THIS DAY IN HISTORY:
The Kent State Shootings (1970)
-------------------------------------------
My aunt & uncle, cousins snack stand on E.Main St right across from the main campus was practically demolished. They also leased a small farm just outside of town and they worked that double until the stand was rebuilt. They had 6 children(my cousins) 2 of them were already out of the house both attending nursing school. My aunt & uncle just happened to be staying with us that week end - an hour away when things started getting unruly. Mostly by anti war activists that were traveling around to campuses fanning flames. They went back to Kent Sunday morning, by Monday afternoon the lid had blown off that stretch of normally peaceful, picturesque, quaint countryside.

Their old house is less than a mile from where the May 4th Memorial now stands. The farm is now under dormitories, classrooms and parking lots - progress. The stand is still there but expanded and is an eatery of some sort. My sister had just graduated KSU in '69 and a brother was enrolled there for the fall qtr. A few years later he started telling me about some maniac linebacker playing for the Golden Flashes named Jack Lambert. Chrissie Hynde was attending school there at that time of the riots also - saw the Pretenders a couple of times last time at the Cleveland Agora in '94 right when original drummer Martin Chambers rejoined Chrissie.

 RIP to the 4 Students

Dana Coin, a kicker/LB for UM from 69-71, made 13 of 27 career FGs.  One more successful attempt, he would have been a coin flip.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:
Cinco de Mayo (1862)
Cinco de Mayo, the "Fifth of May," is a Mexican holiday that commemorates the Mexican army's unexpected victory over invading French troops at the Battle of Puebla. It is widely observed in Mexico and the US, particularly as a celebration of Mexican culture. However, it is distinct from Mexico's Independence Day, which is held annually on September 16 and commemorates Mexico's independence from Spanish rule in 1810.

The Mexican restaurants near us use the day to have some special events, and specials, which works for me.  It's obviously just a commercial holiday all around.  Every day is a holiday for me.

There is a new one we've gotten to like pretty well that is having a street party we may check out.

Lots of parties on May 5 down here in Texico.  Mostly gringos celebrating, the Mexicans are largely indifferent.
