Powder Rankings After Week One

1. Penn State: No question marks here.  Offense picked up right where it left off and the defense played great.  A Penn State with a great defense is the best team in the B1G. Could be a while before they are challenged as Pitt looked like garbage in their opener.

2. Ohio State: Took a while to get going, but look committed to throwing the ball around.  Overall not a bad debut but Oklahoma is coming to town so that will answer a lot of question marks.

3. Michigan: Defense obliterates an inept offense.  Offense grinds out a win.  Biggest surprise was their effective running game.  A Michigan that can run the ball consistently is a playoff contender.  Though Randy Shannon is kind of known for soft run defenses, so might have to keep that in the "we shall see" pile.

4. Wisconsin: Looked pretty crappy for a half, but then got it turned around.  Now turns it sight to Lane Kiffin and the FAU Owls.

5. Michigan State: Looked strong in their opener, despite some turnover issues which made it closer than it was.  Interesting game with WMU coming up, who gave USC all they wanted.

6. Iowa: Pretty Iowa performance against a decent Wyoming team.  Defense played really well.

7. Maryland: Goes down to Texas and pulls off the win.  Didn't see the game but from the sound of it the lines are much improved, which was their downfall last year.  Rushing attack could give them a puncher's chance against any team.

8. Northwestern: Came back against the Wolfpack.  Looks to be another Northwestern year.

9. Nebraska: Got all they wanted from Arkansas State.

10. Indiana: Maybe? They came out throwing a million times against OSU, and they have a good QB and at least one NFL receiver.  But they also couldn't block for anything.  Defense looked good at times.  

11. Purdue: I mean, maybe? Gave Louisville all they wanted.  

12. Minnesota: Didn't look all that great, but hey, they rowed the boat.

13. Rutgers: Didn't embarrass themselves.

14. Illinois: Blech

Have not seen enough to separate Badgers, Wolverines and Buckeyes yet as I think all three look pretty good under differing circumstances.  

Penn State is number one for me until proven otherwise and Maryland has earned the spot right on the heels of those mentioned.

1. Michigan - The offense is good enough so long as Speight isn't making bad throws and the running game was much more effective on the edges.
2. Ohio State - Didn't look good early but dominated late
3. Penn State - They dominated Akron, but I'm not sure that means much.
4. Wisconsin - Started badly and then dominated the second half.
5. Maryland - Not sure how good they are but apparently much better than I expected.
6. Iowa - Dominated a decent Wyoming team
7. Michigan State - Only here by default for now. Western Michigan and Notre Dame will be more telling if they're any good.
8. Indiana - Better than I expected on offense but worse defensively. Not sure about this team yet.
9. Nebraska - Arkansas State is one of the better Sun Belt teams, to be fair.
10. Northwestern - Not a good sign that they struggled with Nevada, but the Cats usually look bad early in the season for some reason.
11. Purdue - Definitely surprised that they were able to compete with Louisville.
12. Minnesota - Struggling with Buffalo is a bad sign.
13. Rutgers - I'll give them some credit for challenging Washington.
14. Illinois - At least they won, though.

I don't feel that we learned much this week to change my rankings.  MSU did better than I expected.  Lots teams struggled early and then dominated in 4Q when they needed to.  This week was not a big game changer.

I am thinking Cubit's price tag, and coaching experience at Illinois, in retrospect, look pretty good to Illinois fans.

Here's my thoughts:

1.  Penn State (1)- Only because the defense looks better than I hoped.  It was only Akron, though.
2.  Ohio State (2)- They actually have a good running back.  I was never a big believer in Weber, but Dobbins is the real deal.  They would move to #1, but their passing game looks to be even worse than I thought, which keeps them at #2 for now.
3.  Michigan (4)- They beat a quality opponent, and their defense looks incredible.  The offense needs help.
4.  Wisconsin - (3) - I almost left them at 3, but Michigan deserves to be rewarded for beating a quality opponent.
5.  Maryland (11) - Maybe Texas is hot garbage, but I doubt it.  I think we may have overlooked Maryland, and the improvement of their team in the coach's second year.
6.  Iowa (6)
7.  Northwestern (7)
8.  Michigan State (9)
9.  Nebraska (5)
10.  Minnesota (8
11.  Indiana (10) - moving up after a "quality loss" for the next 3 teams.

It was a better opponent than pretty much every B1G team played week 1.
Outside of Rutgers who played Washington, Purdue who played Lousiville, and Maryland who played a Texas team that is in complete rebuild mode, everyone else in the B1G played absolutely nobody.

not yet - not enuff information after one game, besides those kids won't be suspended the entire season
same goes for the Longhorns - the Horns might make big strides in the next few weeks

They are routinely one of the best defenses in the country, this year isn't likely to be different.
Offense is hot garbage, but let's not act like their D isn't almost certainly the stiffest test any B1G team faced, and one of the best Michigan is going to see this year.

outside of Ohio State- Michigan won't see athletes on defense like that all year long. Florida has a bunch of guys on that defense that will play in the NFL.

It was week one. Florida is going to get better- they still have a great shot at the SEC East. Not exactly a murderers row there. Those 10 guys probably are not going to be suspended all year long. Getting the two starters back- WR Callaway and RB Scarlett back will jump start the offense immediately- those guys are both excellent offensive players- their best players on offense hands down- and getting the other 8 will help improve depth. Franks has serious arm talent. Nowhere to go for that offense but up. They need to fix the breakdowns they had at OL and if they get rid of Nussmeier ASAP they'll improve the offense drastically immediately. Been saying it for awhile- Nuss is hot garbage. He can take talent that should make for even a mediocre, functional offense and make it downright terrible. That's been his MO just about everywhere he's been.
