Title: OT-What sports would you like to see your school add/eliminate?
Post by: Brutus Buckeye on January 26, 2018, 11:34:40 AM
...if any.

Feel free to ignore Title IX if you like, since this is merely a message board.

Add:

Men's and women's Lacrosse

Nothing to delete, and I am considering Title IX, even though we don't have to.

If it was not a consideration, I guess I would like to see baseball in Madison again.

I too wouldn't mind seeing ASU add men's and women's lacrosse. I'm still pretty stoked we added D1 hockey.

Any word on a conference yet?

The NCHA would be a good spot I'd think.

For Purdue...

Add. Not sure what; don't particularly care. Just add something that most of the rest of the conference already has. I think we might sponsor the fewest scholarship sports in the entire conference.

I don't want us to have the most sports in the conference, but I'd like to at least be TIED for the fewest instead of in sole possession of that slot. And then maybe add 1 or 2 more just so we're not even tied for the fewest.

I know you said to ignore Title IX, so are we ignoring $$$ too?  If money is the concern I'd like to give ice hockey the boot.  It's a money pit, the program sucks, nobody cares, and the level of play in NCAA hockey is trash compared to even 20 years ago.  That money could be spent so much better.

I'm pretty happy with the Badgers' lineup, but if they were going to add, I would say lacrosse (mens and womens).

Title IX has little to do with it. Neither will be a revenue sport, both are equally good as opportunities for students, and both games are growing right now. I'll be just as proud of the women's team as the men's when they do well, much like the rest of the non-revenue sports.

I am on board with no baseball; in Wisconsin it makes little sense. School is out by the time the weather is conducive to playing. You could say the same about softball, but the field is smaller, so they can at least get better practices indoors. I'm sure there's some hypocrisy there, and the truth is I like college softball better than college baseball. It is near the pinnacle of the game, whereas college baseball is generally a feeder for the minor leagues.

Add: Men's Volleyball  (though I recognize that would be a long haul to develop)

Eliminate:  Can we eliminate specific events?  Get rid of the Pole Vault, especially Indoors.  I have my reasons.

Yeah, baseball is not high on my list, other than the fact that UW is the only conference school that doesn't have it.

I would support whacking golf if it meant adding Lacrosse.

I'd add Men's soccer and swimming..  I think both have been really hurt by Title IX.    I think UNL needs to add women's field hockey too.

I'd also like to see rugby..

Some folks enjoy tinkering with the numbers, so if you'd like to take the money and Title IX and all that into account have at it.
If you like a sport and your school doesn't sponsor it, that's good enough to give it a mention in this thread.
As for OSU, they already sponsor all NCAA varsity sports except Skiing, Bowling, Beach VB, and Water Polo.
Obviously downhill skiing isn't a realistic option in this part of the country, but the order I'd like to see them add the others would be:
1. Beach VB
2. Water Polo
3. Bowling

I would prefer the NCHA too. They initially declined adding ASU but that was because ASU at the time didn't have a permanent ice hockey arena or anything even announced but now that ASU finally has an arena officially announced they might consider adding us.

Wrestling is one of the few sports that becomes less fun to watch the higher the skill level. Watching HS wrestling is a blast. Wrestling moves actually work, its a lot higher scoring and there are honest to god pins. Anything above that level the wrestlers are just too good. Its boring IMO plus I've never been a fan of freestyle or greco-roman.
I'd like to see WVU get a mens cross-country team (they have a womens). WVU has a men's golf team. Y?

Beach vb is key for N, for recruiting.  Same players play indoors in fall.  Equalizer for west coast recruits.  Plus N vball is profitable so it makes sense to run a beach team.  Technically it is Sand vball.

For once not speaking for my schools, I would like to see Wisconsin add women's gymnastics. Wisconsin has interscholastic gymnastics in high school, and gymnastics in some of their smaller colleges, but not the UW-Madison. Compare that to Iowa which dropped interscholastic gymnastics in about 1979 or so, but has scholarship gymnastics programs in Iowa City and Ames. It's just weird that Wisconsin has it in high school but not college.
These girls, and women, work incredibly hard at this sport, and I would like to see it become more of a spectator sport in the Midwest.
I would also like to see Wisconsin get baseball.
As for Iowa, men's soccer, so we have a fall back in 75-years when football head injuries kill off the sport.

