What no one is talking about with hockey is that it has all the same problems that football is facing (concussions, hits to the head, checking from behind, etc). On top of that, it's terrifically expensive. A friend has a couple of sons in mites, and the cost of ice time alone is more than his mortgage. When the Edina youth hockey organization is worried about cost of entry, you know there's a cost issue.

Even in Minnesota, the supposed state of hockey, it's a niche sport. For the 15-16 school year in Minnesota, boys ice hockey is a badly beaten 8th in number of kids participating (FB, T&F, basketball, baseball, soccer, wrestling, XC, hockey in that order).

Lacrosse is indeed growing like a weed around here. Or at least it is based on the number of emails I get from the MSHSL begging for officials.

I didn't realize costs are so high that hockey isn't all that popular of a youth sport in the hockey states.  That sucks.

Off the cuff, it'd be great to see Purdue and (I think all but PSU and OSU) add Men's volleyball.  I don't think we have women 's LAX, I'd like to see both added.

Purdue has great club crew, would be cool to see it added as a sport.

Yeah, I've heard that hockey is just about the most expensive sport out there. TONS of equipment necessary, usually expensive, pretty much all of which needs to be replaced every year as a kid grows.
Football in comparison is IMHO cheaper. I remember when I played as a kid, helmets and shoulder pads were owned by the league and re-used. Pants, cleats, jock, etc were all relatively cheap compared to all the pads needed for hockey. And football is the other "expensive" sport as it is, but still a lot cheaper.
Then you add in the fact that you need ice time. Football, soccer, etc can be played on fields. Basketball/volleyball can be played in a gym (or outdoors) and don't need constant cooling to keep the playing surface from liquefying.
It's kinda sad because I think hockey is a much more fast-paced, exciting sport than soccer [even though I don't follow hockey], probably safer than football in the long run, yet it prices out most kids.

Add Australian Rules Football.

Get rid of men's basketball.  Maybe they did already.

Ehh, I have a 7 year old 2nd year Mite and his cost was $565 for the season.  Hour long practices twice a week from October until March plus about 14-16 weekend games.  Tournaments are not included in that fee.  The league has equipment you can rent for $50 a year (except for skates).  Most Mites have their own equipment (Play It Again Sports is your friend here).  Granted it his costs will probably be over a $1000 when he is a squirt and up but it's not so bad right now.  It is definitely an expensive sport compared rec sports but compared to Little League, club soccer and club lacrosse, it is all about the same.  Especially since the hockey season is about 6 months.  A lot of high level youth sports are stupid expensive.  A competitive traveling soccer team here in Madison is well over a $1000 for the season once they get around U10 or so.  Heck, my 4 year old daughter's gymnastics costs an arm and a leg.

City rec programs are cheaper but a lot of times you get what you pay for, in my experience so far.

I found this recent article explaining the reasons Wisconsin is the only Big Ten university without a baseball program, and why it also cut men's and women's gymnastics in 1991. Bringing back dormant baseball program unlikely

This article also explains that Wisconsin doesn't plan to bring these sports back, even though there are some would like to see them.

I continue to believe if women's gymnastics were properly promoted it could become a break-even sport financially. It isn't promoted at the collegiate level at most schools. If Iowa, for example, hired Shawn Johnson to coach women's gymnastics, I would guess they would fill the arena at least half-full for most meets. They would have to be willing to invest, and promote.

Although I love the sound of  Icedogs  ( in Georgia it would sound like Ahcedawgs)  men's soccer is the sport I would like to add.

And yes there  are several SEC schools where women's gymnastics sell out regularly.  UGA, UF, LSU and Bama for sure and Auburn and UK get good crowds as well. I'm not sure about Arky.

I think UNL is missing the long term play of not having men's soccer.  UNL's women's sports will be expanded to offset Frost's desire to increase football rolls to 140-150 players per season... and that will trump any other expansion.   But soccer is growing and football is shrinking.   I don't expect Football ever to be anything but #1 in $$$ or viewership, but others are going to make up ground.   I think 20 years from now, people will ask why UNL doesn't have a soccer team and suggesting it needs one asap.   jmo

Entropy, I don't think #s beyond scholarship #s matter in men's sports as far as additional women's sports are concerned. This if off the cuff.

Not sure I’d cut any sports at WVU but I would add Track and Field.

hmm... Our AD was talking numbers and participation.  It's not just about scholarships...

from the ncaa website:

Athletics programs are considered educational programs and activities. There are three basic parts of Title IX as it applies to athletics:
  • Participation: Title IX requires that women and men be provided equitable opportunities to participate in sports. Title IX does not require institutions to offer identical sports but an equal opportunity to play;
  • Scholarships: Title IX requires that female and male student-athletes receive athletics scholarship dollars proportional to their participation; and
  • Other benefits: Title IX requires the equal treatment of female and male student-athletes in the provisions of: (a) equipment and supplies; (b) scheduling of games and practice times; (c) travel and daily allowance/per diem; (d) access to tutoring; (e) coaching, (f) locker rooms, practice and competitive facilities; (g) medical and training facilities and services; (h) housing and dining facilities and services; (i) publicity and promotions; (j) support services and (k) recruitment of student-athletes.

#2 lends one to believe it's scholarships only... yet #1 talks about equal opportunities to participate.   I wonder if #2 was added to ensure women were not excluded from scholarships and asked to pay when men were not...?

I just don't want to see ANY school add "eSports".  Kids playing video games is not a sport.

Yeah, PSU is missing the same four as OSU, plus Pistol, Rifle, Fencing, and Syncronised Swimming.
Michigan pretty much has the same lineup as PSU, only with Water Polo and Syncronised Swimming instead of Women's Ice Hockey and Men's Volleyball.
Nebraska is doing a lot of the heavy lifting with obscure sports, as they have Bowling, Rifle, and "Beach" Volleyball (as they call it on their own website). **insert multiple crotch chops**

So if the Huskers ever add Lacrosse and Ice Hockey for both genders, then they will be barking with the big dawgs as well.
PSU has fencing, and are usually the national champions.
