I was ten years old when this occured.  It was a pretty big deal, as I recall.  Lots of belt buckles, logo's on TV's.  Prizes.  Bumper stickers.

Ah, Ohio State was an A&M.  I never knew that.  At one time, there were a lot of A&M Colleges in the US. Oklahoma A&M, Kansas A&M, etc.  Most are now known as "XX State".  The only ones left are Texas A&M, and HBCU.  I don't think there are any non-HBCU except Texas A&M.

A couple of them are still known as Aggies despite changing from "A&M" to "State."  New Mexico, Utah.

There are a lot of Aggies, Wildcats, Bulldogs, Tigers and Eagles.

SEC has like five or six of each.

Kinda glad that Purdue was never something silly like Indiana A&M.