I have now scrolled through the other posts, and see mention of Lacrosse. I think Iowa should have men's and women's Lacrosse. It is another fall sport that could one day replace football, if that becomes necessary, and it is truly an American sport.

A lot of support for Hockey and Lacrosse.

MSU and Purdue both have some history with Lacrosse.

The Spartans had a varsity team from 1964-96, and the Boilers had one from 1974-81.

The order I'd like to see them add would be:
1. Beach VB
2. Water Polo
3. Bowling
+1
Beach VB - I would also call it sand Volley Ball. West campus has a couple courts already set up, and I think Grandview (Just SW of Campus) has indoor sand volley complex. This can be an easy add.
Water Polo - when they built the aquatics complex, I noticed they didn't have a pool for polo, and was bummed by that, I think retro fitting something in would be really expensive.
Bowling - When they took out the bowling lanes in the old Union, you knew this "sport" wouldn't make it. And it's not really a sport... But if people want to play it and the money is right I'm not opposed to seeing it offered.

I think the question should more be, what sports would you want to add, and 1-to-1 (ignoring costs and Title IX) which would you want to cut to make room for it.

I don't think anybody actively wants sports to be cut

I don't think I'd have to eliminate a sport for SAND VB because most schools use their regular VB players. But it is tough to zero in on one to eliminate because the Buckeyes are pretty good at the sports that I don't particularly care for.

I don't really like Wrestling, Women's Hoops, Men's Tennis, Men's Gymnastics or Men's Volleyball. But OSU is like top 5/10 in all of those sports.

Then there's Fencing, Pistol, Rifle, etc that I never watch, but they seem like pretty cool sports to have. So I'll keep the weapon sports.

I guess it would be Swimming or Cross Country that I would axe. I don't ever watch either, and OSU isn't exactly killing it in those events.

Well, as I said, Purdue currently sponsors the fewest scholarship sports in the conference. So we don't have room to cut anything. We need to add several just to get anywhere near parity with the rest of the league.

Not surprising it appears the PSU, OSU and M all sponsor the most sports.  I guess putting 100k+ paying customers in a big stadium 7 times a year allows you to do that.

Yeah, PSU is missing the same four as OSU, plus Pistol, Rifle, Fencing, and Syncronised Swimming.
Michigan pretty much has the same lineup as PSU, only with Water Polo and Syncronised Swimming instead of Women's Ice Hockey and Men's Volleyball.
Nebraska is doing a lot of the heavy lifting with obscure sports, as they have Bowling, Rifle, and "Beach" Volleyball (as they call it on their own website (http://www.huskers.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=100&SPID=123508&SPSID=732110&DB_OEM_ID=100)). **insert multiple crotch chops**

So if the Huskers ever add Lacrosse and Ice Hockey for both genders, then they will be barking with the big dawgs as well.

As for my other school FSU, I would like to see them offer men's and women's gymnastics. Women's gymnastics is a spectator sport at Florida, and Georgia, and possibly at Alabama, and LSU, so their are regional schools to compete against, and it should be in the culture.

I should add that FSU has its Flying Circus, which is acrobatics under a circus tent, and many acrobats get their start in gymnastics. There could be some overlapping participants.

What no one is talking about with hockey is that it has all the same problems that football is facing (concussions, hits to the head, checking from behind, etc). On top of that, it's terrifically expensive. A friend has a couple of sons in mites, and the cost of ice time alone is more than his mortgage. When the Edina youth hockey organization is worried about cost of entry, you know there's a cost issue.

Even in Minnesota, the supposed state of hockey, it's a niche sport. For the 15-16 school year in Minnesota, boys ice hockey is a badly beaten 8th in number of kids participating (FB, T&F, basketball, baseball, soccer, wrestling, XC, hockey in that order).

Lacrosse is indeed growing like a weed around here. Or at least it is based on the number of emails I get from the MSHSL begging for officials.

I didn't realize costs are so high that hockey isn't all that popular of a youth sport in the hockey states.  That sucks.

Off the cuff, it'd be great to see Purdue and (I think all but PSU and OSU) add Men's volleyball.  I don't think we have women 's LAX, I'd like to see both added.

Purdue has great club crew, would be cool to see it added as a sport.

