I was ten years old when this occured.  It was a pretty big deal, as I recall.  Lots of belt buckles, logo's on TV's.  Prizes.  Bumper stickers.

Ah, Ohio State was an A&M.  I never knew that.  At one time, there were a lot of A&M Colleges in the US. Oklahoma A&M, Kansas A&M, etc.  Most are now known as "XX State".  The only ones left are Texas A&M, and HBCU.  I don't think there are any non-HBCU except Texas A&M.

A couple of them are still known as Aggies despite changing from "A&M" to "State."  New Mexico, Utah.

There are a lot of Aggies, Wildcats, Bulldogs, Tigers and Eagles.

SEC has like five or six of each.

September 18, 1872 - The junction of two railroads: Burlington & Missouri River Railroad and Union Pacific was completed in Kearney on Sept. 18, 1872.

Soon after, the city of Kearney was incorporated and became the Buffalo County Seat. Kearney then developed rapidly as an industrial, agriculture and cultural center.
