BTW this isn't so much a "today" thing...
But my son started playing golf at 13. He got hooked on it, and tried out for his HS team as a freshman 3 years ago. At the time, he was probably somewhere around a 33-35 handicap. THANKFULLY, it was a weak year for his team, and he made JV. Which gave him the ability to play and practice a lot, and it's paid off.
By the end of his freshman season, he was probably low-mid 20s. By the end of his sophomore season, he was probably mid-high teens. And now, as his junior season is finishing, up, he's on the cusp of reaching a single digit index.
His last two rounds at our shorter course (par 59) he's shot 67 both times. And his most recent school/competition round at a longer/regulation course, he shot 83. His team won the conference for JV golf.
It's a little bittersweet to watch him go from MUCH worse than me to MUCH better than me over 3 years, as I'm just as terrible now as I was then... But I still get to be the proud dad.
