OT: Magazines of your state
« on: May 16, 2023, 12:14:19 AM »
Iowa has multiple magazines in print form. I subscribe to one of them, "Our Iowa." It features beautiful color photographs, quirky articles about Iowa. They recruit an Amish person to give a local Amish report (with photos - no faces).
A few years ago they gave away a car each year. They gave obscure hints. They hid the key to the car somewhere in a public area in Iowa; each month it wasn't found they would eliminate a few counties; if you found the key, you had a new car!
My parents in Arizona would try to find the "eyes" in the magazine each issue. If you found them you  could get something, probably from an advertiser, for doing so. I subscribe, and keep it in my law office reception area, but I am still working. I do not have time to look for "eyes" in a magazine. It keeps  retired people alert.
This magazine came out in the past 10-15 years. When it came out, they placed it in barbershops around the state, and that is how I found it.
Do you have state-wide slick color magazines devoted to topics in your state? Do you subscribe?

I don't subscribe to any magazines any more, haven't for 10+ years, it's all on line for me.  There is an "Atlanta" and an "Atlantan" magazine, we got the latter for a while because of the previous owners.  I imagine there is one for the state, somewhere.  I can recall being somewhat excited when a mag came in the mail, I probably got ten a month for a while, car mags, history mags, news mags ... the "Cincinnati" mag had the 25 Best Restaurants list annually which I watched when I was in the biz.

I'm too cheap to pay a subscription

I've browsed a few of the "Iowa" mags in doctor's/dentist's offices

they seem well done

I read everything on-line and too cheap to pay subscriptions here.  Even for Husker content
"Courage; Generosity; Fairness; Honor; In these are the true awards of manly sport."

There are probably 40-50 magazines I've noticed around here. We don't get any of them. Just the local paper.

always astonished at how (even now) many publications are still supported on a local level like this.

on one hand,  if businesses underwrite it with buying ads, it can sustain itself, just doesn't seem sustainable at the levels I observe.

granted, a lot of these are distributed at hotels and other places with a captive customer.       The local city/state mags are always good with the 'clickbait' list type issues, (Best Doctors, Best Dentists, Top Restaurants) which turnout to be serve a society page type circulation.   That's nice cashflow.  I still am friendly with a few people in this space, and some of these remain fairly profitable.

The editor of Our Iowa told me they have 90,000 subscribers, 76% in-state / 24% out-of-state with an estimated readership of 250,000.
I created this thread because there are several magazines devoted to Iowa and was curious whether that's a cultural thing endemic to Iowa. This is the home state of what was Meredith Publishing n/k/a DOTDASHMEREDITH, which publishes a large lineup of magazines such as Better Homes and Gardens, People, Midwest Living, Southern Living, and others. So I thought magazine publishing and subscribing could be part cultural to this region.
Meredith doesn't publish Our Iowa.

We have a few, by far the most popular one is called "Texas Monthly" which is famous for posting its "Top 50 BBQ Restaurants in the State" every few years.

They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.

Yup.

And I also always liked Texas Parks & Wildlife.  My brother in law was a photographer for them and I subscribed for at least 10-12 years.  Lots of great camping destinations, off the beaten path, in there.

Your magazine covers look somewhat similar, i.e. great views you personally may never see in your state. I want to know where you find this, in Iowa:

I read the description of the photograph on p. 5, and it is about 60-miles from me, at Moine Creek in Fayette County. - I never heard of it.

If I camped a lot, I think magazines that featured "hidden" camping areas would be great.

I used to take the kids camping mostly in KY state resort parks, they were pretty nice.