Yeah, I've heard that hockey is just about the most expensive sport out there. TONS of equipment necessary, usually expensive, pretty much all of which needs to be replaced every year as a kid grows.
Football in comparison is IMHO cheaper. I remember when I played as a kid, helmets and shoulder pads were owned by the league and re-used. Pants, cleats, jock, etc were all relatively cheap compared to all the pads needed for hockey. And football is the other "expensive" sport as it is, but still a lot cheaper.
Then you add in the fact that you need ice time. Football, soccer, etc can be played on fields. Basketball/volleyball can be played in a gym (or outdoors) and don't need constant cooling to keep the playing surface from liquefying.
It's kinda sad because I think hockey is a much more fast-paced, exciting sport than soccer [even though I don't follow hockey], probably safer than football in the long run, yet it prices out most kids.

Ehh, I have a 7 year old 2nd year Mite and his cost was $565 for the season.  Hour long practices twice a week from October until March plus about 14-16 weekend games.  Tournaments are not included in that fee.  The league has equipment you can rent for $50 a year (except for skates).  Most Mites have their own equipment (Play It Again Sports is your friend here).  Granted it his costs will probably be over a $1000 when he is a squirt and up but it's not so bad right now.  It is definitely an expensive sport compared rec sports but compared to Little League, club soccer and club lacrosse, it is all about the same.  Especially since the hockey season is about 6 months.  A lot of high level youth sports are stupid expensive.  A competitive traveling soccer team here in Madison is well over a $1000 for the season once they get around U10 or so.  Heck, my 4 year old daughter's gymnastics costs an arm and a leg.

City rec programs are cheaper but a lot of times you get what you pay for, in my experience so far.

I found this recent article explaining the reasons Wisconsin is the only Big Ten university without a baseball program, and why it also cut men's and women's gymnastics in 1991. Bringing back dormant baseball program unlikely (http://host.madison.com/sports/college/hockey/badgers-sports-bringing-back-dormant-baseball-program-unlikely/article_23cd6962-1770-5e32-a622-0c3ff5008789.html)

This article also explains that Wisconsin doesn't plan to bring these sports back, even though there are some would like to see them.

I continue to believe if women's gymnastics were properly promoted it could become a break-even sport financially. It isn't promoted at the collegiate level at most schools. If Iowa, for example, hired Shawn Johnson to coach women's gymnastics, I would guess they would fill the arena at least half-full for most meets. They would have to be willing to invest, and promote.

Although I love the sound of  Icedogs  ( in Georgia it would sound like Ahcedawgs)  men's soccer is the sport I would like to add.

And yes there  are several SEC schools where women's gymnastics sell out regularly.  UGA, UF, LSU and Bama for sure and Auburn and UK get good crowds as well. I'm not sure about Arky.

I think UNL is missing the long term play of not having men's soccer.  UNL's women's sports will be expanded to offset Frost's desire to increase football rolls to 140-150 players per season... and that will trump any other expansion.   But soccer is growing and football is shrinking.   I don't expect Football ever to be anything but #1 in $$$ or viewership, but others are going to make up ground.   I think 20 years from now, people will ask why UNL doesn't have a soccer team and suggesting it needs one asap.   jmo

from the ncaa website:

Athletics programs are considered educational programs and activities. There are three basic parts of Title IX as it applies to athletics:

#2 lends one to believe it's scholarships only... yet #1 talks about equal opportunities to participate.   I wonder if #2 was added to ensure women were not excluded from scholarships and asked to pay when men were not...?

I just don't want to see ANY school add "eSports".  Kids playing video games is not a sport.

PSU has fencing, and are usually the national champions.

I do think the NCAA needs to expand what is considered a sport...   but I do agree with eSports not being a sport.

We should eliminate basketball.
I expected this to be from a PSU fan.

Yes, it's just as bad as having poker on ESPN.

Well, technically there is an E there too.  They just hadn't tapped into it in about 35 years.

Someone up-thread mentioned Rugby.

FWIW, the NCAA doesn't sponsor varsity Rugby, but it does exist at the club level.

The Big Ten does have a Conference. Indiana defeated Ohio State in the Championship game.

The teams that participate (at the top level) are:
Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue and Wisconsin.

Most importantly, Ohio State defeated Michigan 72-17.
