I'm not trying to tell you doctors are poor.  Or even have average salaries.  What I said was a great many of them can't make the same money they used to, and the payoff isn't there relative to what's demanded of them.  You need to focus on the "what's demanded of them" as much as the "payoff" part.

I was "chatting" on Facebook with some Marines from 3/25, my son's unit.  March 25 is "3/25", so they posted some photos of the track that was destroyed.  Then they apologized.  I said it was "OK".  I do like hearing from those guys, they are doing well, including the "sole survivor" who lives in Montana.  He's the one who was called away at the last second as he was boarding the track.  I guess it makes me wistful, not exactly happy of course.

I don't visit much with my fraternity brothers about their finances, but the surgeon has the 1.5 M yacht anchored off his backyard in Gulf Breeze, and another that opened up in East Central Kansas is donating hundreds of thousands--but, he didn't have any children to siphon off the potential savings, and his wife is a veterinarian.

The real money goes to the specialists... Such as a surgeon or a dermatologist brought up here.

Not that there's no money in general practice, of course, but I think that's where it gets a lot closer to what @MikeDeTiger is talking about. By the time you've gotten through school, medical school, and residency, you're hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. You're making "great money", it takes a long time to climb out of that hole--especially since you're almost pushing 30 before you get to flip that switch.

If you are a specialist, you'll climb out a lot more quickly.

there's also a percentage of doctors that come from doctor families and followed in the foot steps - didn't have to take out the loans and get into dept - old money

similar to farmers or any other profession

Dermatologists probably take in more money under the table than any other specialty.  Their botox stuff and some other things are big fat cash grabs.  Insurance doesn't pay for it, patients pay cash, they can charge ungodly prices for them, and I know for a fact most of them around here aren't reporting that stuff.  It's an ATM, a money printing machine.

Dermatologists also average the shortest time in visits, I'd wager, compared to most other specialties.  If you see 40 patients a day, you're probably on the low end for a dermatologist.  That starts getting unethical, but it is what it is.

My college roommate is a derm-bro, and he does make good money.  And I've just told you how he makes it.  I either know or know about most of the derms in my area as well, it's the same story.

But more than the money, I'm talking about the hoops drs have to jump through now, how that affects the patient care they can provide, and the hours and work/life balance it affords (or doesn't afford).  It's a different ballgame than it used to be.  I've heard more than a few of the older ones say it's not as attractive of a field as it once was, and they discouraged their kids from trying to go that route.

I hear that from many professions

you know - grumpy old-timers remembering the good ol daze - there's obviously some truth to it

On the other hand, there's an Endocrinology office here with three doctors, a dad and two of his three daughters.  The other daughter is also an Endo here with her own practice.  So obviously he didn't discourage his kids from following in his footsteps.  Though it makes me wonder what the lone wolf did to piss off her family--or the other way around--that she didn't join their practice.

They're all Indian, though.  None of them are from here.

When I think about the times I heard doctors say, or heard that they said, that the give and take is all out of whack now and they discourage their kids etc. etc......it's always American-born doctors.  Never heard any of our foreign doctors say that.

Which is most of them, in our area, now.

I wonder what they are advising their kids to do?

My secretary just gave her 2 week notice last Friday, going to go take a cushy job at the local university.  (No offense intended)

I can't compete with those kind of schedules and benefits--when her husband is a professor there, at least when he returns from his Nat'l Guard deployment to Kuwait--they'll get all their vacations synced up.  Can't say as I blame her.

Maybe they were just covering for the fact their kids were too dumb to be doctors.

There's a gal here that went to law school but could never pass the bar.  Daddy dealt with a lot of the oil and gas lease stuff here, and he just had her in the back room doing all the work but keeping the cash flowing in.

Daddy kicked the bucket, and she moved her desk into another old-money firm and is doing the same thing there.

It's good work if you can get it, even if you can't pass the test.  She passed the DNA test, though.
