good to me and could have won. Nobody wants to play them and for good reason.
12. Rutgers- I also see them moving up- they have solid coach
13. Indiana - probably better than this
14. Illinois- could struggle a lot this season.
Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

This goes against every single take I've seen on the game.  Did you watch the same game?
57+ minutes to score their first offensive TD.
1.8 yards per carry
The backup QB threw 6 passes, and suddenly UM has 2 QBs?

You should work for a certain news channel with that spin.

What do you mean? Maryland kicked @ss!
So the question is:
Is Maryland the second best team in the B1G-E, or are they the best?

1. OSU
Is it safe to say they have the best offense in the Big Ten?

2. Wisc
Is it safe to say they have the best defense in the Big Ten?

3. PSU
Is it safe to say that there are no good candidates for #3 based on week 1 but...
Is it safe to say Mcsorley is the most clutch guy in the last 2 minutes?

4.  MSU
Is it safe to say that MSU always starts slow?

5.  NW
It is safe to say that NW has the only Big Ten conference win so far.

6. IOWA
Is it safe to say that Iowa has a great defense?

7.  MD
Is it safe to say that OSU and MD really didn't miss their coaches this week

8.  Mich
Is it safe to say that Mich is over-rated again?

9.  Pur
10.  Rut
11.  Indy
12.  Neb
13.  Minn

Contenders

1 Maryland - they earned their week in the Sun

2 Ohio State - game was never in question, even while giving up long TDs left and right.

3 Wisconsin - steamrolled a directional KY school.

4 Penn State - Unlike Michigan, they survived a scare from Appy State.

5 Michigan State - the Blue Aggies are better than they are getting credit.

Pretenders

6 Northwestern - Kept their dark horse B1G West hopes alive

7 Iowa - Steamrolled a perennial Mac title contender

8 Michigan - I had them losing to ND when I put them at 5 last week, so they didn't drop so much as other teams wound up being a little stronger than I expected.

9 Purdue - Dropping the Wildcat game at home ought to squelch any title talk.

10 Minnesota - the Red Aggies really are that bad.

11 Rutgers - handled G5 opponent soundly

12 Indiana - double digit road win; albeit vs a G5.

13 Illinois - survived scare from the Golden Flashes

14 Nebraska - has to spend a week here, after "cancelling" (forfeiting) the Akron game.

  • Wisconsin (3)
  • Northwestern (8)
  • Indiana (11)
  • Iowa (6)
  • Purdue (7)
  • Michigan State (1)
  • Penn State (5)

10.    Maryland (14)
11.    Minnesota (9)
12.    Nebraska (10)
13.    Rutgers (13)
14.    Illinois (12)
It is a strong conference from #s 2-13. The Big Ten has some defenses.  Ohio State does not escape the season unscathed. Wisconsin didn't really play anyone yet.

With one week of data, these are still pretty fluid. I applied my no one moves more than 3 spots guideline, (Mainly to keep from knee jerk reacting to put Maryland at 1)

1) Wisc (+1) - looks solid all around
2) PSU (-1) - so close to having Appy State part 2
3) OSU (+2) - O looked incredible, D had issues
4) MSU (--) - Utah state that good?
5) Mich (-2) - Did not look good for most of the game

6) Iowa (--) - Solid
7) Nebraska (--) - No Data
8) Northwestern (--) - squeaked out win over Purdue

9) Maryland (+3) - is Texas bad or an unhurt Maryland that good.

10) Purdue (-1) - looked good in loss
11) Minnesota (-1)
12) Indiana (-1)

13) Rutgers (+1) - looked less bad than Illinois
14) Illinois (-1) - Dumpster Fire
