Geez…I just read that Trump is going to release government classified files related to Amelia Earhart.  I had no idea there were any classified files of such thing. Talk about weird history.
That is odd, but it was a few years (1937, I checked) before the Japanese attack on PH, and there were some notions she was spying.

I don't think there is credible evidence she was, it makes little sense.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:
Norman Conquest of England Begins (1066)
In 1066, King Edward the Confessor of England died childless. His cousin William of Normandy claimed that he had been promised the throne years earlier, yet Harold, duke of Wessex, was crowned instead. William then assembled a force of 5,000 knights and invaded. He was crowned less than three months later, following a swift and brutal conquest that had a profound and lasting effect on English life. When William landed at Pevensey on September 28, Harold's forces were busy elsewhere

That event was major in history, our language is very different from what it would have been as a result, for one thing.  It also led later to recurring wars between England and France.

That woulda been good.
Ya gosh, wonder why he got voted out of office immediately. One of his close friends Anthony Eden or Jock Colville someone like that stated that - for every great speech that's remembered there were 10 that aren't,and rightfully so.

The American public was tired of war at that point, bond sales were dropping and that was a major concern.  I doubt many in the US would have supported an immediate war with Russia.

The Russians also had more men, more and better tanks, a very capable air force, more artillery, more of about everything.  Such a war would have been very bloody with a doubtful positive outcome, probably just an armistice with lines about where they ended up after a lot of deaths.

Dumb idea.

We didn't yet have the atomic bomb, or know for sure it would work, and it's not very useful tactically even after it was developed.  Very dumb idea, Patton just wanted more personal glory.

Fortunately, saner heads prevailed.
