I'm the opposite, this is a final four type matchup for me.

It also has me thinking about how huge Michael Jackson was.  This came up when a youngin was trying to convince me Lady Gaga was so much more influential than Madonna.

If I need to break a tie, I'll go with the guitars.

Michael was very talented and put out a ton of very popular music,  but  it was POP

I do like Eddie's solo on "beat it"

I personally prefer the GNR album but voted Thriller.   It may be pop, but it is genius.

What makes an album genius?  I was a kid when Thriller came out (and liked it) so I’m well aware of the awards and notoriety and the impact it had.  I’m not a music guy though.  I know when I hear a song if I like it or not and that’s about as deep as I think about it.

How was something like Thriller so much better than other pop albums out at that time?

I think he, and Quincy Jones, the producer, managed to combine elements of funk, soul, r&r, in a way that was far ahead of the time.  His vocal range on this album was also quite broad relative to what MJ had previously done.  His videos, and I know this is an album tourney were groundbreaking.

No weak tracks.

Yeah, it's hard to recognize how different an album or a movie or a show was years later, when so many people have copied it.  I think I read something once about the Beatles that they may be the only band to be the first, best, and most popular at what they were doing simultaneously, which is why maybe they get more credit.  I think MJ is similar, that in terms of pop, not only was he the most popular, best he was the best, and the first, to fully incorporate a lot of that, depending on how you consider late 70s mainstream funk and disco.
